I agree. Her serving was not good at all, but she was still able to hold when it mattered in the third set. However, stronger serving could have put more pressure on Safina to hold.

Well done to Dinara. She has always been a streaky player - it just seems it's been a while since she has had a streak. She could go on to win the title, why not? With major clay players like Justine and Sveta in the doldrums, this is a great chance for someone like Dinara to pounce.

Serena - back to business as usual on clay after Charleston win.

Fully agree with every word. 3rd set was just incredible. Serena really has raised the her game to a level I didn't think she ever would again over the last few weeks. She has been utterly stunning. I certainly have enjoyed watching Serena play over the last few weeks way more than I have ever previously. And at that level I honestly couldn't see Serena losing. But here Serena was, playing her very best tennis, and some how Safina finds a way to stay with her and actually win. Amazing. Credit to both of them for providing such a high quality match. I doubt we will see a better set than set three of this contest this year.

Dinara just beat 2 players who won 5 of the last 6 FO's. And movement is Dinara's biggest weakness.
So in the WTA, movement is not the issue on clay, like for the ATP.

Serena. :o I knew, eventually, someone would take advantage of the mental lapses you've been having lately. It was only a matter of time. The rest of your game is coming together, but you really, really need to work on that aspect of your game. Why you move in and out of focus like that is beyond me.

GL in Rome.
Congrats Safina! :)

I also wish Serena would stop going in and out of focus during a match. It's really the only thing that's extending her matches. I really hope she works on that because it's nerve racking to watch.

Im not sure which match you were watching, but this clearly wasn't Serena's best tennis. No i am not making excuses because Safina played better and deserved to win. However, Serena seemed to tense up in the third a little, and if Serena was "playing her best tennis" as you say, her serve would not have been as inconsistent as it was today. No matter how much you credit you give Safina, you can not argue that if Serena had served like she does when she "plays her best", she would have put alot more pressure on Safina to hold, thus causing a different outcome.

VenusSerenaBlvd.
May 9th, 2008, 02:26 PM
This is my theory, just my opinion. But while I do think Serena will do well this clay season (possibly winning the FO), I really think she is ready to win Wimbledon again. If she plays consistent (like she has been doing) she is gonna win her 3rd Wimby title.

I doubt we will see a better set than set three of this contest this year.

lol come on now!

:rolls: @ Serena's string breaking on match point!

Great win for Safina. She was more strong when it came to end and was more willing to go for her shots! She deserved this win.

I don't know what happened to Serena in the second set. Complete walk about there. But at least she still has Rome to get things together before mounting a challenge for the French Open.

Safina in the zone. Congrats to her. Great week for her, I hope she continues this form.

Serena, another QF tiebreak loss in Berlin , but you're still playing good tennis and hopefully will still play Rome.

Come on, Serena. Roland Garros is yours for the taking.

This is great for Safina and i am definitely happy for her and i am SURE Serena is aswell!

I didn't watch the match but did see the handshake and it seemed sincere and i am sure it was a nice match.

A shame to see the streak end but i hope she can take the positive steps in slams because she has produced some very impressive tennis over the last few weeks. Rome will be a very good indication of where she is at, because i just wish the AMAZING play from the first 2 rounds was congratulated with a win here :sobbing:

You come up with comments like this and expect to not be taken for a troll?

Welcome to my ignore list.

Just because it is the truth - she has lost in a quarter final on clay.

her last 10 clay events
2008 Charleston won
2007 RG lost qf
2007 Charleston lost 2r
2007 Rome lost qf
2005 Rome lost 2r
2005 Amelia Island lost qf
2004 RG lost qf
2004 Rome lost sf
2004 Charleston lost 3r
2004 Amelia Island lost qf

In her previous ten clay events, she has lost in the quarters 5 times and only made the semis twice. So today conformed to her average.

Well done Dinara :) She was solid as a rock on her groundies at the end of that 3rd set, really getting some awesome depth on her shots.

Serena :o Passive as fcuk for too much of the match and it was too late when she decided to try and turn on the heat. Also, her nerves are gone too. Final set leading 6-5 15-0 on Dinara's serve, Serena made like 2/3 return errors after that....not to mention Dinara double-faulting in the tiebreak to hand Serena a 4-3 lead and with all her experience still couldn't take advantage. Kinda worrying for her really. Her game seems to be stronger and certainly has more variety now than when she was dominating back in 02 but her mental strength has diminished to a shadow of its former self.

I really think she tanked, she got good QF points. Now she can focus on winning Rome and then get a week off.

She was hitting into the net so many times. She had a very low amount of winners, it just seemed that she wasn't into the match like yesterday.

It comes with aging. Alot of the players who were quite brash and fearless when they were younger (and ultimately more successful) starts to become more cautious, more anxious, overthinkers etc.

Great match from Dinara:yeah::hatoff:, for someone who has let her nerves and emotions get to her at times she was just rock solid in the final two sets. This sure has been a great week for her hope she can keep it up against Azarenka. Serena wasn't looking great out there today especially the second set, she looked flat and pretty sluggish, she played a bit better in the third set but not looking nearly as impressive as earlier in the week.

Serena....err wtf happened? I'm sure she must have lost focus in the 2nd to lose it so easily and in the tiebreak she couldn't buy a first serve. but meh...disappointing to lose her win streak to Safina of all people but still better this sort of match happen here in Berlin and not in FO. And I do remember Safina coming back from 5-1 down in RG to beat Sharapova so i guess it' not that surprising.

I just hope Serena can keep her focus and her form up and not go away like she did last year.

Thought she would falter mentally in the end. She proved me wrong. I'm not worried about Serena though. She's very fit physically and mentally. She's 100% focused on tennis, you can tell.

Serena is 21-2 this year and has 3 titles, 2 Tier Is, and she lost 7-6 in the 3rd, she hasn't had a season like this since 2003, so I don't know what you're smoking.

Worry about your own fave. Anyway, big respect and props to Safina, she's shown her quality this week :worship:

Serena's still doing great and is looking good for RG.

Dinara isn't even close to making the Olympic team for Russia in singles.
There's a lot of depth, with Maria and Vera skipping Berlin for Rome.

:p
