Lots of unforced errors by Ivanovic, quite a few also caused by the fact that Bammer was playing great defence so that Ana was trying to go for too much at times. Great fight by Bammer but not enough to win, :yeah: Ana not great play she still got th win in the end.

The remarkable thing is that it was Ana that was doing most of the moonballing, very effectively most of the time it must be said, and Sybille who was doing most of the attacking. Strange match.

Oh God. I didn't see the last set and a half, but Ana was playing at a terrible level. She hit more overcooked forehands in one match than I've seen from her in years. Her service returns were also atrocious. However, it's good that she got through it, and I suspect that she'll raise her level for the next match.

Congrats to Bammer too, great match for her too....

From watching just the third set I would say Ana was lucky to get out of that (saved by a few close calls - Bammer won more points in the match). Ana was the one doing the moonballs and only her experience got her through.

Last season in Berlin before QF Ana played 3 matches and lose only 11 games (vs Granville, Likhovceva and A.Bondarenko) and this season she lose 23 games before QF (vs Bye, Akgul and Bammer). But last season before Germany she played both US green clay tournaments and instead FED CUP she prepare for red clay season in Barcelona, and this season Ana not played at green clay, prepare herself for hardcourt FED CUP matches in Zagreb where she get that illness with fever.

With play like today Ana will also lose against Safina or A.Bondarenko claycourt level players (Szavay also), but tommorow is new day and she is still player with impressive 14-1 red clay record since 2007.

Only good thing is that once again Ana prove, even at such bad day like today, that she is already one of best "closers" in history of womans tennis according to:
- monster percentage of winning matches where won 1st set
- monster winning percentage of 3-setters
- monster percentages of winning some set after 5-5 tied result.
- never lose match where reach MP

This realy make easy to be her fan even at nervuos matches like this. You always know that her chances in tight finishes (of set or match, whatever) is actualy 75/25 not 50/50!

I have big expectations of Ana at this tournament before start, but now i will be happy if she atleast make solid preparation for RG. Justine is definitly in slump and RG/08 will be big opportunity for all other contenders (and Ana is big one).

Ana  Tough match, but it's good she got through. There is a big chance to defend this title if she steps up her game- Ajde!

Sybille  This would have been a great win but hopefully she will take confidence after proving she can trouble the best players. Sybille belongs in the top 20. Hopefully with a nice run in Rome she will be back there.

Ana :tape: Although it must be said Sybille is the kind of player that draws terrible performances from players :oThis is sooo true. :tape: Sybille does draw at times the worst out of top-players... Serena, Sveta, Ana... many others.

Both played horrible.
Bammer's backhand is one of the most useless shots I've seen in the game, yet Ivanovic opted to play to Sybille's forehand.

"The one who played dumb defeated the one who played dreadful" would be a proper resume of this match.

Aww I hate to hear that. Ana's in my avatar, but I think I'm going to switch it to Elena D because that is where my allegiance is at. But I still love Ana. I hope she does well at Roland Garros; that's where it really matters.

Another easy won for Ana. I was never worried.

Yesterday she played ok, but today nothing worked.
The practise session didn't look bad at all, but with this form you don't want to play Serena.

Congrats though.

yeah surprisingly it got better. It really hurt my eyes at the beginning. But I was quite impressed with Sybille especially in set 3 as she was going with Ana into the ralleys and won many points. Her forehand is really good and her backhand is maybe not as effective but still good. Most useless shot as somebody said in that match was not Sybilles but Ana´s backhand.

It didn't.
Ivanovic kept hitting backhand crosscourt all the time, Bammer kept running 256 metres behind the baseline. 90% such "rallies" ended up with error.
