Yeah her first serve% was 57 in the first set and 76 n the second, but anywhere between 60-65 is generally good for Serena. If she can serve in the 70's though we will be seeing a lot more 61 sets :lick:

Serena won in less than an hour  good stuff over a solid up and coming top 20 player.

Seemed like good stats except 0/1 bp saved. And her 1st serve % was low but she was wining a high percentage of points on both second and first serves so ..meh.

Good luck Serena against Dinara Safina!! Safina seems to playing out of her mind and on a confidence high for sure so Serena will need to be tough out there.

Probably the cleanest performance from Serena on red clay since defeating Mauresmo at RG-2003 :yeah:
And Radwanska wasn't even playing that bad:

Serena - 32 winners to 9 UEs
Aga - 12 winners to 6 UEs

Great win for Serena! I would have liked to have seen a match up against Henin but only for the purpose of seeing who of the two frontrunners was more likely to win RG. I suppose my question has been answered (for the moment), though not as decisively as I would have liked it to be.

Serena played well today..But Aga has nothing to hurt her with.

Anyone else notice Serena seems more comfortable on the Dirt rather then American Clay

I think the green clay is a little too slippery and she loses her footing. She always gets injured on the green clay. The last time she played Charleston, I believe it was, she sprained her ankle. I'm glad she was careful in Charleston this year. But, she's never really had any problems on the red dirt.

that's how i feel too. While she's much more consistent then her sister she's still highly unpredictable in the sense that you're not sure what you're going to get from match to match or tournament to tournament. And more importantly she needs to stay healthy and she needs a little luck for that cuz she's been very unlucky w/ injuries and outside personal tragedy during the last few years.

saw the highlights and  at Serena standing halfway to the service line on Radwanska's serve. that was hilarious....exactly what Radwanska did to Sharapova difference is Serena stayed there (actually she moved closer) and smacked away some ROS winers. Too bad she won't be able to do the same to Safina who has a good serve.

No, not me. I have an abundance of confidence in Serena. Especially when she's on a winning roll. The only thing I get afraid of is her getting injured, but I'm not even going to let that enter my mind. She was on a roll at Wimbledon, but she got injured. She is like a freight train when she's on a winning streak. There's no stopping her. She's got tunnel vision right now, and that's being at the top where she belongs. Her eye is on the prize right now and that's beating Justine & Co. any which way she can and getting to No. 1. I've witnessed this particular Serena before and she has arrived once again to give us joy and celebration. :)

Serena Scores 17th Straight Win To Set Up Quarterfinal With Safina
By Tennis Week

Serena Williams continues to create a comfort zone on clay.

The fifth-seeded Williams racked up her 17th consecutive victory powering past Agnieszka Radwanska, 6-3, 6-1, to storm into the Qatar Telecom German Open on the red clay of Berlin today.

Last month, Williams captured her first clay-court title in six years beating Vera Zvonareva in the final to win the Tier I Charleston championship.

With today's win, Williams raised her record on clay to 7-0 this season, which is one more win that she produced in the last two years combined on clay.

The victory vaults Williams into a quarterfinal match with Dinara Safina.

The 13th-seeded Russian rolled over Justine Henin, 5-7, 6-3, 6-1 to advance to the last eight. Safina, who had not won a set against Henin in suffering five straight losses, advanced to her third quarterfinal of the season on the strength of a victory she called the best win of her career.

"Going into the match I had inside the feeling that today I have a chance," said Safina, who was a quarterfinalist at Gold Coast in January and Miami in March. "Because for her it was the second match and I already played two matches so I was more into the tournament. I just had to take my chances and not make the same mistakes against her I made in previous matches."

The four-time French Open champion suffered her first clay-court loss since she succumbed to Svetlana Kuznetsova, 6-4, 5-7, 6-4, in the 2007 Berlin semifinals. Henin's loss came 24 hours after reigning Roland Garros men's champion Rafael Nadal fell to former World No. 1 Juan Carlos Ferrero in Rome.

"It's never easy to lose and to lose that way," said Henin, who will continue her quest for a record fourth consecutive Roland Garros title when the French Open begins in Paris on May 25. "During the whole match I didn't have the intensity and the consistency and it was quite tough. There's nothing more I can really say. She's been better. That's it."

The sixth-ranked Williams is 3-0 lifetime vs. the 17th-ranked Safina, including a 6-2, 6-3 decision in the Roland Garros round of 16 last year.

Alona Bondarenko, the No. 15 seed, fought back from a first-set blowout to send third-seeded Svetlana Kuznetsova packing, 1-6, 6-2, 6-2. Bondarenko is 2-0 lifetime vs. Kuznetsova, who was runner-up to Ana Ivanovic in Berlin last year.

Safina, who had failed to win a set in five prior meetings with Henin, teed off on the three-time Berlin champion's serve, converting eight of 16 break-point chances.

Seventh-seeded Elena Dementieva dismissed fellow Russian Vera Dushevina, 7-5, 6-3, to set up a quarterfinal clash with Jelena Jankovic. The fourth-seeded Serbian broke serve six times and won 12 of the 16 points played on Maria Kirilenko's second serve in a 6-2, 6-4 decision. Prague finalist Victoria Azarenka defeated Argentina's Gisela Dulko, 6-3, 6-1, and will play Bondarenko for a place in the final four.

KEEP IT GOING, SERENA!

I think Serena seems to be regaining the dominance of Rena 02 but this new and improved Rena 08 has more variety to her game. How awesome to see her play some delicious moonballs today (that were really effective too)

Good play by Serena:yeah:, Radwanska tried and played a few nice points but she was outclasses for most of the match.

that's how i feel too.

She had no problem tagging Safina's serve @ FO 07.

Serena is 21-1 in 2008.

She's getting better and better, the only thing that will prevent her from winning a Slam or two this year is injury.

:scared: Agnieszka was smothered today. That girl couldn't have done anything perhaps even more helpless because of her serve. However, Serena made that clay feel like grass to her. :tape:

From the highlights, this looked like a genuine clay court match. Beautiful stuff from both players.

Please meet Elena in the final. I don't even care if you beat her unless she wastes MP or something. Keep going. :yeah:

Serena played a beautiful game. She mixed it up with some brilliant moonballs. I loved it when she hit one to Radwanska's backhand and then came into the court to smack the reply back for a winner  It was so clean and so controlled. It was a stunning performance. Had only one wobble up 5-1 in the first set but after that she played flawless tennis. :yeah:

Good luck in the next round Serena

Hey All,

Some of us said Serena could play on clay. I know I did. I mean, she's won the FO before. She knows what it takes. Now granted, each matchup is different - and so she'll have to be ready and show up like she knows - but she can do it.

What a wonderful match she played today. Just 9 UE's? My goodness. She wasn't playing around. Kudos to her - for she is on a mission. I wouldn't put it past her to win it all. She is still one of - if not the best competitor on tour.

I look forward to watching her tomorrow on the tube - and hopefully Sat & Sun too. LOL!

100% agree with this post. Unlike Elena, who TRULY deserves worry on my end, when Serena wants something, Serena gets it. I've every confidence in her and I want her to win this tournament and Roland Garros. Honestly, I only worry about injury.

She's so beautiful on a tennis court. Powerful, accurate, gracious. Got rid of the grunting. Developped the sliced backhand. The best technique on the tour. I love the new Serena. So serene. And a wonderful human being who has gone through hardship and is making it thanks to her faith and her "never give up" attitude. Her time has finally come again. What goes around comes around indeed.

So happy that Serena is getting back to herself- playing close to her potential. What's surprising to me is that so many people here are so surprised!

When Serena is at or near her best she is nearly IMPOSSIBLE to beat. It's a fact that has ALWAYS been.

I simply hope she can maintain this level. If so, this will be a great year.

Serena is just on fire right now! She's honestly focused, and that's why she's doing so well. And it's great to see her making an effort to do well on the clay. She's setting herself up for a great run at the French Open. I can't wait!!! :bounce:
