This seems to be have been an ok match from Ana. She faced little pressure on her own serve (only faced BPs in one service game), but struggled to break throughout. Amanmuradova was supposedly hitting extremely hard, so I'm sure that Ana was struggling with a lack of time to set up her shots. After a tight first set, she played a perfect tie-break and then took over in the second set. Overall, this a solid start to the clay season, but she really needs to step it up if she expects to have a chance to defend her title.

Not Ana's best day at serve (%-wise) or converting break points. But a win is a win and it's her first match on clay.

Yeah. The first serve percentage definitely needs to come up, but she was winning a nice percentage of points on both the first and second serve (79-59).

First match on the clay so you can't expect a perfect performance, break point conversion wasn't great but overall she played okay. Keep going Ana :D

Phew. I was so nervous during the first set when Akgul was 2 points from taking the set. Luckily Ana took over in the tiebreak. Akgul was serving very very well - high first serve percentage and she has a great forehand too. I suppose the tiebreak and thereafter was a mental battle, which Ana dominated. Akgul's serve are on the corner all the time and it wasn't until the second set that Ana finally got some rhythm on the returns.

P.S.: Ana needs to calm down a bit. She was obviously nervous being defending champion and sometimes she was so frustrated that she was trying to end the points too quickly in the first set. Like smacking forehand returns crosscourt trying to get back the break point.

Anyway good win. Akgul played really well; if she learns from this match she can be very successful.

good match from both, anna had sth like 40 winners and 20 UEs
Akgul has a big game, she just needs to work on her fitness a bit more, she also tends to use the dropshop too often, but she defenitely has a shot at the top50 if she continues to play like this week in Berlin

At first sight, I thought Ana was playing a freaking dude in a single mixed exhibition match. I took me like 1min to get it was a chick who wished she was a dude.
This is sick.

Ana had like 20 more winners than UEs but the first set was not the best one to be honest. But that was her first match here so no big deal :)
As for Akgul, she totally didn't impress me, no backhand and no fitness

I'm glad Ana got to play this kind of match at the start of the tournament. She didn't cease under pressure and I'm very satisfied with her game. 40 winners (she made 20 UE also) but some very nice shots.
Akgul was impressive today but not enough to beat our defending champion :)

What a toruture from Jelena, Novak and Ana in 1st sets of theirs matches today against non-TOP50 opponents :tape:

Ana BP 3/11, Akgul 1/1 :tape:

I think that Akgul finaly at 24 make decission to be real tennis professional player. Her 1.90m with power will be more dangeruos at grass and USO hardcours, so i expect to see her in TOP50 at end of this season, after years and years out of TOP150.

I was always intrigued by Akgul and I'm glad I finally got to see her in action. She played exactly like I thought she would. Terrific serve with great placement and speed that got her out of trouble many times. The rest of her game however..If Stosur had her own groundstrokes repair central Akgul would be a top graduate. Nonexistent double backhand and useless slices and (un)lucky dropshots. Her forehand had some decent moments if she managed to put her massive body weight behind it. Most of the time it was just junk though. Movement and reflexes were pretty poor and her reach couldn't compensate. Not to mention the awful shot selection in general (silly dropshots and a hilarious kamikaze serve and volley attempt on second serve AND breakpoint down). Still, she did well with what she had though. If she continues to improve she'll stay in the top 60 for sure. Perhaps she'll go the Karlovic route.

But I've had my share of clay matches already. I'm patiently waiting for the grass season.

Good match from Ivanovic, Amanmuradova also played well to keep the first set tight after that Ivanovic started playing the important points better. Not yet great from Ivanovic but a good match to start the clay season with :yeah:

She literally pounded those forehands like it's the last shot she'll ever make. Those shots were like freaking bullets... Ana really struggled against them.

Then again, her backhand.... :tape::tape::tape: I wonder how many winners were there with the backhand... ZERO?

Akgul was always fighting a losing battle when you have such glaring weaknesses in your game  Still, the scoreline was far better than I expected and she could do some damage with that serve alone during the grass season.

Exactly how I saw it. :yeah:

If this girl had just a little better movement and could learn to use her bachand, she could be waaay better. But without that, the maximum she can do is to loose in close matches.

I meant that Akgul tried lots of dropshots against Ivanovic, but about 80% of them were not successful. Lots of them were too short and landed in the net.
