Yes, it sure was a good job. She played some clean tennis, wasn't pressured at all, in fact the match was a bit boring. I was following on the live score board plus watching on TVAnts (which is always behind the livescore board) and I keep excepting Fran to lift her game, never did.

Who will be the next victim?

I said that. And my exact words were that her FOOTWORK is the worst. She's a great mover, but on clay, you have to be in control of your feet and sometimes Serena just lets them do their own thing. She was moving her feet well today which is a good thing, because sometimes she can get sloppy. Regardless of her form, however, Justine NEVER looks sluggish on court. Her footwork is always crisp and efficient. That being said, I hope Serena demolishes her on Friday, but Justine is a real role-model when it comes to footwork and those "little steps" that everyone talks about.

I don't think you can say Serena's footwork is the worst on clay especially considering she won the French in 2002. This is a feat that Martina Hingis, one of the most hailed players of her era never could win. You need great footwork and patience to win the French Open which is something that Serena has done before.

In my opinion, unlike Justine(who grew up playing on the clay surface) Serena needs enough preparation for the clay court season in order to adjust to the conditions. In Charleston, at times her footwork was lacking but the good thing is when she needed to take those little steps she had no problem. Personally, I feel that at times Serena isn't that interested in the match until she feels it's time to start fighting, then you see footwork, concentration, accuracy of shots, and mental fortitude all come together. I really think Serena could make some of her matches more easier if she comes out ready at the beginning of a match, but I always expect slow starts from her these days.

While I believe Justine's footwork has attributed to her success at Roland Garros, in my opinion she hasn't been challenged there much. I'm not sure the tide will change in that regard because like all great champions with a favorite surface it's very hard to defeat them where they feel most comfortable. However, I think Serena attempting to make preparations for Roland Garros by playing Rome and Berlin is a sign that their encounter at the French(if it happens) will be different. Justine is still the favorite in all their clay court match-ups but Serena's going to fight hard.:)

Denise4925
May 7th, 2008, 07:36 PM
Wow, some of y'all act like Serena has never beaten Justine on clay or come close to it. She beat her in Rome in 2002 and she was ahead of her in their match at the FO until the hand incident in 2003. Now, I know you're going to say that Serena is not the Serena of 2002-03, but neither is Justine. Justine was talking about making plans to retire because her body is not the same. She older and it gets harder to heal from injuries. I can understand that. But, if Serena has enough preparation on clay, she's fit and in form, I think she can beat Justine on it. I wouldn't count her out.
