View Full Version : Marion Claytoli on mission!

Iceland
May 3rd, 2008, 05:58 PM
As usual, this is the general thread dedicated to the European clay court season which provided Marion many points last year!! It was really her saviour and I hope this miracle will happen twice.

Marion will play Berlin, Rome, Strasbourg & Roland-Garros. Huge schedule, but she is right to consider every possible opportunity to score points before Wimbledon & gets in form for Roland-Garros.

Marion's draw in Berlin :

R1 - BYE
R2 - Razzano or Safarova
R3 - Szavay :scared:
QF - Ivanovic :help:

Well the message is clear, Marion will face only hardhitters.
This should give us a pretty good view of her potentiality on clay this season, these are no claycourt specialists but they all scored interesting performance in the past on this surface. Marion had 3 weeks of break to work on her game & preparation on clay, if she worked as intensively as in 2007, results should come.

Allez Marion, beat them all!

Allez Marion, beat them all!Well,I'm almost afraid to give you too much praise because you may be one of those deluded,French Sartre-lovers and the compliment might go to your head...but I LOVE the title you've chosen for this thread.:yeah:

Safarova is 1-0 in her career vs. Razzano but has performed like an over-the-hill Yugo with 100,000 miles on it this year.It might not be good preparation for tougher competition if Marion is fortunate enough to face her.Marion is 1-1 against Razzano although the loss occurred back when they were young girls with acne and the win was just this season.I believe that we'll learn by the 2nd match--IF Marion is victorious,of course--whether or not she has started to make her climb again...this is our yearning obviously.Allez Marion:hearts::hearts::hearts:

Prefer a bit of Tolstoy and Dostoevsky myself, but whats that got to do with tennis? :p

What do I expect? Marion to get past the first round with ease. After that anything could happen in R32,R16. ;)

What would be good? Reaching a QF against Ivanovic.

As much as I'd like to see her win,I'm not so sure that a Razzano matchup would be 'easy' for Marion...as long as she wins it,I'll be pleased.:)

Thanks for your kindness towards my title, c'est très gentil! I'm myself much more interested in Tolstoy and Dostoevsky than Sartre & De Beauvoir, so don't worry for my reaction ^^.

I also think that reaching QF is up to her with this draw. We'll be decided about the name of her 1st match opponent today, I would prefer Razzano to win. Marion would be more in confidence on the court since she has beaten her this year.
Allez!!

Until Safarova has proven that she has regained her form(which will take her more than one match),I'll remain convinced that Marion is the better clay-court player--and that she should spank Lucie's juicy buns in this matchup. This is a deep field so Marion has to do MORE than just win;she must establish some rhythm to build her confidence...I wonder if Marion would enjoy Henry James.

Pretty good match from Marion :yeah:. 9 winners for 8 UE, Lucie made the rest (more than 20 U.E ). She was extremely relaxed & determined to win during all the play while Lucie was a bit over excited. There were very few rallies, so it's hard to judge Marion's entire game.

What I can say is that her serve was extremely effective with nice variations of zones & a high 1st serve percentage. Marion always needs a good first shot to feel comfortable in the points, so that's what she did, no useless risks, a deep ball all the time with a good defense when Lucie was playing better & some smart shots (including a fantastic moonball with a huge spin!).
Marion got a bit more shaky after 6/0 3/0 hitting shorter balls & missing many returns. She was again too much inside the court to retrieve Lucie's first serve, it was too audacious from her.
MP was a missed return on a very low 2nd serve of Marion. Good for us :D.

Overall a very serious match, Marion had her gameplan & seemed to be in control of her shots. Her level of confidence is there, she has worked on her game to play on clay, you can see it. Lots of positive things to take from this meeting. :) It's good that it was so short too, Marion tires herself quite quickly when she plays in the sun. So it couldn't have been better.

Tomorrow, sightseeing for Marion who will go to the zoo & inside the city (and in its cafés!). ;) She was very happy, but showed no signs of relief in her interview. She endorsed her role of top 15 perfectly, as if she always knew she would get through.

Bravo Marion!!! She will probably face Agi in her next match. A very good claycourter who hits very hard but her serve hasn't been working so well this year. She has her chances!

One more thing, she changed her outfit, now she is in black & dark blue a bit in country style but she really looked nice & fitter :).

Not surprised to see that Marion handled Safarova so easily and we'll see if she can duplicate that form against the rising Szavay IF they meet(young sprouts such as Agnes can be so unpredicatable).Marion's only meeting with Yan ended in injury retirement so I'd like to think that this won't hurt her confidence any in case this matchup re-curs...as for Iceland's observation that Marion is getting fitter::drool::drool::hearts::hearts::hearts:...as if I needed any further temptation.:D

We CAN'T be happy with two blown leads but,on the other hand,we'd be naive if we were shocked by these results given Szavay's impressive rise and great suitability for clay.NO true competitior can be thrilled with a loss, yet maybe Marion can take some heart from the surprising fact that clay-court queen Henin got her ass kicked today on her favorite surface...let's see how 'Claytoli':inlove:bounces back in her next tourney.

Marionettes, please forgive me for getting off track with other players, but I'm curious about the Berlin developments and can't turn anywhere else for reliable, intelligent feedback.

Basically,Serena's at it again;she's been pretty charming the last 6 months but now she's back to excuse-making,claiming that Safina didn't do anything at all to beat her--that she had beaten herself.
(1)There ARE times when Serena sems to drift into the Twilight Zone and loses matches due to sloppy, unforced errors...(2)then there are other occasions when her opponent plays a great defensive game. Her best shots are sent right back at her,and she gets frustrated and loses her composure by trying to OVER-hit...(3)then there are rare occasions when she is simply outplayed on the court as with last year's final 3 Grand Slams.

Unless you've actually seen the match,it's hard to know what transpired when Serena loses cuz the excuses are practically identical. Can anyone give me their best analysis on which of the above three scenarios occurred?

Sorry for wasting space,Marionettes...I actually found an impartial, detailed summary by a Serena fan that was more honest than her favorite player often is following a loss.

Marion is slated to meet Razz or Julia Vakulenko in Rome's 2nd Round, and the human being in me has sympathy for Julia. She has had a multitude of injuries and also had a nervous breakdown in,I think,2004.It might sound strange but I sorta hope that Virginie beats her so that I can cheer more heartily for Marion in our sweetie's first match.

Marion won 64 75 :yeah:!!! A much needed win for her! She will return to top 10 next week at her best career rank (9th) thanks to Justine's retirement. I'm really proud that Marion is one of the last girls to have defeated her and even in her best year. She should consider it and thinks even more positively. I would have liked another meeting but now it is too late ...

The only thing I dislike is her 8 DFs. The rest is correct even though her serve hasn't been sparkling.

Tomorrow Marion plays in first position on court n°1 against her super friend (not!) Patty Schnyder. A real test for Marion who is looking for some form before Roland-Garros. I have so enough of this attitude. I can understand her previous losses but not this one, she had so many opportunities ... God ... it's not like Schnyder was an in-form player. :o

She should do well in Strasbourg, she will be the topseed there, she'll have the crowd with her but this choke may affect her confidence. I don't really know. Anyway this is not the way we wanted her to celebrate her comeback to top 10.

I hope she can repeat her SF here and she's had a couple of days to rest.
I think she has quite a tough draw with reasonable (Peng) to tough (Srebotnik) players on her way to the SF. Good Luck Marion and start fighting from the first match, Peng is definitely beatable if you play your best!!AALLEEEZZZ!!

First set to Peng 1-6.

Was there more than meets the eye to the photo of Marion in Rome behind helped off the court last week...which has dictated playing the latest possible this week? This crossed my mind before but I dismissed the late playing time as Marion headlining the tournament and Wednesday being a school half day for kids in France...and you know to the benefit of the tournament.

Ok..Peng has done really well this set..but come on 1-6?! Maybe Marion will make it in three. Peng has won 10 of 13 points on her second serve! Where are those crushing returns Marion?!

Allez in three ...:fiery:

It's very hard to see this loss in a positive light except for the fact that Marion--and pro'bly even Peng--realizes who would win if injuries weren't a factor.Also--and you experienced Marionettes can comment better on this--it seems that our Marion has been neglectful of her health,at times,in the past.I hope that this default signifies a more careful approach that'll allow her to maximize results, and I pray that she doesn't push herself into RG--despite its huge status--if she's not ready.

Allow me to switch the light on then. Help you to see better Bruce Goose. Examine closely. See, it wasnt a defeat. And she didnt tank it as some in GM assumed.

No defeat. Her opponent recieved a walkover due to Marion's retirement with a verifiable injury.

It's quite clear now that the wrist problem was affecting her from the beginning of the match.

She says,

"Now I am worried because I never felt any pain in my wrist. We absolutely need to find the cause of the pain less than a week before Roland Garros. We suppose it is a tense nerve because I cannot bend my fingers anymore."

Will the last person out, switch off the lights.

:(OH,THAT SASSY MOUTH!!:inlove:...yes,Super M,I agree that an injury default isn't a TRUE victory/defeat beyond its notation in the WTA records.Hypothetically speaking, one exception to this thinking might occur if one player were trouncing another 6-1,5-1...and then the trailing player suddenly injured herself.

Again,my earnest wish is that Marion will take sufficient time to recuperate EVEN if this means skipping RG.......and I hope that you weren't traumatized by my opening "forward much" intro.

Marion has a tendinitis at her right wrist, I hope it won't bother her too much for Roland-Garros . They said on ES that she won't train till Sunday. :o This doesn't look good at all, last year, Marion played many more matches before coming to Porte d'Auteuil; she had her references & a big amount of confidence. Now she will enter the court with worries about her health. It's true that the grass season is her priority, she will do everything to be ready for it.

Marion's draw has be unveiled today and it's not really great .

R1: Dellacqua
R2: Ditty/Dechy
R3: Mauresmo :o
R4: Venus/Pennetta

What a lack of luck! She has alwaus been drawing a Williams sister lately, why couldn't she have Chakvetadze instead?!
At least she will be very motivated to defend her French number 1 against Amélie. It may be good as last year against Aravane.

Allez Marion, do what you can. Best of luck!

I saw the Marion's first set on French TV. Marion plays well when she wants. No 1st serve in her last service game. Normally, she must beat Casey, but with Marion everything is possible.

She is with her father, waiting for tournament's decision. Sky is grey and it is still raining.

Marion played indeed a bad game at 5/4 with only 2nd serves including one DF. She was terribly aggressive, playing deep flat strokes in each rally, never going down on intensity. It requires so much work on the accuracy to play the way she is. She struggles a bit with Casey's lefty serve & on her topspin play. I can see why she lost to Patty easily. Marion will be so good for the grass season, her balls are like lightenings :worship:.

I wish she would have closed this set already. But she should finish her quickly tomorrow, I really hope so. I will be in exam if she plays in the morning, too bad for me!
It's a tricky match because Marion doesn't play clay court tennis at all while Casey can. But when the real Marion is on, she is totally safe. The only think I dislike is the colour of her skirt & her grunt who changed a bit. Doesn't sound pleasant. :(

Allez, finish her tomorrow. :bounce:

The wrong Marion was on court today & lost 76 36 26, she suffered from the wind I think, her serve was off & she couldn't keep the ball in the court. Truely disappointing because yesterday she was really good. She was so average today .

Nope, Marion won't prepare her grass court season. She is extremely affected by this loss & won't touch a racket for these 2 weeks. There is an interview available here : http://www.lequipe.fr/Tennis/breves2008/20080528_164935_bartoli-dur-a-encaisser_Dev.html

Basically she was disturbed by the spin of Casey's FH. She also mentioned an acute tiredness (so visible!!!!), she just can't handle the rhtythm anylonger. This has been the same since AO.

A wise decision for Marion, hopefully it will work.

In my opinion,Marion WOULD HAVE won Prague last year had the lucky Morigami not benefitted from an injury default in the 2nd set of the final. However, further research showed me that this was one of only 2 WTA clay tourneys,in Marion's entire career, where she has even reached the semis. The results indicate that this is her weakest surface when the competition is highest,so I didn't feel quite so depressed after this(STILL not thrilled,of course).Even world #1 Sharapova is weak on clay--and it's also Serena's most vulnerable surface--so this puts Marion in elite company. As with other Marionettes,I'm hoping that the smell of grass will rejuvenate her.......that's ASSUMING that the crappy,God-forsaken British weather doesn't wash out the ENTIRE run of tourneys.;)

Personally I'd be glad to watch the match take some pics from where I sit and most important just see her win and fight in the match. If that's the case my day is good and I dont want to "elbow" my way in front to get an autograph. :o
