This is probably a dumb question but are Ana Bogdan and Elena Bogdan related? I don't see how they can be sisters as they are born eight months apart but perhaps cousins or something. Or maybe Bogdan is just a very common name in Romania and the fact that Romania has two talented young Bogdan girls is just a coincidence.

Is just a name coincidence between Ana and Elena (Ema) Bogdan:D.

She is destined to be a favorite of mine. Look how inconsistent she is. She went from losing to Naomi Broady at Wimbledon juniors to beating a Top200 WTA player in the same month. Well done Ana. :yeah:

Translation of the interview
At 16, Ana Bogdan is one of the most promising players in the world. Evidence is given by her second place at ITF Juniors rankings in 2008. The beautiful Romanian, who loves France, is determined to go far.

Ana Bogdan, you are one of the best junior players in the world. What memories do you keep of 2008?
I am really pleased to have finished the year at the number two rank. It is a very important rank to me. I recall very tough matches where I held on, even when things went wrong for me. I remember my victory at the Osaka Mayor's Cup which is my first major title. Finally, my two tournaments in Mexico that took place during my birthday and I played two finals in singles and doubles.

Do you feel that you have particularly progressed during 2008?
Yes, I feel I have accumulated more experience than in previous years. I have also added more variety in my game. It is very important to me.

Tell us about your early days in tennis ...
I started playing at 8. My father was a ski instructor and he wanted to make me a champion of skiing. A winter without snow was enough to turn to another sport and it was tennis. That's how it began. One of my peculiarities is that I am left-handed but I play with the right hand on the advice of my coach.

How does your training go?
I'm training at home in Romania, Sinaia, often with a ball machine because there are no opponents. I'm the only professional player in my town. My father has been my trainer for four years. It's really at the age of nine that I had the desire to make tennis my job. Initially, I did not have very good results and since I’m 13, I only played ITF tournaments. It is from there that I started to play my best tennis.

Is this particular train with your father?
It's nice to work with him, even if sometimes we annoy each other (laughs). It must be the same for players who work with their father or mother! He knows me perfectly. He is a very good father and a very good coach. I admire him a lot.

Do you think you will stay in Romania for training in the following years?
Yes, and every year I spend three months in France to train. I also went to Bradenton in November 2008 to spend five weeks at the Bollettieri Academy. I do not know yet my program in 2009.

What goals have you set for this year?
I want to win a Grand Slam tournament and be number one in juniors. I'm aiming for a place in the top 300 in the WTA rankings. In juniors, I'll play only Grand Slams and also ITF tournaments.

What is the program for the beginning of your season?
I will play the Australian Open Juniors and then return home for two months. Then spend two and a half months in Nice and I think playing the ITF tournament of Cagnes-sur-Mer. Then there will be Roland Garros that I love, I can not wait to be there.

"My idols? Federer et Jankovic”
There are many promising players in Romania: what do you think the players of Team GDF SUEZ Sorana Cirstea and Raluca Olaru?
Sorana really had a good progress in 2008; it was a good year for her. She’s a very strong player and is likely to climb in the WTA rankings. I congratulate her for her excellent results. Unfortunately, I know less Raluca Olaru. She’s 130 in the WTA rankings and is one of the best Romanian players.

What are the players that you admire most?
I love Roger Federer, his way of being on the court, the king of tennis! I also like Feliciano Lopez for his combativeness. He has progressed a lot. He is a very strong player and someone good. And among women, Jelena Jankovic because she has a varied game. She’s always relaxed on the court. She is a nice and funny.

Who are your best friends on the tour?
I have many friends in tennis, many French, Belgian, English, Danes and Romanians of course. I will not mention anyone; I’m too scared to forget someone (Smile).

What do you do with your time outside of tennis?
I do not have much free time after tennis so most of the time, I study. But as soon as I find time I go out with my friends, I go to the movies, I read or I practice other sports such as basketball, football, skiing or swimming. For now, I have no boyfriend, I prefer to focus on my career and my studies. This will be later (smile).

What do you think of France?
I love this country. Nice, Monaco and Paris are beautiful cities full of life. I love to spend time there. It is a stylish and warm country. This is the first foreign country where I went with my parents when I was two. My father came to France to teach skiing. We have many friends in France. Indeed, I speak French, I studied it at school.

The place is her high school gym, and yes it's the place where she learned to play tennis. The Principal of the High School ("Mihail Cantacuzino Collage" from Sinaia pics (http://colegiulsinaia.xhost.ro/album.html)) where she learns made her a suprise, she brought all the students and the teachers in the gym to watch one of Ana's games, and she saied she's really pround of Ana (she was no. 2 in junior rankings at the time)

^^ she was in Liverpool and she defeted Martina Hingis :D It seems that she had an injury (muscle rupture) that kept her away from court for 2 months that;s why she didn't play in this period

Bogdan stuns Hingis on Centre Court
http://www.liverpooltennis.co.uk//news/bogdanstunshingisoncentrecourt.phuse

http://www.liverpooltennis.co.uk/res/media/jpg/100620040Liverpool_Tennis_D5_417x277.jpg
17-year-old Ana Bogdan shocked the Liverpool International this evening, beating Martina Hingis in straight sets as the tournament came to a close.

The Romanian junior battled through injury and a range of emotions to win 6-4, 6-4 in the biggest match of her career.

“This day is the best day of my life and I won’t forget it.” said Bogdan.

The former junior world number two came into this year’s tournament after two months out with a muscle rupture. As a result, the Romanian struggled to get going in her opening matches, narrowly missing out on qualification for the women’s final.

But her performance here today proved beyond any doubt her billing as one of world’s top young prospects, as she bullied Hingis into an unlikely changing of the guard on Centre Court.

The Romanian held her own in the opening stages but it was a slip in the ninth game that proved the turning point. The fall caused further injury to Bogdan but at 0-30 on the Hingis serve she was determined to carry on. Hingis fought back as the youngster’s movement looked laboured, but the injury forced Bogdan to go on the attack, hitting a succession of winners and keeping the points short.

Her powerful groundstrokes took their toll on an aging Hingis and the Romanian broke for the first time before serving out to win the set 6-4.

The 29-year-old hit back in the second though, almost as if both women began to register the prospect of an upset. Hingis raced into a 4-1 lead but with it crept in complacency and Bogdan took advantage.

The youngster broke back and won three games in a row to level at 4-4, as Bogdan and Centre Court began to believe. The 17-year-old handled her nerves brilliantly and seemed to use her injury as motivation to break for a second time and serve for the match.

In doing so, it would have been natural for the Romanian to falter, but she did anything but, quickly securing three match points before serving out with an ace to win the biggest match of her career.

“It’s a pleasure for me to play against Martina, she was one of the best players in the world and she still is. It’s true that I had a lot of emotions on the court because she is who she is but I just played my best, it was unbelievable.” said Bogdan.

Meanwhile Hingis remained gracious in defeat, praising the youngster’s impressive performance: “She played very well, I had my chances in the second set but I let it go, but she played wonderful. She’ll be here for a while longer that’s for sure.”

I know everyone on TR is impressed with Simona conquering Moscow title today, but Ana's performance in Antalya shouldn't go unnoticed, especially it comes on claycourt, perhaps her least favourite surface.

 Didn't even realize the Antalyas could be played on different surfaces. I just assumed they were all on HC. Hopefully she keeps playing well, but this has been a great year for her!

Most improved player of the year, in my opinion.

I know you're ironic, but she did improved this season. She finished 2012 ranked outside top 500 (538) and has a good chance to finish 2013 inside top 300. It all depends on how she does next week in Nanjing. I know she got her ranking mostly by whoring 10K's in Antalya, but it was still a pretty good year for Ana. She's still young :)

It was actually more of a pun in view of the in my opinion useless category of 'most improved player'.

How do you define which player improved most? Surely Simona improved a whole lot, but what about players like Siniakova or Hibino?

It's all too fishy for my liking, because improvement is only able to be measured in view of the place or position from which you started.

The award is called WTA's Most Improved Player. If it was called ITF's Most Improved Player I'm pretty sure Siniakova, Ozaki (or Hibino) would have made great candidates. But at this point they play little if anything on the WTA tour. As for the utility of the award itself, I know it's just a silly mention and not the Nobel Prize for World Peace, but as long as it's there I just hope the winner will be the player who deserves it most this year, the one who won 5 WTA titles in 6 months :)

If it's called 'WTA most improved player' I will take back what I said because this indeed indicates that certain player was already participating regularly at WTA events, even before her visible improvements.
