Really don't want to retire anyone - have already waved goodbye to Paszek and Mauresmo :wavey:

I know the tournaments go quite quickly, but new points for every 4th tournament isn't much to ask. Plus, the players that seem to be getting the dcent results are the ones who are constantly changing/modifying their points!!

Peer Readies for Bangalore

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b241/FlamingoSpice/ShaharNewYear-1.jpg
New world number one, Shahar Peer of Israel takes a second from practicing to take a picture for a fan in Bangalore, India.

Newly crowned world's number one, Shahar Peer arrived in Bangalore with warm welcomes from many. Last week in Dubai, Peer's outstanding 14 match streak came to an end in the finals when she lost to Ioana-Raluca Olaru in three sets. However, an optimistic Peer says that she will concentrate strictly on her tennis this week, especially in doubles.

Press: You face Jessica Moore in round one, any thoughts?

Peer: I'm just going to go out there and play my best and see what happens.

Press: No remarks this week?

Peer: (Laughs) Nope.

Press: What are your plans for this week?

Peer: Definently I want to spend more time with Nathalie (Dechy) and work on our doubles game. I think part of being a great player is knowing how to adjust your game not in just singles, but in doubles as well.

Press: So this week you want the doubles title?

Peer: (Laughs) Well who doesn't? No, I'm just saying I think Nathalie and I need to work on our doubles a little more, maybe we could win but I'm not expecting anything big. I'm just looking for us to improve before we start winning.

Press: Are you excited about Fed Cup?

Peer: Very much, I'm very confident in my team. We're all top 10 players and we've all been having pretty good results lately. So I think we have a good chance to win.

Press: Well thank you very much for your time.

Peer: Anytime, thanks bye.

Moore Up for Battle of Bangalore

Bangalore, India - Having brushed aside a dismal 6-0 6-4 loss to Shahar Peer in the semi finals of Dubai last week, 17 year old Jessica Moore has jetted in to Bangalore determined to exorcise her demons. Like Peer, Moore has surprisingly refused to comment on the ongoing fued between the two players, instead talking up the match as a ''Batlle of Bangalore,'' for which she was ready to win.

But it will be no easy task. Peer this week ascended to World No.1 for the first time in her career and has been in red hot form over the past three weeks. This has included two victories over Moore during this timeframe. Included in those two losses were the loss of two sets 6-0. But Moore remains unfazed, ''If I go out there, play hard and keep a positive mind frame, I can win.''

''My coach and I have been working on some weaknesses in my game and I am now ready for the challenge. I am looking forward to playing here in Bangalore this week...may the best player win!''

Interview

Q: How are you feeling Venus?
A: I'm feeling well, still feeling fit and ready to play

Q: Happy to be playing in Bangalore?
A: Look at me, they totally decked everyone out. This is going to be a great event and I think the players should have a lot of fun here. Lots of publicity more than likely. I see Shahar's publiscist is waisting any time.

Q: What do you think about your chances here in India?
A: Just like any of my other chances I think. Good.

Q: Your results haven't been that good as of late, how are you looking to turn that around here?
A: Just making adjustments to my game. That's really all a player can do.

Q: What do you think of the speed of the season?
A:  well it's a little tough to keep up with. I mean, I send my publicisit to post something for me and we've already began a new event. I was so embarrased. Anyway, no complaints, I'm having fun.

Q: Good Luck Venus.
A: Thanks.

Battle Of The Beauties In Bangalore

http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/43022000/jpg/_43022181_ivsha_getty_416.jpg

The most anticipated match in the first round is between two beauties, Russian Maria Sharapova and Serbian Ana Ivanovic. Ana Ivanovic is the favourite coming into this match as she is the number 5 seed. But Sharapova says that she is ready for the challenge.

When asked what she thought about the match, Sharapova said "I'm confident, I haven't been playing well in the past couple of weeks, but I know when I'm at the top of my game, I can beat anyone. So I'm confident."

Olaru through to face Sharapova.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v431/Derek1206/Olaru1-2.jpg

Dubai Champion, Ioana Raluca Olaru, enjoyed a straight-forward first round victory over Australian Sam Stosur in Bangalore, India. The Romanian was rarely pushed in her 62 62 victory that lasted just three minutes short of one hour. Next up for the teenager will be Russian Maria Sharapova, who took down fith seed Ana Ivanovic, after trailing 06 05 to post a 06 75 60 victory.

"I was nervous before today because it was important for me to keep my winning streak up. I didnt want Duabi to look like a fluke so the aim was to go there and win comfortably. I think I did that. This week im going to try and wrap my matches up as quickly as possible. I want to save energy for the Fed Cup. Its important for me to do well for my team there"

"However, I dont think anything is going to come easy against Sharapova. She is one of those players who one minute you could be bagelling and the next she will bagel you back. Im guessing a wierd looking scoreline. Im going to have to play at a consistent, high standard. That is what my main focus will be when I go on to court. Im on a winning streak of 6 matches. I dont want that to end"

Sharapova Battles Back In Bangalore

http://img111.imagevenue.com/loc952/th_53954_mariaqfrg073_123_952lo.jpghttp://img102.imagevenue.com/loc1083/th_54472_mariaqfrg0720_123_1083lo.jpg

In ONE of the most anticipated match of the 1st round, Maria Sharapova and Ana Ivanovic didn't disappoint the crowd, who came to see this "Battle of The Beauty in Bangalore". At first, it was Ana Ivanovic who brought her game to the court, and Maria Sharapova looks as though she would get a double-bagel in her life. 0-6 0-5 down, Maria Sharapova talked to her coach during the changeover. It didn't seem to help her at first as she went down 2 match points, but Sharapova showed her grit and determination and fought back. She finally got on the board and the crowd went on the feet.

As Ivanovic lost confidence, Sharapova grew in confidence and took the next 7 games and brought the match back to level at 1 set all. It seems to be one of the best comebacks ever. Sharapova continued this form in the third set, not dropping a game and she won the match, 0-6 7-5 6-0, when Sharapova hit a backhand crosscourt winner. The crowd gave her a standing ovation as Ivanovic left the court in tears. It was a "Typical Maria" match.

*"Typical Maria": meaning that Sharapova won the match after being down 0-5 in a set. :p

Interview after the match

Well Done Maria!
Thank you

What was going through your mind at 0-6 0-5 when you were down match points?
Well, to be honest, I was sh*t scared. But and then I looked at my coach and he was still watching and he was urging me on. And I started thinking. I haven't gone for my shots, so why not give it a try, I can't do any worse than what I'm doing now. And I think she was playing her shots safe, maybe she was nervous, double-bagling someone, and maybe she was thinking ahead, I don't know. But she helped me

We saw that, in the first two sets, you weren't hitting the ball very well, you were hitting it down the middle and Ana was just dictating play.
Yeh, you know, I think I felt the pressure, I don't know why, but it should be her feeling the pressure *laughter* seeing as how she is the higher ranked. But yeh, in that first set and beginning of second, I was just not going for my shots. I just kept trying to hit it back.

In the end of second set and third set, you were dictating play, hitting the balls from corner to corner and hitting them with a lot of power and depth.
Yeh, I was just like, I'm going for my shots, I knew she would attack every ball that is attackable.

Olaru next, what are your expectations, and how would you like to improve for the next match?
Well maybe, I would try to get a game in the first set, and maybe have a stronger start, you know, my serve was everywhere today and my volleys were a bit off. But you know... I will just have to focus and I think I can beat her if I play my best. You know, it's always good to have a strong start, but it doesn't really matter if you win, it's better late than never right. ;)

Good luck on your next round Maria and we will talk to you really soon.
Thank you!

Nicole Vadisova Hopes For The Best

After a string of disappointing losses, Nicole Vaidisova hopes to get back on track. The blonde vixen has failed to live up to her seeding and reach the quarter finals of her last two events. Vaidisova hopes that this can be the tournament where she breaks through to another final or better yet a win. Today she was in fine form against the very talented Venus Williams. Nicole played beautifully, trading power shots with the American and came up with some big serves at clutch moments in the match to win 7/5,6/3. Next up is Davenport, a player who Vaidisova hasn't had any success against. Their last meeting was in the quarterfinals of Paris which Davenport won in straight sets. Nicole Vaidisova hopes this time she will be the last the woman standing.

Injured Reena through first round

http://cornedbeefhash.files.wordpress.com/2007/12/serena-nike-hopmancup2.jpg
Serena Williams couldn't believed she found a way to pull off that match against Jelena Dokic today.

There was some drama on court today! While it was 3-3 in the first set Serena Williams was running side to side and badly fell on the court, hurting her left wrist. Serena tanked the end of this game to take a medical time out. The medical staff heavily taped the wrist of Reena and it obviously was harming Serena, she tanked the end of the set and went down 3-6. Serena than took another medical time out, but this time she went off the court. Dokic had the time to go to the bathroom, hit some serves, eat a banana and she finally got in a wild discussion with the umpire that ended in her getting a warning. Reena finally came bakc on court after 15-20 minutes and said she would be able to play.

Serena was definitaly not comfortable on her backhand as she was slicing everything on this side. She still managed to stay in the match hitting as many winners as she could off her forehand. Girls went to a TB, Dokic had double match point up 6-4, but a double fault and an ace from Serena made them go away quickly. At the changeover, Dokic voluntarily hit Serena hoping she could hurt her wrist a little more but fortunaly it didn't work. Serena got really mad and put away the next two points in 15 second to win the second set 7-6(6).

In the third set, Dokic was tired and angry. She was playing as most as possible on Serena's backhand, but it still was pretty efficient cause it always kept the ball pretty low and Jelena wasn't able to do anything with it. Serena broke Dokic of entrance and in 22 minutes took the set 6-1.

After the match Ree said: "I can't believe that she really tried to hurt my wrist evenmore at the changeover in the tiebreak. It really was disrescpectful. I agree that my break at the end of the first set was long, but I needed it. I'm simply just glad to be in the second round, I hope my wrist will be abck at 100% as soon as possible. I had great fighting spirit today, I'm really proud tahtI went through this match. I'm anxious to play the second round!"

PRESS STATEMENT FROM JESSICA MOORE:

In the wake of another disappointing loss to World No.1 Shahar Peer, I have conceded defeat. At this point in time, Peer is just too good for me. Her shot selection is brilliant, her backhand unreadable, and she has an unshakeable sense of self belief. I tried my best but was simply outplayed. I have a lot to work on in my game before I will be able to challenge her. Good luck for the rest of the tournament Shahar.''

Fantastic win for Vaidisova, as she takes out the world #1! The second set was crucial, with Vaidisova grabbing the vital break as Peer served at 4-5. Good turnaround from Serena here, after being 6-0 1-0 down. She really loosened up and the winners began to flow. Aga had no answer to Serena's power play once she got going. Still a decent week from Aga, who has been pretty quiet lately. Serena makes anothr semi, but is yet to make her breakthrough at the semis stage. She gets another pop here in Bangalore!

7-6(3) 3-6 6-3

Safina started to fight back in the third set, but she left it a little late, and Dementieva had just enough to close the door on Safina. Dementieva makes another semi, but like Serena and Vaidisova, is yet to prove she has what it really takes at the "business end" of a tournament.

Sharapova makes what I believe is her first semi final on OWTT. She showed great potential during the pre-season exhibitions but failed to make the transition to competition matches. But she is on a great run here, taking out #5 Ivanovic, last week's winner Olaru, and now #2 Dulko - she looks the in-form player right now!

Vaidisova Disposes of Peer
http://www.tennis.com/uploadedImages/Your_Game/Instruction_Articles/Drills/2006_04_17_nicole_vaidisova.jpg

Despite Golovin and Peer's recent verbal attacks on Vaidisova, neither were able to walk the walk here at Bangalore. Golovin crashed out early while Vaidisova for the second time in two meetings defeated Peer. Nicole once again has the chance to prove that she is one of the elite players of OWTT by winning her first title. In her next round she faces the big serving American Serena Williams. When asked about her semi final against Williams, Vaidisova simply stated, "She's not the player she used to be". If Nicoles's forehand is anything like it was today against Peer, Serena is in for a long day at the office.

Sharapova: Deja Vu

http://wtaworld.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=51487&stc=1&d=1208724855

Sharapova had exactly the same scoreline as yesterdays match, was down, 0-6 0-5 and then won the next 13 games to take the match 0-6 7-5 6-0. Sharapova said that she didn't realise until she finished, and she said she didn't care, as long as she wins.

One hour later she had to step out on the court to face current world number 2 Gisela Dulko of Argentina. The first four games were holds of serve, but Sharapova stepped it up a bit in the fifth game and took the next 4 games to take the set 6-2 when Dulko netted a forehand.

In the second set, Dulko upped her game and raced to a 4-1 lead, as Sharapova desperately didn't want to go to another 3 setter, she also upped her game and leveled it back to 4-4. Each playerr then held serve, but in the tenth game, it was Sharapova who made the crucial break and she went to serve for the match and she did it with style holding to love and won it on an ace.

Sharapova will now face Elena Dementieva, who is the only top four seed remaining. She said that if she played like today, she knows she will win.

Serena feels better and better!

http://cache.20minutes.fr/img/photos/afp/2008-04/2008-04-03/article_photo_1207255322793-1-0.jpg

Serena Williams injured herself in her first round match against Jelena Dokic, but her wrist seems to be healing quickly. In second round she was facing Maria Emilia Salerni that she trashed last week somthing like 6-0 6-3 or 6-3 6-0. So even with a weak backhand, Serena knew she was batter than her opponent.

So Ree got on court and she was totally overwhelming! Winner volleys, forehand winners and aces were coming one after the others. Salerni tried her best but had no weapon to hurt the American tennis player. After 57 minutes of impressing tennis of Serena, the two girls were at the net shaking hands. The final score was 6-1 6-2. Serena was asked after the match, what she thought about her opponent and said, "She's not that bad, she simply faced me when I was totally on for two weeks in a row. I really played my best tennis in a while today."

Serena's quarterfinal match wasn't an easy one, but definitely a winnable one against Agnieszka Radwasnka. The match started pretty bad for Reena who couldn't keep any ball in play on her forehand and with an uneffective slice backhand. She gave the first set away 0-6. But Serena's fighting spirit came back on top, Williams finally got her game together and she offered a breadstick to the Polish. Third set wasn't more entertaining than the others, Serena overpowered her opponent with some marvelous forehand winners and took the match 0-6 6-1 6-2. After the match Serena said, "I was still sleeping in this first set I would say. She didn't win this set, I lost it. In the two final sets, I was just dominating her, this girl has nothing impressive in her game, plus her second serve was so awful, she needs to work on her all around game."

In her 3rd attempt to make a final of the year, Serena will face the Czech women, Nicole Vaidisova. This girl said about Serena that she wasn't the player she used to be, when we asked Serena to say what she thought about this she answered "I agree with her, I'm not the same player I was before... I've improved a lot, I'm a much better player today."

The CT order didn't affect the winner here - it still would have been 3-6 6-3 6-3 to Vaidisova. Vaidisova just simply outhit Serena, which is difficult to do. Vaidiova gets her shot at another final after falling in her debut in Sydney. She will be hoping for a better result. Still another good week for Serena though - just a few little things she can work on and she will be there for sure! Good match :)

Sharapova looked like she may stage one of her famous comebacks as she fought her way back to 4-4 in the decider, but Dementieva had too much left in the tank, as she raised her game in the final 2 sets to send Sharapova packing. A career best week for Sharapova though :) . Dementieva makes it 2-2 in semifinals for her season, and goes in to her second final, and she will hope for a better result than in Antwerp where she fell to Peer in 3 sets.

The first two sets were just crazy tennis, but the third set was edge-of-your-seat stuff! It looked like Vaidisova had it at 5-3 up, but Dementieva began to find the lines and Vaidisova couldn't do anything. Dementieva was the stronger in the tie-break and Vaidisova seemed distracted once Dementieva's challenge reversed the point. Still a great week for Nicole as sh makes her second final. By virtue of their finishing poisitions here in Bangalore this week, Dementieva will rise to #2 in the world, whilst Vaidisova goes up two places to #5. Well done to both! :)

Peer/Dechy Stun to Title Run

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b241/FlamingoSpice/dech.jpg
Nathalie Dechy holds up her doubles title that she won in Bangalore, India with her doubles partner, Irsael's Shahar Peer. It is unknown where Peer was for the trophy ceremoney on April 20th.

Israel's Shahar Peer said at the beginning of the week that she would like to concentrate on her doubles game with French partner, Nathalie Dechy. The duo had a trip to the finals in Antwerp but since then, have yet to do anything that great. The team, also know as Pechy, took to the courts of Bangalore and practice non-stop. While an early round exit send Dechy out, Peer, who was playing in her first tournament as the top seed, bowed out in the quarterinals.

The duo took out the world's second ranked doubles team made up of Jessica Moore and Nicole Vaidisova in straights: 6-0, 7-5. A little bit of revenge for Peer who was elminated by Vaidisova in the singles competition.

"When we won the first set, I was thinking to myself, 'Also we have to do is keep doing what were doing and we can take the second set.'" Peer said. "But then they started to lift their game up a lot and it seemd like their game clicked and they started playing better."

The Australian/Czech team dominated the second set, blasting out to a 5-2 lead. Pechy started to go for more on their service and made more shots to the net player which really start to apply the pressure for Moore/Vaidisova who lost the next five games to loose the second set, 7-5.

"We knew when we were down at 4-0, 'Hey we need to start doing some more or different cause it's not working right now.'" Nathalie Dechy said.

"I saw Nat just blast one at Nicole and it kind of shook her up a bit so we thought that if would apply the pressure to the net player, who can win a lot of points, we could maybe stay in this set." Peer added.

In the finals match, they took on the worlds number one ranked doubles team, Ana Ivanovic and Patty Schnyder in a suprising war of bagels; 0-6, 6-3, 6-0. After trailing 0-2 in the second set, Pechy won 4 straight games to go up 4-2 before long, they found themselves with a third set oppertunity. In the third set, the Swiss/Serbian team seemed too worn out and Pechy simply breezed past them to capture their first career doubles title.

"I was so amazed. It was such a great feeling, I came here to work on doubles and it seemed that it really paid off. It's great to be able to win in singles and in doubles, I think it's pretty important if you want to be the best, that you be able to play all aspects of tennis." Peer said.

"It's great to win, I knew I'd win with her, and that's why we are a team." a coy Nathalie Dechy said.

-Shahar Peer's coach wishes all a happy 420. :smoke:
