Well, it looks like the USA are fielding their third team, at least if they had Venus or at least someone half-decent they might put up a fight. Should be a stroll in the park for Sveta & Co. - but let's not count our chickens.... ;-)

From tennis.com

"MOSCOW (AP) -Svetlana Kuznetsova will lead defending champion Russia against the United States in the Fed Cup semifinals next weekend.

Russia captain Shamil Tarpishchev also Wednesday named Anna Chakvetadze, Dinara Safina and Elena Vesnina for the match, which will be held April 26-27 on clay at the Luzhniki indoor arena - where Russia beat the Czech Republic in the Davis Cup quarterfinals last weekend.

The United States has yet to name its team.

Australian Open champion Maria Sharapova will skip the match as part of what Tarpishchev has said was an agreement with Kuznetsova.

Sharapova made her Fed Cup debut in the first round against Israel in February.

The United States has won the Fed Cup title for a record 17 times, and is 4-2 against three-time champion Russia."

So do you guys think Sveta will be selected to play final vs Spain? I was talking with Mel yesterday and she told me she read that Tarpishev is not very happy with Sveta after Olympics (what a wise attitude to kick someone when she's down  ) and as I'm going to that final, and my main interest there is to see Sveta,I'm getting a bit worried now.

What criteriums do you think he'll follow to select the team? rankings? current form? having played in previous ties? this last one should be,I don't think it would be fair for the girls who qualified the team to include, let's say Dementieva or Petrova now, only because they have just won titles recently. What do you think?

Also do we know when the team competing will be announced? I guess after US open, right?

Thanks in advance for answers :wavey:

Tarpishev is always like that. He thinks he choose the best players to play, but he forgets the players who helps the team get to the finals. But I can't blame him, he want the titles. And the girls are very loyalty. I don't remember who says no to Fed Cup unless they are injured.

Kuznetsova to lead understrength Russia in Fed Cup final

MOSCOW, Sept 3 (Reuters) - World number four Svetlana Kuznetsova will lead under-strength champions Russia in next week's Fed Cup final against Spain, captain Shamil Tarpishchev said on Wednesday.
Tarpishchev was resigned to fielding a second-string team after Olympic champion Elena Dementieva and Beijing silver medallist Dinara Safina ruled themselves out of the Sept. 13-14 tie in Madrid because of personal commitments.
With Maria Sharapova nursing a shoulder injury and Anna Chakvetadze struggling for form, Tarpishchev had to call up world number 10 and Beijing bronze medallist Vera Zvonareva, 56th-ranked Ekaterina Makarova and number 71 Elena Vesnina.
"This is the best team we could assemble at the moment," Tarpishchev told reporters.
World number seven Safina, who takes on Italian Flavia Pennetta in the U.S. Open quarter-finals in New York later on Wednesday, said it made no sense for her to switch to clay for for one week in the middle of her regular hardcourt season.
World number six Dementieva is already through to the U.S. Open semi-finals.
Both Dementieva and Safina have the chance to replace Ana Ivanovic at the top of the world rankings by winning the final grand slam of the year and Tarpishchev would not jeopardise their chances.
"Dementieva and Safina have a real chance to become world number one so we have to give them a break," he said.
Russia are bidding to win their fourth Fed Cup title in the last five years.

well last year Sveta was playing until the last day of US Open (final) and didn't seem to have a problem with playing for Russia the following weekend :cuckoo: and same was for Anna, who was at the SF stage of the tournament (by the way I think it is unfair and strange she has not been selected to play this time  ).

Finally an article about Sveta in spanish newspapers:
http://www.marca.com/edicion/marca/tenis/copafederacion/es/desarrollo/1163203.html

I don't have now the time to translate it all,but mainly she says the fact the final takes place in Spain, where she lives and trains,is nothing special for her.She says it's only another final for her. That she feels confortable about it,that she knows spanish mentality and habits, but that's all.She doesn't believe that the fact that she lives in Barcelona is an advantage for her.She says she's played another final in Moscow in front of her crowd and lived more special moments there.

The article also says she still has not trained at the courts of Club de Campo Villa de Madrid, because she only arrived yesterday. She hopes to play well, the fact she's played many times on clay make it easy for her to adapt good and without problems.

I have some of the ceremony on my videos, not good quality but I'll post them anyway.I have to upload them first.I don't know how long it will take.

Fantastic experience.Seeing Sveta so happy was just priceless. And Sveta in person is even more charming than what she looks in photos and on tv.I am so glad I saw her close :hearts: well I was a bit impressed in her presence I might say because I'm shy person, the first time I saw her in the alley passing by I didn't even dare approaching her.I took a photo with her,and also one with her mother.I congratulated her on russian victory and how much I like her daughter, that I'm her biggest fan in Spain and that she must be very proud of her.Galina is so nice she said thank you. Well I took photos with all the russian players and with captain Tarpishev as well,it was easy approaching to them and I was sitting very close to russian bench and it was exciting to see all their reactions and cheerings, specially Sveta's mum.I think I was the only spanish cheering for Russia ;)

About the game,Sveta played so good in her first match vs Suarez. It is a real pleasure watching Sveta play when she plays that way and on clay,I have to say I prefer watching the game on clay than on carpet as in YEC.A lot more,in fact.

In the second match,Sveta started so good I could not even believe it :p then she lost her focus as often happens to her and started comitting errors all the time and gave away the set,a shame because it was obvious she could have won the match in straight sets but we all know how prone is Sveta to lapsus during matchs. She looked frustrasted and talked constantly to herself (in russian) and was looking a lot to the russian team bench looking for their support. In second set she played much calmer and much better, taking more time to construct well the points and more focused.Third set was tense.I think both players were very nervous, but Sveta stepped it up in the decisive games of the match.

Overall Sveta has everything in her game and physique to be the best player in the world,it's only mentally she's not there.I read she's going to work now with Morozova.I really hope Olga can give her the mental approach she needs.I'm confident Sveta will be back to her best level.

After the match,Sveta was not watching the doubles match (neither was Vera).I think they both were getting ready for the trophy ceremony. The trophy ceremony was one very touching moment.Sveta really shined, she looked really happy. After the ceremony the press had them take like one million photos :p then she approched to sign things to fans, she gave her hair ribbon, her wristban, her towel to some lucky fans.Someone yelled her "congrats sveta, and now go get the serbs" and she smiled lol really nice with everyone, same for vera and the rest of the russian players i have to say.I think they all had great fun.

well i'm sure i'm forgetting things,i'll tell more if I remember. All I can say is I left Madrid with wonderful experiences.I think I never had so much fun in a tennis competition (not that I have attended a lot) as in this final.
