At least that's what today's press release says:

"Even before the very first serve at the 2008 Qatar Telecom German Open in Berlin (May 5-11) the event boasts a new record: Nine of the Top Tens players have announced their participation at the well-established German women’s tennis event to be played on the courts of the “LTTC Rot-Weiß Berlin”. Headed by Belgium’s Justine Henin (currently World number one on the WTA Rankings), defending champion Ana Ivanovic of Serbia (number 2) up to Slovakia’s Daniela Hantuchova (number 10). Australian Open winner Maria Sharapova of Russia has also entered the event. She won the Amelia Island Tournament last Sunday and thus moved up on the rankings to fourth place. Sharapova is the most successful player this year, having already won three titles and improving her winloss record to 22-1.

It is the first time after 2005 that Maria Sharapova will compete again in Berlin – and a tournament victory in Berlin is what is still missing in her collection. The same holds true for US player Serena Williams (World number nine) who will participate at Germany’s capital for the first time since 2002. Her sister Venus (number 7) is the only Top Ten player who has not entered the Berlin event. Last week she moreover announced that her “leave of absence” will
probably take as long as up to the French Open at the end of May.

The Berlin competitors have already won all the important 2008 events on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour
such as the Grand Slam as well as Tier I and Tier II tournaments."

Don't think all of them will play though. ;)

Maybe Venus will be a late entry considering she pulled out of AI and Charleston?

I think that she confirmed that she's returning at Rome the following week.

I'm happy to see that this grand old tournament, with its origins in the C19th, has an excellent entry list. I hope ebnough of those women turn up to provide some great match-ups and some great matches.

I think after the clay season the top five will have shifted, some are going to lose a lot of points.I see pova at no.2 after the French Open and after Wimbledon a new top five.

use to have all the top ten players..

but Elena as just reentered the top ten...
but shes not in the Rome lineup...
even though she has quarters to defend...

Last week she moreover announced that her “leave of absence” will
probably take as long as up to the French Open at the end of May.

When did she say that actually??

To make it clear it's a press release - not my own words. Concerning Venus: There were several threads about the whole issue in GM.

Yuck...tough field to beat.

This might be the tourney that decides the #2 seed for RG.

She said last week after she pulled out of AI and Charleston that she doesn't expect to return to the tour until Rome, she didn't say anything about waiting until RG as far as I know.

concerning masha and being #2..she may have to win everything she is entered in including RG cause she is defending semis at RG and hope for others not to defend their points...but i do see some changing of the top 5 maybe...

that would be nice, someones success or failure at a tournament having an actual effect on the rankings! i love how unstable this top 5 is this year!!! makes each player's results important to each other..
