First clay title for Maria  and 3rd title of the year

Great week, did well to nab that first set and powered through the second

Domi  Could have should have taken the second, but an amazing week and truly credited herself well with some great play in the final. However she did have a injury start of the second which affected her movement quite a bit

Congrats to Maria, but I don't find her run to the title very impressive. I'd like to see her face off a top 5 player on clay. Sad for Domi. :( She had chances in the first and it seems like she totally gave up in the second.

I was very impressed with Cibulkova's composure in her first WTA final. She played some great clay court tennis. It's too bad that she got that injury in the second set. At least she ended the match respectably.

Maria is 22-1 in 2008.
She reached the RG SF and then won this green clay Tier II, so she has won 9 of her last 10 on clay.
She's getting there.

Lot of trouble in the first set---raised it a level the 2nd---still not that great. But she won.

---lot of trouble managing to win this tournament---she will raise it a level next week. It won't be great---but it will be part of the arc of preparation for France. Especially if she manages to win. She is in unbelievably good physical condition.

Well, there is one girl who isn’t going to win Roland Garros this year and her name is Maria

She sure knows how to make life hard for herself, all week long never able to play consistently well.

But right now that all doesn’t matter, she won her first clay title and already her 3th of the year, congrats Maria!

And just a special note about the point that was robbed from her in the tiebreak, that was unbelievable!

It was good preparation, she faced opponents who are able to get many balls back into play.

It's a real debate because Maria isn't winning 62 62, like we would expect on hardcourt.
But I've seen Maria have hardcourt tournaments like LA 2006 where she wasn't blowing people out. Then she won the USO.

As the clay season plays out, we'll all see how close she is to winning the FO. She has to be a little steadier, but she isn't far away.

YES Maria. :hearts:
Wow at Domi not congratulating Maria in her speech, oh well. Maria so classy and witty as always in hers. Love it so much.

She's had a very hard-fought week, I'm very proud. 3 titles this year, first clay title, how could I ask for more?! :hearts: Now number four in the world, still seems low, but I'm not complaining. The system is there for good reason. Now she still has a lot of room to make up until the YEC really (other than the RG semis, which I think she can get at least close to again).

First set, first point of the tiebreaker, I thought Lynn had unleashed a beast in Maria and she'd take the tiebreak easily after the foot "touching" of the net cord. At least it was exciting though.
And it was inevitable near the end, somewhat sadly, but most importantly it was Maria winning.

Charleston...

Quality was poor but great job Maria, her serving was too strong.

It was really a great week for Domi i hope she keeps it up in Charleston, hopefully the injury doesn't affect her.

Maria still has a long way to go and when she starts facing the likes of Sveta, Ana, Justine and Jelena she will suffer fo sure. She really hasn't played anyone this week up to her mental calibre so Charleston will really be her first test this year. Signs are looking good for her though.

Congrats on your first clay title...FINALLY! But that was some terribly inconsistent performance. Got broken more times than she should have been. Movement is still an issue, especially recovery time after she attempts a slide. A great point almost always followed by an error and double faults coming at the worst of times. :help: But...that was all good enough to earn her her third title of the year! :yippee: And this week more than anything served as great practice for her. I'm just glad she came out to play...the title is icing on the cake.

Maria also said in her speech "Maybe I should skip Miami for a few more years! (laughter) But keep that a secret!"
Or something along those lines.

Also was very congratulatory of the Bovine, saying how its funny to play someone younger, and that she has a good future, bla bla bla, we'll play many more times I'm sure. Yeah it was a fun speech. And she also tried to coax Bausch and Lomb into coming back and supporting.

Does anyone know the guy she kissed right after the match? Was that Roberto or whatever?

To be honest with you, I'd be surprised if she decided to play Charleston after all.

Why are you posting this nonsense in a thread celebrating her win and first clay court title?

What are you trying to prove by pointing out that you want to see her play Justine?

Is anybody here comparing Maria to Justine who is clearly the best female clay courter of her generation??

You are trying to spoil her moment and I am calling you out on it. GET LOST!

:haha: :rocker2:

Spoiler, go away!

YES Maria. :hearts:
Wow at Domi not congratulating Maria in her speech, oh well. Maria so classy and witty as always in hers. Love it so much.

Damnit...my coverage did not show the speeches...:fiery: Can someone say more about it? And I couldn't really tell but did Maria's foot really touch the net? I'm just sure she had already hit the shot way before she got close to the net...

:lol:That's Roberto...I don't know what his job is exactly though. But anyway, thanks for the speech details... @ skipping Miami. The tournament should be thankful she skipped Miami as they wouldn't have had her playing here for hours and hours and hours.... ;)

thats great to hear.. the only way for her to improve on clay is to play lots.. if she plays charleston then its a couple of weeks before the berlin/rome double and then a week before the french open so i think thats enough time for her to recover and be ready for each event... more maria on clay is what i want to see!! since 06 this is only her third clay event, so her winning is pretty good, but the real test(S) will come from charleston...

mixed performance... for every :bounce: winner played Maria played 2 :cuckoo: errors... esp off Dominika's pretty normal serve :cuckoo:
Still sucking on clay, but she's improving!

Not exactly.
I believe, it was 38-33 in winner/errors department, +5 it is.
And this is very good for clay.

Actually, I think Maria's game on the clay is underestimated.
She is a smart girl. She knows that her movement on the clay is sub par, so she tries to compensate it with ball bashing to stop all this stupid movements as soon as possible with a winner.
And this is a risky game.
Although she is dictating the pace of the game, the opponent can win just returning the ball consistently until Maria makes an error. It is what Cibulkova was trying to do.

And if Maria can cut the errors significantly, she can beat everybody even on the clay just blowing them off the court without moving much.
In this situation it almost doesn't matter how good the opponent is playing, it's more about Maria's errors. More exactly, about winners- errors differential. It looked like Dominica played much cleaner game with less errors, but her differential was negative against Maria's positive one.

In fact, Maria plays like that on every surface. The clay is just more difficult to hit clean winners and it disrupts her game.
But if she will minimize the number of errors she can beat everybody even on the clay. :)

With play like that when Maria meets somebody who plays similar game, let's say Lindsey or Serena, the results can be unpredictable and very lopsided. Anyone can blow another from the court, depending on their current form, and we have been witnesses to that not once. :)

And BTW she is young and learning. She even begins to slide on the clay. Dropshots now are regular. Who knows what she can learn else in near future.
I hope , it will not be something too naughty. :D

I'm pretty surprised she's saying she's playing Charleston.

It's in her best interests to play Charleston. It'll allow her to face difficult competition in increments. Amelia Island's competition was easy.. Charleston's will be a bit harder and then Rome and Berlin will be very difficult. It would be hard to jump from this tourney straight to one where she might have to face any combination of Henin/Kuznetsova/Jankovic/Ivanovic/Serena/Venus, etc.

Maria is well-coached. I noticed after her coach told her to hit more up the middle---her opponent started making more mistakes. He pulled her back from trying to do too much---and made her more patient. Picking up subtle experience like that, is what these early clay tournaments are about---Maria learns---and remembers.

I love how there are a bunch of people here insinuating that because the match was poor quality she's less deserving of the title. ANY title on clay for Sharapova is a positive, even if she has to beat Brie Whitehead 7-6 in the third for 5 matches...well not exactly but this is still a good win. Great job by Maria of winning her first clay court title. :clap2: She responded well in more tough situations and really took control in the latter part of the match. This is a great way for her to start out the clay court season. :yeah:

As for Domi, tough loss for the cutie. She played well early on, but really missed out on that golden opportunity up 2-1, 40-0 in the second set. After Maria saved the first two points, Domi got pretty tight and it was all downhill from there. Still she has nothing to be ashamed of. She did a great job in getting to her first career final and reaching the top 30. :clap2:

Pova didn't play Amelia Island to showcase her highly honed, expert level clay court game. She has said repeatedly that she entered AI and Charleston for practice! Her balance is off on the clay, Har Tru is very slippery yielding poor footing, and that is especially evident in her return game. If she can develop better balance through a few matches at Charleston, she'll be in great shape for the Terre Battue at Berlin. The footing is actually better on red clay.

A few days off, a new tournament at Charleston, a new start ... it will be interesting to see if Pova performs better.

1.Ana has played more claycourt tournaments then maria in a shorter amount of time
2.Ana has booked better results then maria on clay
3.Ana has had more solid results over decent claycourters maria has also beaten. Like Schnyder, Anabel Medina Guerrigues, Bondarenko(looking at ana/maria's 2007 and maria's Amelia island)
4.Ana has beaten mauresmo, kuznetsova and jankovic on clay. All of whom have good claycourt records and multiple finals/titles on clay and whom can be considered favourites at claycourt events.

I think this more then enough proves ana has more experience on clay.

Well, there is one girl who isnít going to win Roland Garros this year and her name is Maria

She sure knows how to make life hard for herself, all week long never able to play consistently well.

But right now that all doesnít matter, she won her first clay title and already her 3th of the year, congrats Maria!

And just a special note about the point that was robbed from her in the tiebreak, that was unbelievable!

It was good preparation, she faced opponents who are able to get many balls back into play.

Yeah that was a shocker. Maria did well to hang tough though after that. Congrats to her :) not an easy week at the office at all but she grinded her way to the title which is what champions do.

Domi  couldn't have asked more really performance wise for a player making her debut in her first big wta tournament final. She looked really at at home out there, so composed throughout and without a doubt this is the first of many more major finals she'll be reaching in her career ;)

Apr 14th, 2008, 12:04 AM
Guess what? It doesn't matter when she wins it or who she faces as long as she has the slam title/grand slam. There won't be an asterix that says 'won in absence of Justine, WS, Kuzy'.
I mean Amelie only played 4 complete matches to the Aussie Open title. It doesn't make it any less a title so please stop trying to piss on Maria's moment.
Oh yes it does. The fact that most people only remember who won does not make all GS titles equal. Good for Amelie she won a "real" one later that year, because this AO title has some reason to be viewed as one with an asterisk (Asterix is the French comic book warrior).
A career Grand Slam, however, cannot be treated the same, as clearly if a player wins a major on every surface lucky draws would have little to do with it. Personally I don't think that Maria would ever win the RG, though I wouldn't bet my house against it.

I actually wouldn't say Sharapova sucked in this match at all. She had a relatively even winners to errors ratio, at least based on the stats that ESPN showed when they showed them. A lot of top players/big hitters will miss some on clay, but strategically she played the right match. I was impressed overall. I still don't like her chances against Henin/Ivanovic/Kuznetsova on the red stuff, but with the right draw and the right day...

I really like this Dominika Cibulkova. Like Radwanska and Cornet, I think she's really exciting for the game. These three youngsters have a lot of talent to go far, and most importantly they play different, interesting games. I like that Dominika and Agnieska will stand far in on Maria's serve and put pressure on her. I like that they can drop shot, mix up the spins, and be consistent. I like that Alize is willing to go to net. I hope they all have a great week in Charleston despite their tough draws!

Does this title even mean anything?

:tape: Love this post...:help:

With this title win, Maria...got her 1st clay title...earned her 3rd title of the year (most so far this year)...won her 19th WTA tour title overall...maintains her race points leader standing...climbed to number 4 in the world (closes the gap even more)...got some much needed practice and match play on clay... :yippee:

In other words, that was a stupid question...

Funny, Masha appears like she's sitting down, but still tall.
