Kumiko's playing with zero confidence right now, she's won one set all year. She should get a few wins soon on the Asian challengers coming up soon.

The way I see it, there is only one honorable option for Kumiko Iijima:

Extremely bad. I saw her hit an amazing zero winners in that first set. Alex wasn't hitting many winners, either. Endless UEs from Kumiko. What a worthless player. :help:

Alex will probably lose her 2R if Schruff isn't playing like uber shit.

Lexy, that's great!

But I also looked at Ijima's results, and she hasn't won a match this year. But last year she played very well on the ITF circuit (she even won a 25K tournament in Japan). This year she only won one set against Carly Gullickson.

So - either Lexy is in form, or Kumiko is without it. But I hope Stevenson qualifies :)

I had a glance over Iijima's record and in her 10 years on the tour, her best wins are over the world 172 (Morita, 2 yrs ago) and 200 (Namamura) last year. In short, she is only as high ranked due to playing rubbish $25k and $50k events in Japan and other eastern countries and beating players ranked 350 and 400. No wonder once she tries and plays in more competitive events, she gets totally trashed, and let's face it, this is hopeless for a tier I qualifier, compare it to somewhere like Filderstadt, which isn't even a tier I. I really think that the tour should bring back quality points so that this sort of deadbeat player never gets into the top 200.

Unlike I would say 90% of the people on this board, I have never ever said a player should retire following a loss. But this match, probably, is the closest I have come to being tempted to utter those words. Not good Kumiko. :help:

Oh come on. You KNOW it's just because Lexy is back to her Wimbly semi destructo-uber-form. She'll win the thing. THE WHOLE DAMNED THING. :secret:

very harsh words for kumiko,id hardly call the japanese 25k's and 50'ks rubbish, kumiko had a great year last year and did win a couple of japanese 25k's,she is having a horror start to 2008,i saw her play at the ao in melb qualies she wasn;t disgraced in her loss to former top 40 player llagostera- vives.as another poster pointed out kumiko without a doubt hasn't played before on green clay adding her 0-7 w-l record this year id say her confidence is pretty low, she'll bounce back,i still would've expected a better showing if not a win against a twilight player like stevenson. kumiko is no deadbeat!:

kumiko hasn't been a pro for 10 years,i believe she only turned pro a few years ago,she did beat former top100 player fujiwara and former top 150 player another compatriot hisamatsu, kumiko:awww:
