This is such a big letdown. The winner of Cibulkova/Cornet, please win the title or you risk letting Maria win her first claycourt title Henin-in-Antwerp-style. Sorry Masha fans but I can't stand that.

Similarity to Antwerp: Chakvetadze and Hantuchova are the second and third seeds and they are both upset early on.

That was an exception, but I still want to point out:

R64 d. Davenport...who was playing really badly.
R32 d. Vesnina...no surprise.

intresting fact, since the oz open in wta events sharapova has beaten only 2 top 20 players, chakvetadze has beaten 5 yet chaky's in a slump and marias the #2 player in the world apperently. im not saying annas better but is maria realy playing that well, we cant realy tell as shes not played any top players apart from sveta (a loss) since january, she needs a tough draw soon as i wanna see where shes realy at. i hope she plays charleston but i get the feeling she will pull out avoiding the big names again.

In fact you want to point out the fact that Maria has absolutely nothing to do with the level of her opponent. So, we could have given her draw to Kleybanova, that's her who would have prevailed at the end of the tournament. I got it! :o

On a more serious note, Maria won 3 GS. When you defeat a HEALTHY Serena Williams in a GS final, let alone in Wimbledon, you're somebody in my book.

Your "pointing out" has the profound stupidity that bias brings. You have to admit, nobody was playing particularly well except Maria. An overview of how they played:
1. Maria

2. Ana

3. Jelena

4. Dani
5. Aga, Serena
7. Venus

8. Henin
__100 lines__

128. Bartoli :)

Give me an example of 128 players playing their best in a slam, when a player lost she always looked bad, even if it's her components who made her look bad. But hey Mr./Ms. Excuses, life sucks, if you have to tell yourself that people succeed because they are lucky and losers are just the unlucky pack to comfort yourself, fair enough, but saying it out loud is lame ;)

its not just maria this year is pissing me off in that serena turns up for a couple of events wins them, marias done the same as has henin. i want them all at the same events! All 3 were at the last 4 majors.
Those players aren't as concerned with WTA events. They want more slam titles

If you play bad, even a soft draw won't help.
If you play great, you make your draw look soft.

It depends on the player. For example, Nakamura playing great would only lead to winning a game or two against Dechy.

its not just maria this year is pissing me off in that serena turns up for a couple of events wins them, marias done the same as has henin. i want them all at the same events!

Excuse me but Doha's draw was NOT supposed to be weaker than Dubai, Venus was just replaced by Hénin amoung the contenders, that's it. And Maria was supposed to play both Doha and Dubai this year, same goes for IW and Miami like she always did since forever, is just a matter of circumstances.
She's certainly not of the race of those who play MM tournaments to pretend they're the SHIT in finals.

No, you implied she's not playing well but is winning anyway because she AVOIDS top players, nuance. That explains my comparison with Chokevetadze which has a hoorendous record against GS champions (past and present) and plays MMTs to win without any glory (but Rosmalen, she did a great job there)

Maria gave everyone their money's worth to the best of her ability. It was almost like a training exercise to improve her claycourt game. She could still lose in the final---the extra day of rest might curtail the adrenaline, and whoever the finalist is will have a lot to play for---kind of like Maria's long match towards the end of 2003.

She has tried a few new tricks, gave us some drama and humour, and did not fold under intense pressure.

I am not applying for a refund on my cable tv fees this week.

What? It happened in the past that a player won a match by walkover and then she got booed by the crowd the next day..'cause felt cheated out of a match. I can imagine that Maria vs Lindsay is a high profile match and that now that it didn't take place, the crowd might feel cheated out of a good match...might take their frustrations on Maria.

Sharapova receives bye into final

Sharapova is into her first clay-court final
Maria Sharapova reached the final of the Amelia Island championships in Florida after Lindsay Davenport withdrew because of illness.

Davenport, who felt unwell after beating Agnes Szavay in Friday's quarter-finals, said: "I returned to my hotel where the doctor came to see me.

"Unfortunately, I was running a fever, had aches and pains and a headache. Those symptoms have worsened today."

Sharapova will meet Slovakia's Dominika Cibulkova or France's Alize Cornet.

Sharapova moves into the final of a clay-court tournament for the first time and said she could use a day of rest having played back-to-back three-set matches that took a total of six hours and 11 minutes to complete.

"I've obviously been playing a few more hours than I wanted to in the last few days," said the Russian world number five.

That was an exception, but I still want to point out:
R128 d. Kostanic Tosic...no surprise.
R64 d. Davenport...who was playing really badly.
R32 d. Vesnina...no surprise.
R16 d. Dementieva...who is inconsistent. She bagels Shahar but then gets bagelled herself. I don't know about this.
QF d. Henin...was and is injured. Her knee does not let her run like she used to.
SF d. Jankovic...who was also injured.
F d. Ivanovic...who played like sh*t.

Truly pathetic. :haha: Surprise surprise.......Maria simply was the best player at the AO. Deserved it completely. Deal with it. :awww:

Sounds like Lindsay caught the flu... She said she believes this is the first time she's had to pull out for sickness (as opposed to injury) in her 16 years on the tour.

It's a real shame. This has been such an exciting tournament all week long.

That said, it's quite pathetic (though hardly surprising) that ESPN2 didn't show the other semifinal instead. This was an opportunity for them to showcase two exciting young talents who are little known to casual American fans. They obviously want to keep it that way. :weirdo:

Lindsay withdrew due to an illness that she may have caught from Jagger. She woke up with aches and pains and was feeling dizzy and couldn't get out of bed. She said the tournament doctor came to see her at her hotel after she won her quarter final and it's gotten worse since then to the point where she couldn't play.

Yea cause she faked the back injurie at IW, her favorite tournament of the tour and now AI, her favorite clay court tournament . It makes sense.

well she's plainly annoying She always makes up excuses like the one about her son having fever or something. Or retired at the middle of the macth agains Jelena without really showing any sign of injury. She was just being owned and she doesn't like that. I defended her at that time but it's happening over and over again, it's very poor sportmanship. I mean you have some fever? Just try and go to play, it may get better it's not the dead of winter... If you lose or get bagelled then what? At least you tried. Jelena played under antibiotics and was playing like shit but still fought out there.
I'm not surprised why the Williams sisters own her and eclipsed her, they have more sportmanship and are not afarid to play with injuries/not best conditions.

For Lindsay to withdrawn mid match like she did at Indian wells it must have been really bad she doesn't even get the trainer out on court unless there is something seriously wrong. For Lindsay to withdraw before a match she must have been not able to play and most likely did it on doctors advice. She was feeling dizzy according to the net report. You're dickhead who is most likely taking pleasure out of this.

She has never ever used one of her son's illness as an excuse. Lindsay fainted at home two year ago having the same kind of illness so I think it was the right decision to withdraw from her match against Maria today. It's only the second time in 51 matches she has played since her comeback that Lindsay had to retire. It's just bad luck that It happened two times in the last three tournaments she played. God, you're retarded. Either get a life or get a clue. She was fucking ill. What, you wanted to see her throw up on court after 2 games? She just wasn't ready to play, so get the hell off her back. I'm sure if Ana had done the same thing you'd be the first to defend her. So give it a break and stop being a hater. Really, no one appreciates any of it.

Those weren't excuses; those were different ways of looking at it. Justine at her best does not get bagelled. Jelena at her best does not call for the trainer in every changeover. Ana at her best does not try to hit inside-out backhands instead of a crosscourt forehand.

That doesn't mean I'm not giving Maria the credit she is due. She definitely played great in Oz, and by the way I actually love her game because of its intensity and effectiveness. But the fact is, although she might still have had won Oz even if everyone was playing at the top of their game, it wouldn't have been as easy. It's nice that she's taking the best of her chances, and she was mentally strong enough to pull through this week.

I admire her for saying "Champions take chances and pressure is a privilege" because that is true. All I'm saying is that Ana should have played to defend her points and also bring something more to this tourney. She didn't take that chance so she's not a champion this week.

Still going with this line of thinking, huh? Seriously I don't think you have read or remember every single post by Sharapova's fans...I for one never said anything like that and I guarantee you that many of Maria's fans never said anything like that. Point is, generalizing is stupid. :weirdo:

And please why are we even focusing on an RG semi...my gosh...in the first place, we were talking about winning a slam....and the pathetic posts by some fans in here...

 No, I'm not. I said guarantee, right?...Certainly not the 'ALL' you mentioned. You're the delusional one for saying that. In addition, totally biased against Sharapova's fans. That was my point. Go back to those threads if you like. As I said, generalizing is stupid. I hope you didn't ignore that. ;)

Ugh some bad health luck for Lindsay the last month. Hopefully, she will recover to get to Russia and than I hope she decides to skip Rome and just rest before the grass-court season.

When Lindsay announced her play schedule I thought she might have some injury issues with the work load but I never thought illness would enter into the deal. I can't agree with you more Jakeev. I hope she wasn't serious about playing Rome as I'm pretty sure it after the fed cup so there would be no benefit in Lindsay playing it. I just hope Lindsay gets better soon and hopefully can play in the fed cup and then start training for Wimbledon. :)

As for the daggers coming out. Lindsay withdrew of a tennis match sure a lot of people were disappointed not to see Lindsay play Maria as they had never played on clay before but at the end of the day it was just a tennis match the way some people responded you would've thought Lindsay had murdered someone. Some people need to get a grip. :)

This is a good thread. If Maria wins this final she will have a RG SF followed by a Tier II green clay title.
Off those results, it's easy to make a case that Maria is top 5 on clay right now.
It's too bad Lindsay wasn't healthy, this would have told a lot about how good Maria is on green clay.

lol is it her problem if the whole top 10 players are losing before facing maria?
no it isn't. if the top players lose it's their own fault. in this case maria is a deserved #2.
sorry but i don't know what you mean. surely you meant to say deserved #5?

When Serena said Justine won because she hit some lucky shots, it was just different way of looking at it, not excuse, we all knew it

I wonder how you look at Ivanovic's wins in a different way? Maybe facing Kuznetsova (who has a terrible record in finals) in the finals of her two Tier 1's, hmmm... The other tier 1, I think it can be grouped into your "No Surprise" category :tape:

I actually think Ana gets cakewalk draws way too often, and somehow she always faces Sveta in finals. I view that as sheer dumb luck. Of course I'm happy for her when she gets a Tier 1, but like I said in another thread, I support Ana because she let Justine have an ace at the French final and I like her game, just as I like Sharapova's game. I like Sharapova's charisma in speeches too, but she's not one of my faves only because the way she looks at her opponents scares me. :)
