View Full Version : Longest matches in WTA history?

I keep finding out little snippets about long matches in the WTA. I read that Sharapova defeating Medina Garrigues was the 12th longest at 3 hours 27 mins and Medina Garrigues defeating Shahar Peer in Canberra was the 9th longest at 3 hours 37.

I remeber Daniilidou and Peer had an extremely long match at Indian Wells, but can't remeber the match time.

Does anyone know the list in order? The top 20?

Or any other matches that passed the 3 hour mark?

I find it really interesting because it totally extinguishes the "women only play 3 sets" argument.

Hmmm, I don't think it extinguishes the argument at all. 3 hour matches are an exception rather than a rule. An equivalent men's match at a slam would be 5 hours plus. I'd be interested to know the stats though.

One of the longest finals I remember was Graf vs Sanchez-Vicario at the French Open in 1996.

Graf edged out Aranxta in an epic, 10-8 in the final set.

I believe that was not far off four hours?

The longest match in WTA history occurred in the first round of the Ginnys of Richmond (Va) $50,000 tournament on 24 September 1984 between Vicki Nelson-Dunbar and Jean Hepner. They managed to complete a meagre two sets in almost 6 and a half hours before Nelson-Dunbar prevailed 6-4 7-6 (13-11). Here's a link to a story about the match:

How long was the Eastbourne 2007 Final?

I was there and I don't remember it being over 3 hours.

I think that's the thing with grass, the matches are never as long as the points can always be ended with a winner. Whereas even on hardcourts I think it's harder to hit winners as most players tend to move better and retrieve on that surface.

I can't believe some women were playing like that in 95:tape:

The moon ball has bothered me since I first saw it take over the game in the late 80's. I see playing a few moon balls to gain time, and perhaps to frustrate your opponent by breaking up their rhythm, but when used to distraction it pisses off the fan. I figure it would be dangerous to play too many moon balls against someone fast like Serena, who could get to it quickly and knock off a winner.

Great story. If anything to hear about what retired players are doing. For Vicki it's gonna be a great story to tell her grandkids. For Jean too.
With today's type of game I doubt we will see that long of a match happen again.

Good post, but you made a mess of the highlighted part. Hingis hadn't turned 11 at that time, sure she was a child prodigy but to a limit
And surprisingly there are still a few GS duration records that have nothing to do with Chanda Rubin :p
6-3 5-7 29-27 was in fact the score of the longest mixed doubles match ever: Michiel Schapers/Brenda Schultz d. Tom Nijssen/Andrea Temesvari, indeed in Wimbledon 1991, in 4h 13m.

Okay then, so that's one of Rubin I wasn't even aware of :)
The result of that match was "only" 7-6(12) 6-7(6) 13-11 = total of 50 games as you posted (with the wrong score). How long was it in terms of playing time? Being a doubles match on grass, probably not even 3 hours :)
