Pfew! She just gave me heart attack # 1300 or something.

What a fighter she is :worship:

I donít know what was up with her serve in the beginning, but she seemed to clean it up in the second set.

I canít believe how tough that was, I wonder why, was it Maria, was AMG playing so well? Canít wait to hear more about this crazy long match, 3.5 hours!

Happy she won, she clawed her way back from 0-3, and I believe had break point against her for 2-5 or something?

I have to be honest and say I canít believe she pulled this one out of the bag, incredible :yeah:

Well, again an 3 setter and really close. Like Amelie, Masha choked a little bit in the third. :D But she came back after 0:3 and *2:3 15:40, that was simply great. I think that's an important win for her, AMG is no nobody, great clay court player. I hope Masha is fit for tomorrow. :)

Two thrillers (Momo and Masha) on this evening for me, it's hard, really hard.

Lindsay, please win easier.

thanks, maria - you ruined my whole evening! had to follow the livescore, thought you'd won easily in 2, then thought you'd lose, then amazed at 5 in a row, then astounded and depressed at the 2 match points gone begging....phew! but what a champ for seeing it through and I don't care what anyone says - AMG is a specialist claycourt fighter who's in great form right now (look at her doubles results), so masha should be really proud of this.

I don't think so, 4 of her double faults came right at the beginning of the match, and let's not forget that the match lasted 3.5 hours. She didn't hit any double faults at the end of the match.

And I also doubt if she is injured she would have continued to play, especially for such a long match, and then not withdraw from the tournament.

The Russian star proved that Thursday afternoon at Amelia Island Plantation when she defeated Anabel Medina Garrigues 7-6 (3), 5-7, 7-6 (1) in a 3?-hour, third-round match at the Bausch & Lomb Championships.
"In those situations, after three hours or so, it all comes down to heart and how tough you are," Sharapova said. "The forehands or backhands don't mean much after that."
Sharapova, the top seed, hit plenty of both - and so did her opponent.
But Sharapova said she was prepared for that entering the match, because Medina Garrigues is a clay-court player who likes to extend points.
"This is her specialty," Sharapova said of her 15th-seeded opponent's prowess on clay. "She grew up on this stuff. She's very familiar with it. That's why she gets a lot of balls back. That's her game: She makes you play an extra ball."
One key point in the third set lasted 29 strokes before Sharapova forced Medina Garrigues to send a forehand long, breaking her serve and giving Sharapova a 4-3 lead. Medina Garrigues slid on the clay to reach the last ball and lay on the court for a minute after the point, but she didn't appear injured.
Sharapova then held serve to win her fifth consecutive game, rebounding from 3-0 deficit to take a 5-3 lead. But Medina Garrigues fought off two match points to hold serve and broke back to get to 5-all.
"The two match points that she had, she had pretty good first serves, so there's not too much I could do," Sharapova said. "It's the game of tennis. It can change really fast."
The players traded service breaks in the first set before holding in the last few games to force the first-set tiebreaker. Sharapova hit four winners in the tiebreak, including a set-point lob that bounced into Medina Garrigues' backside.
Sharapova said winning the first tiebreak fairly easily didn't necessarily help her confidence entering the third-set tiebreaker.
"I felt like the first tiebreaker was a long time ago. I didn't even remember that we played a tiebreaker," Sharapova said, laughing. "I played a really good game to get it even, and I just thought, 'You have to do the same thing in the tiebreaker. Just play it point by point, see what happens, make her hit another ball.'"
Sharapova did that, winning the first point on Medina Garrigues' serve by forcing her to hit a backhand short - after 19 strokes.
But it was Sharapova's powerful serve that really made the difference in the final tiebreak. She hit a 105-mph ace, and on her final two serves, Medina Garrigues failed to get her return across the net, giving Sharapova five match points.
Sharapova finally ended the marathon match with a forehand cross-court winner.
"There were a lot of ups and downs," Sharapova said. "After being down 3-0, I was glad to be able to find a way to finish it off and win in some way, even if it was not the perfect way."
Sharapova admitted that the long match could affect the right shoulder that plagued her all of last year and prevented her from playing at Key Biscayne this season.
"Once you're in the match, and the adrenaline's going, you're worried about other things," she said. "This is probably a good test for it, so we'll see [Friday]."
Sharapova next plays No. 10 seed Alona Bondarenko, who upset sixth-seeded Dinara Safina in three sets on Thursday. They will meet in the second match on Stadium Court today.

Actually i'm a big fan of Anabel but to say she is better on clay... well, i'm not sure.

You wouldn't doubt that Maria has much more class, Anabel had her chances here, was very close to win but she lacks power in her shots and that cost her a match. I guess Maria didn't play good tennis but still managed to win.

Maria Sharapova, right, of Russia, argues with umpire Kerrilyn Cramer over a line call during her third-round tennis match against Anabel Medina Garrigues, of Spain, at the Bausch & Lomb Championships, Thursday, April 10, 2008, in Amelia Island, Fla. Sharapova won 7-6 (3), 5-7 and 7-6 (1).

Crappy beginning, shitty end of 2nd season/beginning of 3rd, great fight! I was like, wtf is with her serve at the first games. O__O I thought she was going to lose in the 3rd set 3-0 for AMG. ;xx Congrats, Maria and hopefully this will motivate you even more! GL in your Alona match!

Tempting to say that Maria was "lucky" to survive that match, but those kinds of situations are what the players all train for, and yet again, she showed her mental strength. She won't win the French playing like that, but we all know she can play better. Hopefully, she will turn it up soon.

Today I guess we'll get to see whether she's serving at her normal pace and just playing poorly or if there is something physically wrong. I hope it isn't the latter--if she's got a chronic shoulder pain, it'll be off and on until the day she retires, which would be sad. Hopefully she's OK.

OMG what a fight this was. Great match on behalf of both players.
Just glad Masha made it through another round. Go Masha keep improving and I still believe you can make it through. Go get your first clay title.

I' so sad for Anabel  such a great match she pulled of..I^m very proud of her I almost wanna cry...

Well AnaBel should have won it, it would have been one of her biggest victories and for Masha its just an other win again...

Was this match not covered anywhere?:sad::sad::sad:

what a pity, just a blody shame, a great match of Bel and i can't see it, i can't believe it.

Anyone got the match?:sad::confused::sad::confused:

All my credit to AMGThis happens a lot. A nothing match to Maria is a big deal to her opponent. Maria is someone who wants to win every match. That's why she's 20-1 in 2008.

This happens a lot. A nothing match to Maria is a big deal to her opponent. Maria is someone who wants to win every match. That's why she's 20-1 in 2008.

1) Maria has not won a WTA tournament on clay.
She has something to prove.

2) AMG plays well on green clay.
Maria is still not accustomed to it.
AMG took full advantage of that but it doesn't mean this match was a big deal.
She knows she can play against the best on this surface, she doesn't need a win against Maria to know that.

3) I admire Maria's gumsome but this is not a surface you want to play two tournaments on if you're not accustomed to it.
Her ambition to win every match could hurt her chances at Roland Garros and maybe even worse at Wimbledon, which was what happened to Justine in 2005.
