Clay sux - fact. Clay season begins and out come the pushers, the moonballers, the aimless grinding, the 5-to-1 UE to winner ratios, the 150 minute matches between scrubs nobody gives a damn about messing up TV schedules.

So I was thinking - what exactly can we do to entertain ourselves during this particularly dreary part of the tennis season?

Then I remembered. "What will Sharapova do during the clay season?" has been the hot topic among the resident punditry, some claiming she'll be the Rafa Nadal of the WTA, some claiming she's as comically hopeless on clay as Patty Schnyder is on grass. So why not a thread to keep tabs on Sharapova's results on the dirt, now that it seems she's willing to actually play a proper clay schedule?

This thread will be all-inclusive. Fans are welcome to list the victims of the Cow on Ice, h8t0rz are welcome to laugh at her losses. I promise not to badrep and insult the latter. Much.

Let the games begin.

Granted, she wont become a Nadal, but I do think she can make some significant improvements on it with enough effort and experience  And even tho I generally hate clay tennis (esp. when players like Canas or Conchita play it) fact remains that if the cow wants to complete the career GS, which has eluded great players like Lindsay or Martina H, then she has to win in Paris.

Ain't it so? Woman has never hit a winner in her life. I thought Maria would tank, or ret. claiming injury, but she probably felt it would be too shameful to do it when facing such an opponent.

At a crossroads now. If she is to still play Charleston, she has to w/d from AI now. Not much to win and a lot to lose here. The match vs Alona will be another grinding battle, and even if Maria wins she will still be facing Davenport in the SF. Whereas Charleston, now without JH and Venus, is easy points for all those involved.

Lindsay is a 3-time AI champion and an American, she's on a 12-match winning streak in AI, they even gave her a parade there one year, she won't be playing on any court besides the stadium court. Anna should have been moved in that case.

Sorry but you are way out of your depth here.

You CLEARLY have no idea what you are talking about.

Firstly, your point to back up your argument about the four semifinalists at RG 07 being in the top 5 can be turned on its HEAD to in fact mean nothing; as the four semifinalists for the ATP are the top 4.

Furthermore, Rafael Nadal is an incredible talent. And should've won Wimbledon last year. And might well do so this year. And, if it were not for the coincidence that R.Federer is so utterly dominant in this era, would've been #1 and had even more success.

Saying he only wins multiple RG is absolutely EMBARASSING. It is such an insult to him. And comes from somebody who only watches the ATP from the absolute outside; that statement in itself highlights your complete and utter ignorance of men's tennis.

Stick to what you know. That was just a pathetic comment.

I probably wouldn't watch tennis if clay surface wasn't there. Tennis would be soo different and boring without it. We would see 6.6 and taller "basketball players" moving on the court like an elephant and bashing the ball mindlessly, producing countless aces, serve-volley games and no rallies longer that 3-4 hits at all. Clay gives chances to shorter players, keeps the importance to learn to volley, and brings a lot of drama into the game. I remember Lendl vs McEnroe, Courier vs Agassi, Agassi vs Medvedev, Graf vs Sanchez-Vicario or Pierce finally winning her slam. All those great memories. :)

Nadal is such a good player on all surfaces, he hasn't found his feet in the hardcourt majors but I tell you something; before the Final he played some AMAZING hardcourt tennis in Miami. I watched him take apart Blake and Berdych; two players he has struggled with in the past. He is ever-improving and he could quite easily have a Wimbledon title himself by now. In the words of Roger Federer:

A few things:
I think this thread is pretty funny, tracking the results of the race leader on her least favorite surface, a player who goes so far as to call HERSELF a "cow on ice". Sharapova is far froma bad claycourter, nowhere near the worst even in the top10.

And why is goldenlox being mauled in this thread? The women's game and men's game is SO different. Women can play hardcourt tennis on a claycourt and win. Pierce, Majoli, Serena, Capriati-- and that's just RG winners within the last decade. On the men's side, Nadal can win on clay for months but loses at almost every other event he plays-- statistically. It's not even close. It just so happens that the top4 men's players also happen to be good claycourters-- maybe this is because players feel more pressure to be versatile since Federer has dominated. This has NEVER been the case before in the men's game. Sampras was a nonissue on clay year after year, and he was #1.

People want to compare Sharapova on clay to say, Andy Roddick. I think that's unfair. She fights her heart out, wants it, maybe even believes it-- that she can win. Also, Sharapova's competition is very different. There are a lot more Anabel Medina Gariggueses on the ATP. Many, many, many more.

:rolls:

Ohmygod.

Do you even follow men's tennis?

It it just so awful to hear people say these things; you just lose all credibility in my mind.

Nadal is soooooooo much more than a claycourt player. And to say anything less than that is simply ignorant. Stick with WTA.:rolleyes:

I'm fine. I enjoy the humor.
Although Nadal fans are pretty crazy.
I didn't realize Nadal's effort on Sunday against Davydenko was such a great performance. Cheers for Nadal!

What?!

Try reading and comprehending. Nobody is saying Nadal's performance against Davydenko was great. Just like nobody is saying Federer, the supposed GOAT, played well against MARDY FISH.

People have off days. The best can have off days.

For someone like Nadal, on a hard court, if he goes up against someone with a huge serve and huge game IF that person plays (and I am not saying Davydenko falls under this category) to the pretty much the top of their game then sometimes there is just very little you can do.

As Federer saw against Andy Roddick. Now who is going to say Roddick is a better hardcourt player than Federer? Nobody.

But if Roddick did the same to Nadal; then people like you and fabalalavasodzofsozozo would undoubtedly jump in and start calling him nothing but a player who wins "multiple RG" and put him in lists with Bruguera (sp). Which is just so DEMEANING to a player of Nadal's stature.

As I said with the Federer quote; it proves that in his mind Nadal is ready to win multiple Wimbledon's so that alone means he is so much more than just a claycourter.

Ignorant people are among the most annoying people and I dare say that you, goldenlox, right now are the epitome of ignorance on this subject.

And yes, I know Nadal is amazing on all surfaces, but his play on other surfaces in NOWHERE NEAR AS GOOD AS HIS PLAY ON CLAY.

How many people have to point that out to you? He wins almost every event he plays on clay (All but one in the last few years, right?)

He's 0-6 on non clay events this year.
In 2007, he only won Indian wells (where he only beat 1 top 10 player-- Roddick) and Stuttgart, where he didnt beat a single top 20 player.
In 2006, he only won Dubai off the clay.

He is the best claycourt player of all time.

Therefore, that is expected. I accept that he is much better on clay than other surfaces. Federer is much better on grass than other surfaces.

And the quote of your's that I bolded is where you're wrong.

If you look at goldenlox's original quote that I took issue with he gave Nadal as an example of a player who does NOTHING but wins "multiple RG"; now that does say he is incompetent on grass and hard. Whereas, for me, he is 2nd best player on grass and 3rd best player on hard.

Don't waste your time with that idiot.
Sharapova went further at RG than the USO in 2007 and 2004.
She's won the same amount of matches at both RG and the USO the last 4 years.

Nadal is a classic example of a multiple RG winner who can't even get to the big matches at the USO. He's bounced before he gets to Roddick, Fed or Djoke

When I read the title of this thread I thought someone is taking pot shots at Lindsay's lack of clay prowess but I like it about Maria Scremapova. After today's match I really like Lindsay's chances of beating her on clay if they play in semi finals. I fully admit Lindsay a clay hack too but it will be an interesting match if they play as you could say it's a surface where they are both as bad as each other on. :)

I agree with you that the clay season is the most boring of the whole. I won't even watch Lindsay on clay and it a really long stretch for me to say that too.

We would see 6.6 and taller "basketball players" moving on the court like an elephant and bashing the ball mindlessly, producing countless aces, serve-volley games and no rallies longer that 3-4 hits at all.

:hearts:

Clay gives chances to shorter players, keeps the importance to learn to volley, and brings a lot of drama into the game.

Most claycourters can't volley to save their lives.

I think she will do well this season. She hasn't done too well in Amelia Island yet but she's still in the tournament and has a great chance at winning her first clay title. If she does win, she will have a lot of confidence about the rest of the season.

This time last year she was nursing a sore shoulder but still managed a SF at RG. This practice wil do her good.

She'll probably play Amelia Island, Berlin and Rome. I don't expect her to win either of the red clay tournaments.

And where's your evidence that he doesn't lose nearly every other event off of clay that he plays? he's only won 3 nonclay titles in 08,07,and 06.

Ok...just a few words for you to answer the first question:

WIN STREAK. AGE.

Now, read into them. I don't think I need to expand. Realise what they entail. Then you can accept why it is not a sweeping statement to regard Nadal in such a manner. In fact, most commentators and pundits have already said the same thing.

Next.

So you are essentially saying: "Nadal doesn't win the majority of tournaments he plays outside of clay."

AND?! Why should he? That says nothing about him. Neither does Djokovic. Neither has Federer this year. Nobody is right now.

That is just an absolute NOTHING point.

As I have said, yes CLAY IS UNDOUBTEDLY HIS BEST SURFACE; but he is the 3rd best hardcourt player and the 2nd best grasscourt player.

While goldenlox dismissed him as nothing but a RG winner. Which is ludicrous. And that was my whole argument. Are you really going to disagree with that? No. Good.

It's easy to say Sveta is better on clay, but if they meet at RG, there's no guarantee that Sveta wins that match.
Maria's edge is mental toughness. She is tough to keep out of slam semis.
Then she has proven she can win multiple majors.

I saw Maria's last match and she hit about 10 balls that hit the tape at the top of the net and fell back on her side, UE's that shouldn't happen.
Her game can still be effective on clay, she has to make slight adjustments to be steadier. It doesn't have to be this week. It takes more matches on clay.

the point is marias mental strength is nulified by the fact that most players think they have a chance on clay. do you think AMG would have put up such a fight on hardcourts or kept breaking back in the 2nd and 3rd sets.

After that clay-turned-hardcourt bashing festival, I'll be interested to see how Maria does on the red stuff. I don't think it's the type of game that could be played in Berlin or Paris. Still, she's obviously not the clay court hack some think.

Sharapova really was a cow on ice in that third set.

But again, her ability alone will "will" her to victory and beating tough players on clay. But against Venus, Serena, Henin, Ana, Jelena or Sveta -- not gonna happen.

I think Maria has a mental edge over Sveta regardless of who is better on clay, Justine might be bleh all clay season if this injury is anything serious to speak of (or if it just messes with her mind, like most of Serena's injuries). Ana will probably do well, as per usual, Venus? Maria beat her in round 3 last year, I forget the score. Venus isn't playing all that much better than Chakvetadze so I wouldn't be surprised if she lost to Maria.

But great effort by Sharapova today, she can look forward to probably at least another final next month.

Why do you think this? If anything, Sveta is the top player outside of the WS that actually seems to challenge Maria most often. Their h2h is dead even. And on clay, she's simply much more comfortable.

I saw Maria struggle with Alona and Domi last week, and for 2 sets, she looked much better today.
I don't know how red clay will change things, but Maria is obviously motivated, she played 7 matches on green clay, some long matches, in about 10 days.

I agree, she seems really motivated this year.

Congrats Maria, just a few points short, maybe next time.

The players who win RG, Rome and Berlin are the same players who win the USO, IW, and just made the Miami final.
There's no Brugueras and no Nadals, who only win multiple RGs.

Mind you, nadal has also won Wimbledon - a total oposite to the RG.

+ all the Sharapova fans are pretty much entrenched at their Siberian Siren subforum and aren't very active in GM unlike say the Willitards, who have always treated GM as their own backyard. The Mashabators have got their own livescoring threads (into which I wandered by mistake a few days ago), etc.

Sharapova is different nowadays I guess. She actually conceded a couple of points (you know, that wiping off the mark with her foot thing) to AMG in the SF. The Sharapova of 2006-2007 would never have done that.

I think she realizes that her career might well have ended by now. Yet she can still win a few MMs here and there, and is probably surprised at herself that she's still enjoying being a pro tennis player, even if she'll never contend for Slams again.

Maria is 2-0 on clay in 2008, she's won 7 of her last 8 on clay, going back to her FO SF in 2007,
Maria lost her last hardcourt match, to Sveta. Lost her last grass match.
But has a clay winning streak.

Anyway, that was a fairly brief stage in goldenbot's long and distinguished career of trolling at WTAW/TF; a temporary U-turn made necessary by the sadly ephemeral SuperMasha v. 2.0 actually playing vs Israel in the infamous Chamber Pot Tie in early 2008. Before that, Martha was the TF sacred cow goldenbot ragged on the most, mostly on account of the Fed Cup.

There were hundreds (literally hundreds - I'm sure you're all familiar with goldenbot's saturation M.O. by now) of posts by goldie going:

Maria is yet to play Fed Cup for Russia.
She says she wants to, but she never does.
The other players, Nastya, Lena, Sveta, don't want her there. They say she isn't a real Russian and doesn't want to play for Russia.
