View Full Version : Do you grunt when you play tennis?

Just seeing if there is any recreational players like me who grunt...

Last year i grunted like LLW which was kinda embarrassing and ineffective because i would try to be too aggressive. Then i went for a long time without grunting.

My last couple of times playing, i've been grunting like Dokic(out of nowhere) which is kinda embarrassing for a guy.:o I've been playing better though so i guess whatever works.

I only grunt on the big/long points... it's quite natural to do so.
I don't grunt throughout a match on every point though, I just try to keep my breathing in check and sometimes that results in grunting. (and I'm a guy too)

No....... but I have a really annoying habit of making some noises :help: when I make an error, especially when it was an easy shot and I really wanted that point!!

I have to teach myself to stfu when I miss. :o

i grunt nearly as loud as your mum when we're having sex...it's perfectly normal, it shows you are putting effort into your shots!

...............

it shows you are putting effort into your shots!

1. Could be showing you are putting effort into your shots, as you say.
2. Could be done without putting effort into shots.
3. Could be putting effort into shots but not grunting.

:spit::haha:

I only ever really grunt when hitting a really hard flat serve, or when stretching for a wide ball. It's involuntary really. When I actually think about grunting while playing, it just makes me go for too much and I usually make an error

by the way, i apologize for my previous comment...but come on, the temptation was too much for me to resist...it just had to be said

I've only played tennis twice, but I grunt when I serve. I think it's because I routinely go for broke on my serve :o

Sometimes, but it's not really that loud. And only when I'm tired and need to put a lot of effort into shots.

Yes. I basically make the same sounds like I do in bed lol. Not on purpose though. It's just that I'm not fit enough.

Maria Croft
Apr 9th, 2008, 05:27 PM
Sometimes, but just a little and it's not loud, but it's fun grunting like Maria so when I want to have a good laugh I do that  :help:

Only when I serve or I am put under pressure by a deep ball or one that I have to run for.

Apr 9th, 2008, 05:38 PM
Yeah me too when I'm hitting a shot on the run, usually out wide. Also when I want to put the ball away. My grunts are quite low.

I usually imitate Ivanovic's grunt :D

Monaco 84
Apr 9th, 2008, 06:10 PM
I like Ivanovic quiet grunts and she also has this little tiny grunt just before she hits the shot.
I love it, I do it too now and play better from the baseline and it just gave me a great rhytm. I also dont get so tired during long rally, I'm totaly in the zone.

Thank you Ana :) :smooch:

I'd say 85% of the time I don't grunt, but if it's a long point, or I'm doing a lot of running, or I'm exhausted, I'll grunt. I make "aye, yai, yai" noises when I miss, and sometimes yell at myself and make retarded faces.

I'm pretty entertaining to watch

my strokes are pretty looking too

Apr 9th, 2008, 07:45 PM
Yep. Quitely with normal shots, and a little more with wide, more difficult shots. And yes, I think it comes from watching too much tennis. I didn't used to do this growing up. Weird as that sounds.

ha i know wen i got a winner cos my grunt is LOUD and i think it's also quite tactical if u grunt with intent and conviction, they know your in control

Seriously one of the reason, is that I'm gay and Serena is my idol - So I look up to her as an inspiration to play power-tennis, and in doing so I feel I can play her game-style, if you know what I mean. F.Y.I one of the guy I know, play with both hands, and grunt like you-know-who (Seles)!

I don't really like grunters much.. at least one's who are really loud :(

I rarely grunt, probably because I don't play competitively anymore and don't need to exert energy. If I'm changing my game up and being aggressive, I'll grunt some :) but not too much

Btw, I'm a guy

Apr 9th, 2008, 09:51 PM
You know what.

I just played tennis a few hours ago and i don't think i grunt

I mean i used to grunt for my backhand(when it wasn't very good) but i play better quiet!

I bet my hitting partner would think differently

I don't grunt. I exhale a little bit on contact when I'm hitting hard but it's not very audible.

I played a woman who grunted loudly, even during the match warmup :(
It was extremely disturbing for me and she didn't even hit the ball hard. That was the saddest part.
Actually no, the saddest part was I lost the match :o

This was years ago though. My tennis skills have vastly improved.
