Former Austrian tennis player Daniela Klemenschits dies of cancer at age 25

THE ASSOCIATED PRESSWed Apr 9, 12:19 PM ET

SALZBURG, Austria - Former Austrian doubles player Daniela Klemenschits died early Wednesday after a battle with cancer, the country's tennis federation said. She was 25.
Klemenschits teamed up with twin sister Sandra to play doubles on the WTA Tour and the ITF women's circuit until 2006.
Both sisters were diagnosed with a rare form of abdominal cancer in January last year, forcing them to retire from the sport.
Daniela had to have several tumours removed and required expensive medical care, causing many tennis players on the ATP and WTA tours to make donations and rally for support.
Roger Federer, Marat Safin, Justine Henin, Amelie Mauresmo and Martina Hingis and others donated items for an online auction in June to raise funds for Klemenschits' treatment.
The Klemenschits sisters won 20 titles on the ITF circuit and, although they failed to win a WTA Tour event, entered the top 100 of the WTA doubles ranking in 2005.

Klemenschits Passes Away

SALZBURG, Austria - It was a sad day for the tennis world on Wednesday, as Daniela Klemenschits - who, along with twin sister Sandra Klemenschits, was diagnosed with a rare form of abdominal stomach cancer last January - passed away.
Last summer, the Klemenschits sisters made a plea for financial help as their treatment was becoming more and more expensive. The tennis world came together, beginning with ATP and Sony Ericsson WTA Tour stars like Justine Henin, Roger Federer, Amélie Mauresmo, Marat Safin, Martina Hingis, Ana Ivanovic and Daniela Hantuchova, Maria Sharapova, Rafael Nadal and Steffi Graf donating items for an auction on sonyericssonwtatour.com that raised $10,000. Players donated $50,000 out of their pockets and the Tour matched the auction earnings for a total of $70,000.
Unfortunately, the illness proved too much for 25-year-old Daniela, whose cancer was more advanced than Sandra's. On Wednesday night in Amelia Island, there was a moment of silence in memoriam prior to the night match between Lindsay Davenport and Jill Craybas.
The Klemenschits sisters are perhaps best-known for reaching the Istanbul final in 2005 and the Stockholm and Budapest semifinals later that year; they were an impressive force on the ITF Women's Circuit as well, winning 20 titles together

very sad to hear.. also very dissapointed that the players only donated $50K total. If they each at give $50K each it wouldn't be so bad but $50K combined?

Saying that someone lost the battle against cancer is a very gentle, euphemistic way of saying that this person passed away because of cancer  I don't see what's wrong here.

It`s too sad to be true:sad:. There are no words for it.

But thanks at this place to Barbara Schett and Kurt Waltl, who took care of the twins in the best way they could.
Unfortunately it was too late for Dani; but Sandra seems to be on the way to recovery.
All the best for her now, now that has to fight against her disease and has to deal with the death of her beloved sister too. Unimaginable hard time for her, as well as for her family and friends...

Wish them much strenght and courage now to come through this!

If you don`t have other thoughts and feelings by reading that a 25 year old woman died of cancer and her twin-sister suffers of the same cancer - sorry i think THAT is insensitive!!

Sandra plays Tennis again

http://heuteonline.at/images/1504_sport_krebs_gepa_big.jpg
