:bounce: Nice win, Maria! A few troubles on serve though in the second... but looks like she's not that bad on clay after all.;)

Keep it up! :hearts:

19-1 in 2008, with 11 of those wins giving up 4 games or less.
Should have won 61 62.

Good win for Maria. :clap2: She looked impressive in the first set, but had some troubles at times in the second set. Still she did a good job of closing it out after being broken. So it was a nice easy win as expected for Maria. :clap2:

 :woohoo:

Pova :weirdo: Great up until 6-1 5-2.
This match should have given her 2 trips to the bakery...
She'll need to step if up if she wants her first clay win.
But this was a good start to the tournament, and especially for a first match on a different surface.

AMG is up next, right? Should be pretty straight forward for Maria.

I don't know about straight-forward, but she should win. ;)

Good start for Masha, I want her to play Dinara in the quarterfinals.

Well,

19-1 for the season.

Clay streak = 1.

Well done to Pova. Serving was good: 75-80-80 the 1st set, 73-63-44 in the second.

Strycova put up a fight in the second set. Kudos to her! She even got a break!

I'm not sure if I like the lining on her shirt, perhaps kind of tacky, but that's by far my second favorite Pova outfit. (Not that that's saying much, but I do like this outfit.)

Much better than earlier in the year.

Her skirt looks huge and I don't think I like the ruffles in the top. Thanks for the pic though.

Well, that would be nice, but it seems difficult. She's got 615 points to MAKE UP on her competition to get to #2 (Ana is that many points ahead). Ana, Jelena, and Kuz are all great claycourt players.

Ana's defending 615, Kuz is defending 725, and Jelena is defending 1165. Justine is only defending 470! She could actually add to her huge lead!

So basically with all clay 2007 points off, Sharapova is about even with Ana, ahead of Kuz by 110 points, and ahead of Jelena by a lot (I don't want to figure how many points because she has so many "next best" results).

If Maria wins in Amelia Island, she'll be in a really good position for #2 before RG.

If Maria stays healthy, she should be #1 and a holding a Wimbledon tray in early July.

On the court, Sharapova's game gained the same such approval from fans and her opponent, as the world's fifth-ranked player overwhelmed Barbora Zahlavova Strycova 6-1, 6-3 on Stadium Court at Amelia Island Plantation.
"It was great," Sharapova said when asked for her first impressions of the venue. "I love the stadium. I love how quaint everything is. The trees around the stadium - I don't think any of the players get to see much of that during the year, and it's kind of homey. It's only a 31/2-hour drive from my house in Sarasota, so it kind of feels like a backyard in a way.
"All the fans are kind of close to you. Usually, the stadiums that we play in are huge and a lot bigger than this."
Sharapova's game was as picturesque as the setting in which she played.
After each player held their opening service, Sharapova won five games in a row, closing the first set with a picture-perfect drop shot. It caught Zahlavova Strycova by surprise as Sharapova had sent blistering cross-court forehands past her up to that point.
Zahlavova Strycova held her opening two serves of the second set, but Sharapova was too strong, too accurate and simply too good. She won four games in a row to take a 5-2 lead and closed the second-round match with another smashing forehand that her Czech opponent couldn't answer.
Sharapova, the tournament's top seed, received a first-round bye. It was her first clay-court match of the season, but it was hard to tell with her effective style of play.
"Coming into the match, you really don't know what to expect because you know your opponent has already had a few matches on clay, and this is your first match," Sharapova said. "The most important thing today was just try to get used to the atmosphere on the court and also the opponent. I haven't played her since the junior days.
"There are obviously a lot of things that, hopefully, I will be improving from this match, but it was a good start."
Sharapova's dominance left Zahlavova Strycova yelling at herself.
The match frustrated Zahlavova Strycova so much that she smashed her racket to the ground after Sharapova took a 4-2 lead on a net-cord in the second set.
The 6-foot-2 Russian star skipped the previous tournament at Key Biscayne, a key factor for her first appearance at Amelia Island.
"I didn't play in Miami, so I had a little bit more time on my hands than I've had in the previous years," Sharapova said. "After playing Indian Wells and Miami back-to-back, it's pretty tough to have a two- or three-day turnaround and come and play a clay-court event."

InsideOut.

Yeah but Ana didn't play in Rome last year. She can earn points there. All in all it will be very tight.

TITLE?!? Goodness, lets get through the AMG test first! AMG is a solid clay court player and Pova will have to step it up some to do well. After that the QF's...

Anabel is ranked #29 and has a career to date winning match record of .6100 - mostly wins on clay! This will be a good thest for Pova.

It's nice the way this tournament is working out for Pova. Getting today off after her first match allows time for more fine tuning of her clay court game. This is certainly very favorable for her.

ANM got 6 games when they played in 2005 on red clay. back then maria never used top spin, slice, drop shots...AMG should be no problem

AMG is more of a challenge than Barbora.
AMG lost to Ivanovic 63 in the 3rd at RG 2007.
But Maria should win in 2.
