Anna is back, and so am I! :) Well at least on a semi-regular basis, hopefully.

It's nice to see that most of the usual suspects are still around. Some newer faces (so to speak) as well. :wavey:

Anna should be well rested. Let's hope she gets a good draw and can do some damage in Miami. :armed:

Great to know that Anna is playing Miami. Personally though I like that she took some time off after Doha (or was it Dubai?). Miami will always be a tough tournament but hopefully she will be refreshed and raring to go. I'm not sure about defending all those points. Anna seemed to be terrible in doing that.

This is a tough field, but with Sharapova's withdrawal, one major potential obstacle has been removed (Anna is 0-6 against her).
Although Anna will eventually have to find a way to beat Maria if she wants to get to the next level.

Not an easy draw for Anna, with a possible 4th Round with Dementieva (or Schiavone), but she avoid Williams sisters and Henin, with Jankovic she has a very good record.

I don't look to deep in the draw, I hope only that Anna can play well.

There is no easy section in this draw. Lena and Fran are 2 of the hottest players now. Whoever Anna plays is the probably the favorite that match.

I'm not so sure Anna can get past Dementieva or Schiavone. Especially Dementieva who is playing much better and seems to be getting back on her winning form.

I sound like such a pessimist on Anna's chances. :tape: :help: It's just that given her 08 results, I don't have much expectations from her. If she gets to the semis again, that's great if not then so be it at least she's playing again. ;)

Cornet and Paszek are both talented up-and-coming young players, but I don't see Anna losing to either one of them unless she plays very poorly. She's 1-0 against Tamira (they played in last year's USO) and has never met Alizé.

Mirza's movement and fitness have improved and she can be dangerous when she keeps the UEs in check, but Anna has never lost to her (4-0 record, all on hard courts).

Schiavone or Dementieva would definitely pose a challenge (although I'm hoping Cibulkova can find a way to beat Schiavone ).

No walk in the park here, but with Sharapova MIA and Henin and both Williams sisters in the other half, I still think it's a pretty decent draw. Anna should be fresh physically. I just hope she comes in with some confidence and a positive attitude.

No offense to Mirza and her fans but if Anna loses to her then I'll know that Anna is having some serious problems with her game. Anna may be a bit too inconsistent lately but I can't see her losing to someone who can spray balls all over the place.

Mirza has withdrawn from the tournament. So Anna's 3rd-round opponent (assuming she gets there) will be Vandeweghe, Lisicki or Koryttseva. My money's on Lisicki, who has wins over Davenport and Safina.

Anna is usually very good at beating players she's supposed to beat (well, this year not so much ). Anything less than a R16 spot would be very disappointing.

On court temper tantrums aside, methinks Anna is a pretty nice girl off court. Lucky you! :)

Anna always have problems with her serve. It's just too flat and the ball toss is low so timing has to be really good to get that ball above the net.

As for Paszek, in their US Open match Paszek did not play her best hence the easy win for Anna. I think this time it will be more difficult for Anna to win. The good thing is that Paszek also has a weak serve and her movement is still average so Anna can exploit that.

I haven't seen Anna play all that much this year, but I've noticed she's been hitting more aces AND more DFs than usual. Sign that she's making adjustments to her technique, or simply taking more chances?
Paszek doesn't look particularly fit right now. Anna should make her run. A lot.

I'm inclined to think that she's just taking more chances. Although I believed she tweaked her service motion last summer when she worked with Robert Lansdorp.

Anna should definitely move Paszek around. She did it in their US Open match and I think it's one of Anna's strength when playing against players ranked below her. She can move the ball quite well around the court and more often than not she can anticipate where they'll return every shot.

As expected by most of us in here, Anna won! :)

Very good stat in Anna's return of serve, 80% (8/10) breakpoint conversion. Anna totally killed Paszek's first (33%) and second serves (28%). Granted that Paszek is no serving demon but I'd still take it as a good sign that Anna did not suck in this match unlike how she did in her other matches this year. :tape: ;)

Plus 7 aces and 9 double faults ain't so bad. Anna also needs to serve well against Lisicki. I haven't seen this girl play but she has beaten players with a big serve (Lindsay and Dinara) so I think Anna's serve delivery won't overwhelm her. If Anna plays her normal game, she'll win. Lisicki may have beaten a couple of good players but she had also lost to some sub par competition this year.

Anna playing last match on Stadium. There's a lot of matches scheduled before hers and if the men's matches go the distance then Anna is in for a long wait and a long night. :scared:

Anna! :D :yeah:

Serving trend continues (high number of aces/DFs), but great stats on return against an admittedly weak server.
According to the tournament website, Anna hit 31 winners and 21 UE (+10). Even though these stats are probably not entirely accurate, they are an indication that Anna played a pretty solid match overall.

I've read Jankovic played in an almost empty stadium yesterday night. Apparently, most people left after the Federer match. Shame on them. I wouldn't be surprised if the same thing happens tonight. It's pretty amazing that they put Anna in the stadium (in an evening match, no less), Serena Williams in the Grandstand and Henin and Venus on Court 1. Anna is not exactly a household name among so-called casual fans.

By the way, there is the possibility of rain all day today in Miami. Having spent a good deal of time there, it's very common to get bursts of 15-30 minute rain and even thunder showers followed by prolonged periods of sun. So, the day won't be a total washout, but if anyone is going to get bumped to tomorrow, it would be Anna (and whoever else is scheduled last).

I don't know how Lisicki plays. All I know is she's beaten Safina and Davenport this year and is storming up the rankings. Anna should win but she seems to be shaky on her own service games, possibly because she's going all or nothing with her serve. Too many breaks of serve in her last match.

I'm not too worried about Anna getting shaky on her serve. This is women's tennis. Breaks of serve is the norm and Anna is very good in breaking serve. She just needs to be steady especially on her ground strokes. She tends to go for too much even when she's having a bad day, hence the ridiculous amount of unforced errors.

I like your idea GL of Anna getting far, maybe defend her semis points. I don't want to look too ahead but now that Ivanovic is out, all the potential players Anna will meet are beatable if Anna's having a good day. Still she needs to get past Lisicki first.

Anna's schedule today sucks. Gonzales hasn't even started his match. Anna will be lucky if she gets to play before 12midnight. I hope the organizers grow a heart and move her match to tomorrow morning but I doubt it. :(

Anna's actually playing at this ungodly hour and not doing well at all. She's down 7-5, 1-3 and has zero aces and ten double faults. Lisicki is, as she did with Davenport, keeping her opponent in the match with DFs (11) but mixing in her share of aces (5).

I guess I was hoping that she will start being consistent again after having rested for a few weeks but those unforced error count says otherwise. :o Maybe I'm just grasping for excuses but I can't help thinking that playing at such a late hour had affected Anna more than Lisicki.

Clay is Anna's worst surface. I'm not going to expect better results from her in the next couple of months.

To quote the great Han Solo, "I ha(d) a bad feeling about this". As soon as I saw that the match had not been moved to another court and was going to start at a ridiculous time, I became worried. For some reason, I was afraid Anna would be more affected by that than her opponent.

I didn't quite expect this train-wreck of a match, though. Horrible serving. DF on set point while leading 5-4 in the 1st set. Only one single game won after that.

Anna apparently gave up in the 2nd. That, for me, is the saddest part. I thought a bit of rest would do her good mentally, that she would come back with fire in her eyes. Apparently, I was wrong.

This is all very depressing.

It's official: Anna is slumping. This is her worst loss since going down in straight sets to Julia Vakulenko (ranked 260) in Warsaw in 2005.

I was wary of Lisicki but I still didn't see Anna losing (or not by this scoreline anyway), regardless of what time her match started. She's got some serious thinking to do about what is wrong with her game or her attitude. That's another 180 points off her ranking and no momentum going into her least favourite part of the season: clay. If she's not careful she'll be out of the Top 10 before she knows what's happened.

If she's not careful she'll be out of the Top 10 before she knows what's happened.

With this serious form crisis, Anna will be very lucky to win one match in Amelia Island and this does not include the bye that she may get on the first round.

As for Chak's ranking, she doesn't have much to defend until the French Open. I sincerely doubt she'll be able to make the QF there again regardless of her draw. Then she has the grass tourney to defend, then not much to defend on Wimbledon. Then the US Open series, this is where I think Anna's ranking will take a serious hit. It's pretty obvious she's no good at all in defending titles so I see early losses again. Of course there's the SF in the US Open. Anna will be lucky to make it to the 3rd Round in NY. :tape: I'm no mathematician but I won't be surprise at all if Anna is out of the Top 10 after the US Open. :o

Warsaw..........70...QF
Berlin..........35...R2
Rome............60...R3

Yes luckily it's relatively low compared to her US hardcourt points. I haven't checked out her clay schedule but it's possible she could pick up some points if she turns it around and wins some matches in Amelia Island.

Anna hasn't really been the same since that horrible semi-final against Kuznetsova at the US Open. The ordeal she went through with her family in December obviously affected her, but her dip in form had already started before that (remember that 6-1 6-0 drubbing against Schnyder in Linz? :tape:).

Yes GL it's a real shame that Anna is doing so bad this year. 2007 was her best year on tour. It's sad to see her lose now to just about anyone who can keep the ball in play. Now that I think about it, her win in Paris doesn't say much since all the players she beat there (Dechy, Mauresmo, Bartoli, Szavay) have been slumping as well.
