View Full Version : First two rounds at IW are weak, weak, weak...

Out of 32 first-round matches, there wasn't a single one in which both players were ranked among the top 50. Out of 32 second-round matches, there will only be two (Kirilenko-Wozniacki and Davenport-Dulko)!

Really, IW should only be seeding 16 players...

They need to reduce the draw size or attract a better field.

The top 32 seeds have byes and don't play in the 1st round. Mathematically this makes 1st round matches between two top 50 players quite improbable. The only way to have such a large draw and have the top players competing in the 1st round is to do away with byes. As for the 2nd round the Australian Open only had 4 matches between top 50 players. What the hell do you expect?

If you don't like it and it doesn't interest you, you don't have to watch.

They should just have a 64-draw with no byes, the start of the event has been

I've personally been happy for Haynes and Voskoboeva this week. But I mean, Miami has the same set up, but there was a third round match between Maria Sharapova and Venus Williams. In a 28-draw in Stuttgart there was a first round between Elena Dementieva and Amelie Mauresmo.

IW looks overall very boring this year though. Only Lindsay is interesting me this week, and even then her draw to the QF is bullshit (a win over Marion would be nice though).

I have never liked 32 seeds. What on earth is the 32nd seed? They're not going to win the tournament. I think all Slams should do back to 16 seeds. That way we would have better 1st-2nd round matches at Slams, and players would care more about their ranking to get into the top 16.

well this is what happens with a weak field....

Weak field.. I think I said earlier just cut the draw. How many players play IW and Miami back to back? These fields have been weak for a while now.

Don't make IW mandatory
Make it one week only and make a one-week break before Miami
Cut the draw in half
Make only 16 seeds

I think these changes would definitely improve the event.

What??? That's totally off. There are only 16 second round matches and all of them have a player in the top 50. The field seems good, stronger than anything since the AO.

Dear pov:

(a) It's a 96-player draw (plus 32 byes). That means there are 64 players in the second round, which means 32 second-round matches, not 16.

(b) Read my original post again. I said matches in which *both* players are in the top 50.

Sincerely,

Pointless thread, there are 32 byes, what else is going to happen?

I like the way Indian Wells and Miami are set up

How are you gonna have both players in the top 50, when the top 32 players got byes?

That doesn't mean it is weak.

I think every player likes 32 seeds and 1-st round byes. Top players get extra day off and others know that they dont have to play against top 30 player in first round. For players who are ranked 50-100 or lower, 25 points and 4650 dollars earned for 1-st round win is very important.

Clearly you're not too good at mathematics. There are 32 Byes,so that is understandably within probability.

Think about this statement for a second. I don't like 32 seeds at any event. However, Indian Wells is the most well attended tournament on the calendar outside of the grand slams, outdrawing even Key Biscayne. If you love the sport of tennis, why would you want to kill off your most attended tournament by fans?

its not like they are all coming to watch the women's event....there is a master's event going on with it which aids in bringing in those numbers...where are the stats showing that it is better attended than miami?? just asking
