“I used to want to be like John McEnroe. I wanted to be like him as a person. That controversy was very exciting for me back then.” - Serena Williams (who was nicknamed ‘Serena Blackenroe Williams” as a kid)

“When Serena was ten she was the only girl in the academy that used to play tag with a closed fist.” -Rick Macci

“Given the same chance as others have had, blacks could dominate tennis in as little as ten to fifteen years just as they have in other sports. If it ever happened it would create problems because their behavior, speech, and dress is just a completely different culture. Tennis is a very conservative game with deep roots grounded in Victorian English moral codes and traditions. Minorities-in particular, inner-city minorities -have cultural norms that are diametrically opposite those of upper-middle- and upper-class white American standards.” -Arthur Ashe (1988)

“When I first started playing tennis I wanted to be the greatest of all time and the closer I got to being called that, the more I realized that’s bullshit because you can’t compare [different] generations. And you can’t compare Suzanne Lenglen to me because if i had been born then and played then, I would have been a different player. But what you can do is take people from their generation and see how much they dominated it. And perhaps you can say Suzanne Lenglen was on par with me. And I’m on par with Steffi Graf.’ - Martina Navratilova

Venus should go straight to the Hall of Fame. She’s going to be there anyway, so why waste time?” -Richard Williams

“I watched Serena and Venus play, and they’re not that good. They’ve been given more attention than me and they don’t know how to play points or how to win....I’m not worried about them.” - Anna K :smash:

“I’m not Venus Williams. I’m not Serena Williams. I’m feminine. I don’t want to look like they do. I’m not masculine like they are.” - Anna K :weirdo:

When asked about naming the all time top five Martina Navratilova replied by saying, “I’m not going to give the order because that’s impossible. Without the [1993] stabbing, Monica Seles would definitely be up there. But Monica doesn’t have the numbers, unfortunately. She had the talent for it, but it was taken away. That being said, I have to say Steffi, Billie Jean [King], Margaret Court, Chris Everet, and Suzanne Lenglen. -Martina Navratilova

Gabriela Sabatini said that Steffi had lost the confidience of being #1. Steffi Graf responded by saying, "How would she know how a number one plays, she's never been number one?"

My favorite quotes about Steffi:

“Steffi Graf is the greatest singles player of all time.” -Billie Jean King

“I think Steffi Graf’s game is perfect. She’s the best all-around player of all-time regardless of surface” - Martina Navratilova

"Steffi was a great legend, an icon and still is . . . We were not like sisters, not best friends. We both had the same goals. But everybody is going to remember her as Steffi Graf, the great." - Martina Hingis

"Steffi had an unbelievable career, did it with a lot of class. She went out and got the job done and made the racket do the talking. I have always looked up to her the way she approached the game. She worked very hard and is a great athlete. But she has nothing to be ashamed of after winning 22 Grand Slams. That is not easy." -Pete Sampras

“In my opinion Steffi is the best lady that has ever played, dominated on every surface.” - Andre Agassi

Some of Hingis's quotes are absolutely priceless. Sure, they're rude and immature but they're hilarious.

"What rivalry? I win all the matches." - on Anna K.
"Next time I have to play mixed doubles, but I have to give someone else a chance to win an event." - after winning the 1997 AO Women's title
"She's old and slow." - on terminating her doubles partner with Novotna :tape:
"Steffi has had some results in the past, but it's a faster, more athletic game now than when she played. She is old now. Her time has passed."

and there's more. Ah, Martina, gotta love her.

My favorite is definitely Spirlea's.

"She thinks she's the fucking Venus Williams!!!"

There's also a great one from Lindsay where she was playing and someone hit an obvious let serve but the the machine was broken and didn't sound, and Lindsay threw a bitch fit and hit the net with her racket. Does anyone have the exact quote of that one?

My favorite Dementieva quotes.

1.) "Just look at Andy Roddick. He has the biggest serve on the men's tour and he's not the No. 1 because other parts of his game are not so good. I think it's more important to have the desire and the other parts of your game."

2.) "I still have I still feel like it was a good result, to be in the quarter. But, you know, I feel like I could do, you know, a little more, and I could go to the semifinals. Yeah, it is disappointing, you know. I'm getting older, and I haven't won a Grand Slam, so that's really what I'm thinking about all the time."

3.) "But by taking like 12 minutes time‑out, I don't think it was a fair play, but she could do it, I mean, by the rules. And she did it. If that's the way, you know ‑‑ if that's the only way she can beat me, I mean, it's up to her."

I don't care how many bad reps I get from Willliams fans ;) I still think Lena's quote about Richard flipping a coin was an oustanding piece of cattiness, all the more enjoyable because it came from such an unexpected source. (In fact, I've often thought that if Lena could just bring a little more of that bitchy attitude on court she'd have won a major by now).

And I know it's not fair to pick on a woman who's trying to speak another langauge, but Myskina's "If she gets up on the right leg she can play" or something like that is pretty funny, too.

MARIA SHARAPOVA: Of? Of what I’m going to buy in the grocery store. I mean, I’m playing a tennis match. It’s pretty easy ‑‑ pretty easy to understand that they’re notes about the match.

Announcer (after Sharapova received the 2007 Australian Open runner-up trophy): And I'm sure you have a few words to say.
Sharapova: A few more than the games I won today.

some more from Maria:)

When asked at the press conference after the 2006 U.S. Open final about her father's illegal signaling and feeding her during the match: I believe, at the end of the day, personally, my life is not about a banana.

Q. 4‑1 in the second, you looked like you pulled something out of your bag. Was that a piece of paper?
MARIA SHARAPOVA: Yeah.
Q. Can I ask what it said?
MARIA SHARAPOVA: Just a reminder.

Chrissy Everet during a Justine wimbledon match. "having a one hand backhand is such a liabilty on grass".

Like honey, you're a tennis player the entire world of tennis knows that a one hand backhand is NOT a liabilty on grass. LMAO. it was ironic.

the one that stands out for me!

Anna K on Lindsay after losing at the 1998 Amelia Island QF
"She doesn't hit that hard, i mean there are players that hit harder like Lucic and her serve is not that big either"

Lindsey's classic response
"She can say whatever she wants, the point is I'M IN THE SEMIS AND SHE'S AT THE HOTEL PACKING"

lindsay    :worship:

Taken from dav_6789's sig -

People who think I'm nice would be surprised to know what goes through my head on the court. I'm a total bitch out there. I get so pissed. Even when I'm playing a friend and she hits a winner I'm like "Who the hell do you think you are?" That's how I think. I can't help it. If you look at my face, I look like the meanest girl out there - Lindsay. :spit:

i cant remember it exactly but chakvetadze said in one of her interviews at the YEC 'all the girls here are tough, maybe even hantuchova'.

also mary saying that getting beat 6-0, 6-0 by capriati was a 'positive experience'

Ah, Martina, gotta love her.:lol::lol::lol::hearts::hearts::hearts::h earts:

at least she doesn't discriminate

MORE Serena:
Serena at the 2007 Aussie Open Final: "You'll pay for that...."
"Vengeance is for God, I'm just here to play tennis." (about avenging her 2002 YEC F loss to Kim Clijsters during the Hopman Cup Final)

I'm not sure of the year, or where she said it but it's a quote from Virginia Wade:

"I'd rather play beautiful tennis and lose, then dull unattractive tennis and win!"

(I guess she bever read Brad Gilberts book - LOL!)

well all i remember was her speach for her runner up spot was about 3 times as long as henins who won, she even managed to thank one of the drivers at the tournament. if you hadn't watched the match you would think mary had won, she stole henins limelight abit there, but henins won it many times (saying that marys won it before).
