Everyone knows now hitting the ball hard and flat is all the rage. But their are women who smother the ball in top spin. Who puts the most on it?

i'd say svetlana

I have to go with Patty, on her forehand at least.

No one IMO beats Sabatini. Her balls sit up soo high, she puts so much spin.

you guys need to look at sabatini.

Top spin is actually really better than flat shots if you hit them deep. Hitting them short which patty and amelie does nowadays will just be smacked by hard hitters.

Martinez when she played

Martinez was a moonballer.
But yeah I have seen Serena play the top spin shots really deep, and she turned them into winners, but I am talking heavy balls. Gabby puts the most spin on it IMO. Lindsay puts a reasonable able on her shots too, so does clijsters.

Amelie. I havent seen her play in a long time, but i remember at Wimbledon way back when, I was shocked at how much top spin she put on the ball....

Huh? Lindsay puts very little topspin on her groundies.

iPatty
Mar 12th, 2008, 12:18 AM
Lindsay has probably the flattest ball on tour.
Sabatini doesn't even play anymore, so she can't be an answer for the question you asked.
Kim didn't put that much spin on the ball either. She didn't brush up on the ball as much as Patty or Amelie.

Amelie Mauresmo, Martina Hingis and Svetlana Kuznetsova

Look at this topspinballs of Martinez. Interesting fact: she used a lot her topspin backhand back then, unlike in the end of her career.

conchita and gaby are the two players that stand out over the last 20 years. spin was the cornerstone of their games. watch conchita reduce dokic to tears with her spins and loopers here http://www.megaupload.com/?d=V5ELMUCP

patty to a similar extent.

amelie doesn't rely on spinning anymore than, say, justine

sveta has heavy topspin, but the shots are more about pace. same as venus and serena. there's topspin, but the opponent is confronted more by the pace than the spin.

Few players actually hit totally flat. Lindsay probably hits the flattest ball of the top players.

Most other players on the tour hit mostly flat but with spin for safety (Sharapova, Serena, Venus, Ivanovic etc.).

Some that hit with more topspin are Kuznetsova, Mauresmo, Henin, Schnyder.

I'd probably say Patty...though some of the South Americans could do it when they want to, like Fernandez (Clarisa)

This coward Serena has become deserves an honorable mention.

Patty is hands down the most -- on her forehand. Her backhand is very flat.

Svetlana has a decent amount. WITHOUT ANY COMMENTS ABOUT HER LOOKS, Svetlana plays like a man. Maybe she trained with them early on in her career? Who knows.

Schiavone puts a fair amount, honorable mention. No one else in the top 30 really deserves a mention.

I really don't understand why Serena is putting more spin on her shots, it's not like she's getting more consistent, she still makes the same amount of errors as when she went for it

starin

Serena's been putting a lot more on. But sadly she's been doing it w/out getting much depth and so her opponents have been teeing off on her balls at times. But lately she's been hitting w/ more pace...and I think more flatter. Venus has been playign with more topsin as well but I don't think she does it that effectively....and she still misses 1/2 the time w/ it. She has much more of a flat game.

But prolly Schnyder..... and from the one match I saw Cornet puts a lot on but she gets really good depth so it's effective.

Lourdes Dominguez Lino

Hingis, on her good days, hits the ball deep with A LOT of spin. It put people off because it didn't give them time to get into position and return a shot. Plus her spins forced, in a way, forced errors as her opponents often misjudged where the ball was bouncing towards.

Mauresmo, Schnyder...

Martinez when she played

Yeah that's true. Her forehand was just loaded with spin and especially on clay her backhand slice would just slide off the court. Very effective use of spin:)

Today it would be mauresmo with those awful short topspin forehands:lol:

I was also about to mentionned Dominguez Lino. I saw her get destroyed to Jackson on hardcourt, her spin was totally useless at that time. I can understand how she managed to do so well on clay though.

Patty and Momo are also good spinners but I don't think someone with as much spin as Gab or Lourdes would manage to get close to the top 5-10 right now.

Kinda funny. Saw Sveta first time about 8 years ago.

First thought was, if she could hit bit flatter sheŽd be a REAL force !

Glad that Conchi Martinez has retired :p

Yeah.

And now that my mind is wondering. Moliks 2nd serve has crazy spin as well.
Mauresmos backhand still wins.

Glad that there are no "Bruguera" -like spin in ladies anymore.
Looks like moonball, bites dust at service line

I don't know if it's necessarily the most topspin, but part of what makes Justine Henin such an exceptional player is her ability to hit topspin while maintaining above average power.

I guess Schnyder or Mauresmo would be my picks in response to the thread question. Honorable mention to Kuznetsova.

Difference between Kuznetsova's and Schnyder's forehand is that Sveta drives through the ball much more than Patty and therefore generates more speed. I didn't see any close-ups of these girls but I think Kuznetsova's grip isn't as extreme as Patty's and that allows her to hit a big topsin forehand while maintaining pace and depth. As someone's already written in this thread Sveta's forehand is much more about pace than topspin comparing to Patty's or Mauresmo's forehand. She plays it almost like male players do if it can be compared.

Mar 12th, 2008, 08:28 PM
Amélie and Patty - my god can Patty hit an incredible amount of topspin off that forehand but because she only really does it off one wing the honour of most topspin goes to Mauresmo who can hit off both wings but especially her backhand

KatChr
Mar 12th, 2008, 09:16 PM
Schiavone for sure! She hits the ball so high especially when comparing to her heigth!!

Conor

Surely Mauresmo (regardless if the ball is in or not lol)
