I'm at Indian Wells.... there is an Internet Cafe here... I'll write a few notes during my days here at the tournament.

Monday
Big Day of qualies - 5matches each on 5 courts. And a lot of players (men and women) practicing. So there is a lot of activity. Men's qualies don't start til tomorrow.

So far I saw practicing: Mauresmo, Sharapova with Kirilinko, Brenda (!!), Li Na with Zheng Jie, Keothavong. Plenty of others I don't recognize.

I got to say hi and good luck to Akgul (!!!) and Elena V.

Only matches I've seen part of is Castano vs. Brodsky. Brodsky is a local player. Last I checked, it was 1 set each, with Castano up a break in the third.

Very hot here, but desert hot, not like hot in Ohio.

I saw the draw ceremony....

The entire area here is really beautiful, but also really developed. Hoping to skip tennis one or two days and get out to see the country around here.

All for now...

Dave.

I really wish I was there in the desert watching the tennis. It's cold and rainy here. :rain:

Thanks for sharing your experiences so far though. :yeah: Hope you get to meet Lindsay some time.

Are you going to watch other matches?

If yes please make a short report about Sesil's match if you have the intention to follow it live. :)

Thanks drake,

I really wish I was there too. This is my first year not going, since I relocated to the east cost. I always felt IW was the best tournament for fans, you can get so up close and personal with the players. I hope you brought a jacket cuz the night sessions can get down right cold and windy.

Be sure to keep us posted and up to date with all the latest happs...

Notes from the afternoon:

I went back to watch Akgul practice. Who was she practicing with? I didn't know. Somebody who spoke Italian. And it seems like Akgul now has a coach. Short little guy. Cute guy though and it was nice to see Akgul get some lessons.

I did feel bad because she is one of the players I came here to see and when I said hi and good luck to her earlier, she seemed really uncomfortable about it. While compared to Elena V. who I don't really follow but know because I saw her play in Cincinnati, was very sweet and looked me right in the eye and smiled and said thanks.

Matches I saw part of:

1. de los Rios def Liu. Not much to say about this one. The players were better matched than the score appears. But not a very interesting match or well played match. de los Rios was wearing the shortest skirt I've ever seen, I mean hitting about the middle of her butt. :tape: I had to clap for her points because nobody else was; the entire crowd was supporting Liu. Saw Liu walking after the match with boyfriend/coach/somebody, and she didn't seem too terribly unhappy.

2. Zalameda vs. Goerges. I came in at 1 set each, and about even in the third. Never seen either of these players before. Zalameda is the most compact player I've ever seen; built kind of like a small Serena. She was really excited to win at I think 7-5 over Goerges in the third. Overall impression is that Zalameda was fired up and working hard, while Goerges just didn't have it so well together. Goerges seemed pissed. :tape: :p Zalameda is I think a local girl and she had a bunch of people that knew here there. I hope she does well.

3. Karatantcheva vs. Rodina. I know most of you like Sesil, and I went to the match prepared to like/support her if I liked what I saw. But what I saw was a very impressive player, not Sesil but Evgeniya Rodina. This was THE MATCH OF THE DAY for me, and Rodina was THE PLAYER OF THE DAY. I was really impressed with her. I'm going to follow her as far as she goes. Only problem she seemed to miss a lot of first serves; other than that she is damn good. Sesil... hmmm... I'd like to see her play again to kind of review my thoughts... but my impression was she tried to muscle her game too much (and her upper body is not actually that strong), and she was more error-prone and sometimes acted like she didn't care or had given up, played quickly, double faults, a bit sloppy. Other than their play, a few observations... I thought Sesil had a bunch of insect tattoos (which I REALY liked in pictures) and I couldn't see a single tattoo. Were they temporary? Or are they all under the clothing line? She had a guy there watching her, who said she was staying with him. He was cheering/coaching her a bit. Not sure what was the deal. He looked to be about 22 or thereabouts. Rodina looks something like a mini Safina. I really liked her tennis.

Just a few other things...

Saw Alona and Kateryna practicing. By that time I had been there a long time and it was so hot, so didn't watch much there.

Saw a player getting a lesson on a slice serve. That was fun to watch. I didn't recognize her, but she was doing it really well.

Saw Brenda practicing!! :p Got to say hi and good luck to her. She may have been surprised somebody knew her. But I'm too shy to talk to any player so I didn't explain how I know her and what a big fan club she has. :p She is actually quite pretty in person.

Saw Sania walking by. Seemed kind of uptight/stressed.

And a little funny thing happened. I saw some people walking and one of them had a great looking bowl of fresh cut fruit. It looked so good, pineapple, blueberries, etc. And it was really big. After they passed I thought I'm gonna ask where they got that and go get one, so I said, excuse me, where did you get that fruit? It happened kind of quickly and next thing I know the person turns around and it is Eleni, and she said she got it from the players' lounge, and I was so surprised it was her (I guess I was just staring at the fruit and not her so much when she first walked by) :p but the main thing I want to say is that she is absolutely drop dead gorgeous. I said are you Eleni, she said yes and I wished her good luck, she seemed nice and friendly but I'm (so far) not good at talking to players beyond a quick hi (maybe somebody can advise me :p ). I was awe-struck at how beautiful she is. OMG.

I took pictures but they are mostly pretty bad - blurry or too far away or just action bad shots. I'll upload/post a few of them sometime this week.

drake3781
Mar 11th, 2008, 05:53 AM
One more thing. Vania King, Angela Haynes, and Ahsha Rolle were "doing" the draw ceremony. They were really nice with the fans and had a lot of picture taken and signed autographs, etc. Ahsha was dressed up; the other two were wearing tennis clothes.

Later I saw Ahsha and if I remember correctly Vania practicing. This is weird and could be wrong but it seemed like Ahsha's coach had one of those telephone things in his ear and was talking to Ahsha on it, even though he was like 5 feet away. I didn't see one in her ear where she had the mouth part, but maybe she had the ear piece. (Or maybe he was talking to somebody else, but why would he do that on the court?) Is a new thing in tennis coaching? Never seen that before.

Don't think that is gonna happen. So much WTA going on - matches and practice - and I really don't follow the men's tour (nor ever heard of this person :tape: ). But... if I walk past that match, I'll stop and watch and take a pic for you. :p

Elena D is not playing here.

Sania - sad to say - is not having a lot of fun on tour like some of the other players. Seems like work and business, and she is under a lot of stress. This just from her walking by me :p, but I've been thinking about it ever since.

Was Amber Playing badly????

Nothing special. I barely remember. That match was unremarkable.

Amelie, I would say, and Maria S - you can just feel the "elite" oozing from the elite level players. Seriously, it is visceral to me. Even seeing them from behind, before I know who they are, there is a feeling that bounces from these two that says they are something special.

I think Shuai is not here yet. Maybe tomorrow? Nor did I see Zi or Tiantian today.

Na and Jie had a nice practice. Jie struggling a lot with her serve. :help: . Na looking as slim as I've ever seen her and prettier too.

A little news from today, Tuesday. Back at the little internet cafe. (It is air conditioned. :p )

I wanted to watch two matches especially; players I saw yesterday. One was Rodina, playing de los Rios today. I was really impressed with Rodina yesterday and she had a good win today over Rossanna. The second was Riza Zalamada, who played Kudryavtseva today. I saw the final set of that match, and have to say I was hoping Zalameda could win it. She served for the set but was broken, and also found herself up 4-0 in the tiebreaker, but still didn't pull out a win. It was not a choke; just a tough match.

Also saw a bit of Wozniack vs. Lisicki.

Practicing today:
Li Na with Zvonareva.
Zheng Jie with maybe it was Sun or a Chinese player who looks like a mini Sun.
Franny with ??
Meng Yuan with Yaroslava Shvedova. (I had to ask her coach who she is, but glad I did.)

Nothing really exciting. Hot here. Lots of people, even for qualifying.

Maret Ani, like others have said.

If Amanmuradova's new coach is indeed Italian, it would make sense, since Ani speaks Italian, and has been training in Italy, or at least with Italian coaches, for some years now.

I remember Ani saying some rather nasty stuff to Pennetta in Italian over here at the Estoril Open back in '06.

anything about Nicole Vaidisova? :)

drake3781
Mar 12th, 2008, 04:45 PM
Hi. I"m going to be leaving soon to head back there for Round 1.

A few replies.

Haven't seen Vaidisova or Ivanovic yet.

Only Italian I've seen is Franny. She looked really cool getting ready to practice. I like her demeanor a lot.

Ani and her coach were speaking Italian. I didn't hear if Akgul and her coach were in Italian or something else. They didn't talk much that I could hear; he only fed her balls and showed her something with the racquet once.

I have to say: Add Jelena Jankovic to that list of "elite" players. She looks amazing physically and has that air about her that sets her apart from the others.

I know what you mean about Maria S's outfit, too. She looked great in it, and I hate her "dress up" style too.

====================

I would really like to talk about Rodina with somebody. She is a pleasure to watch and I'm really excited to have "found" her. Anybody know much about her or follow her career?

1. de los Rios def Liu.

That guy you saw Amber with was probably Michael Chang (French Open winner). He was coaching her last week in the Las Vegas ITF event. I sat near him in the bleachers not knowing who he was, until I noticed lots of people asking him for his autograph.

 I don't think it was Michael Chang. I think I would have noticed. You know, he coached Shuai last year. :p
He would wear all white, every day.
Hardly anybody recognized him, when I saw him with Shuai, unless somebody pointed him out.
I think he did a really good job helping Shuai last year.

Notes from Wednesday (Round 1)

This was a very long day at the tournament. So long, and hot, and with three days in a row now, I will probably take tomorrow "off". Need to do some work, and maybe some sightseeing.

I arrived about one hour after matches started, and found Zheng's match already finished! Saw the score later, and Zheng had beat Loit 60 61, so I guess that went very quickly. :tape:

So then I went to catch what I could of Marta's match, against Pironkova. I was sad to see Marta had lost the first set, and was down in the second as well. But the worst news was that Marta played really badly. Just hitting bad errors and I think double faulting. I was  that she was playing like that. After the match she walked up the path texting on her blackberry.
I bet Marta is gonna retire soon.

(More to come...........)

More from Wednesday:

After Marta's match, I went around to the practice courts. I took a lot of pictures of players, even if I didn't know them, because I've had so many requests. I'll post those next.

Then I saw my lovely Shuai step out onto the court. I haven't seen her in a year. So nice to see her again. :hearts:

She had a male hitting partner and a coach. Wasn't practicing with another player. I noticed the hitting partner with her at her match later in the day, so maybe he is traveling with them, but probably not. He seemed to be really impressed with her play, giving her the "racquet-clap" and the "head nod" quite a bit on her shots. :p Her coach asked the hitting partner to change his bachkand to slice, which was perfect because Shuai got a ton of those from Ula in her match later.

I sat and watched her entire practice (30 minutes).

Regarding requests for other players's pictures, or for info about how they were playing.... I'm posting the pics I have. If I took a few of a player, I'll post one or two, not all, but the ones I post are the best. If I write something about how they played, there you have it, otherwise I didn't notice or don't have the skills to notice. I'm not a super player myself, I play a lot but am "still learning", so I don't write like a professional about tennis. And you have to remember I've seen so many players it is honestly hard to keep everything straight. Not to mention the heat. :p

After watching Shuai's practice, I went to see Akgul's match against Rodionova. After the match I talked to Akgul's coach. He is super nice and super cute. A French guy; I feel bad because I didn't ask his name. :o :o

He has been with her for longer than I thought - since at least Cincinnati last year and probably months before that. It makes sense because she really developed her game - learned how to play tennis, I would say - between Cincinnati 2006 and Cincinnati 2007.

I explained how I had followed her career for several years, including seeing her in Cincinnati on two different years and attending just to see her matches last summer, and about how I watch her results and her prizemoney/ranking points because I know that is so important for her to be able to continue. He said he is helping her with that.

I asked him to please make sure Akgul knows that she has many fans who care about her and her success. I may have a chance to talk to her in the next few days; in which case I have an interview prepared (well, not prepared yet, but plan to get it ready).

This was all a quick conversation, but it was really heartwarming to talk to another from the small group of people who know and support this "unknown" player. This is a big part of why I read about and follow the tour - not for famous, rich, beautiful, accomplished players, but for those with interesting stories who are struggling to make something of their talent and heart. :inlove:

Quick stop at the Voracova-Arvidsson match.

Simple match report is that Voracova (who was winning at the time) was playing the clever, quick, efficient game, while Arvidsson was taking the longer route with the baseline rally approach, which apparently served her better in the end as it went to three sets and she prevailed. I only saw a few games near the end of the first set.

Our girls high school team is wearing a variation of that this year. Our school color is maroon so it worked out because the big brands never make their main designs maroon. They always save maroon for the boring "team" outfits. Anyways, the girls team has maroon tops, white skirts with maroon at the bottom, and then some of that pretty pink around it.

It's one of the best outfits in a while. Good job adidas :yeah:

Next match was Yan Zi vs. Urszula Radwanska.

Zi lost the first three games, didn't seem worried, nor did I because I know how she will fight back from behind like nobody else on tour.

Then she called the trainer, and had a medical timeout while her thigh was wrapped.

It really felt like she was just warming up the first set (lost it 2-6), and she then won a long string of games to bring her all the way into the third and up a break. Zi can track down almost any ball and send it back low and sharply hit. People call some of the Chinese players "Chinese Robots" and Zi really is a cute little robot tennis player, almost perfectly programmed, but also with a fun and happy spirit. :D

Urszula had a medical timeout in there also, to have her ankle wrapped. Neither player was apparently bothered by these injuries during play.

In the third set, Urszula was extremely frustrated, crying, shrieking, and she even got a code violation for Obscenity. At one point she was so mad at Zi for sending her side to side, backhand and forehand, she made motions with her racquet showing us how she felt. I feel badly seeing a player cry, but it was funny watching Zi watching Urszula's behavior (like she had never seen this type of thing before, and maybe she hasn't :p ).

Urszula actually played very well herself; I would like to see her again.

For me, this was the match of the day. It was so enjoyable to see Zi play.

Final match of the day (for me) was Shuai vs. Tatiana Malek.

I won't say a lot about this. I did like Tatjana quite a bit personally, and felt badly for her loss. I think she can do better.

These pictures are from the warm up (and the last one is at end of match) because of no use of flash during the match - it was getting dark.

P.S. The outfit you see on Sofia is "the outfit" of the tournament... have seen more players wearing it for matches than any other.

Mostly the skirt is in the burgundy but also bright blue. Tops are different coordinating versions.

Some players were wearing that outfit at AO.

Cool report. I like your description of Zi both as a player and a person. She is very cute and does come across as being very sweet. And wow does she hit the ball flat. It would be hard to think of many players who hit just over the net so regularly. Really nice player to watch and easily my favourite of the Chinese girls. :hearts:

As for Ula, what can one say? It something amazes me that Aga and Ula were brought up together and yet they are so totally different personalities.

I bought a Grounds Pass for the day, which means I could go to any of the side courts and sit where I wanted, but in the show courts and stadium I had to sit in a high and far away location.

The match above, Craybas vs. Safina, was on one of the show courts that required a ticket to sit by the court, but I snuck into the lower area. That is why the pictures are so low and close.

The next match I took a look at was Daniela Hantuchova vs. Angela Haynes. This was in the main stadium, and I went to my seating area. I couldn't believe how high up I was. It was actually scary being that high up. :tape: And of course hard to follow a tennis match. So I didn't stay long at all, and never went back to that main stadium.

You will see the location from these pictures. In the first picture, take a look at the people at the highest level. That is where I was sitting.

The match was hopeless for Haynes. She did well to win a few games. :tape: I know she is out of doubles, also. (She played with Mashona Washington .)

I saw Daniela practicing later, and have a few pics of her from her practice; will post later.

I even got to hand a ball to Gasquet (that was the highlight of my day...lol...) Definitely want to go again next year and for a longer duration. Nice pics.

I saw Maria practice yesterday shortly before her match, she looked GORGEOUS in person. She looked GREAT in practice, served well, and was hitting corners with her groundstrokes. After her practice she did not sign any autographs or take any pictures with anyone, just got on her golf cart and was hauled away.

During her match with Cohen-Aloro, she was solid in the first set. I got up and left at *5-1 as I was in the nose bleeds and extremely bored watching Maria treat Cohen-Aloro like her b*tch :tape:

A side point about Yuri who is THE rudest motherf*cker I've seen in a while. Youzhny was practicing on the court right next to where Maria was practicing. After Maria was taken away on a golf cart, Yuri walks ON TO the court where Youzhny was practicing... DID NOT WAIT until they were done volleying, just walks right through the court AT THE NET...does not even walk around the court. Even people at the public parks have better tennis etiquette than that. At least Michael Joyce had sense enough to wait until Youzhny and his coach started picking up balls to walk through the court. Yes it's true Yuri is an ass...just digusting.

Ok, thanks. Is Hao-Ching a player? She was doing the workout, not the girl sitting.

Yes, I saw Peng (doubles only with Sun), and Zi's match. I'll have something to post in a little while.

She is,she's played very few tournaments so far. She's now like 14,and has already won a 50K doubles pro title with Yung-Jan last october in Taoyuan.

OMG she is only 14? She is very beautiful.

OK, I will revise the description to show Yung Jan practicing with hitting partner (her sister).

Sorry, I did not see Yung Jan's match.

Next, I saw a few games - most of the second set - of Eleni Daniilidou vs. Klara Zakopalova.

Eleni was extremely bothered by the line calls, to the point that she may have even filed a complaint or something. An official was summoned, who watched the rest of the match. Didn't get the entire story but there was a big deal about line calls.

I think Eleni "has it all" physically; she should be a top player.
Zakapalova played great - very consistent, skilled, and smart.

Akgul's match vs. Shahar started just before the Peng/Sun vs. Safina/Vesnina doubles match.

So I could watch only a little bit of Peng/Sun vs. Safina Vesnina.

There was a big crowd for this, apparently to watch Dinara. I guess because they know her brother.

Guess who I stood next to? Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell. :p I almost asked Goldie for some sunscreen. :tape: :p

This match was a big disappointment. I don't want to make one particular Chinese player look bad, so I won't say who lost it for them. :tape: The tie breaker just went really badly, with Dinara/Elena getting way out ahead right away, and Shuai/Tiantian unable to make it up.

Now some pictures from some other matches I saw.

I have to limit pictures to one per player, now, because my limit is almost used for the month on flickr.

=============================
Akgul Amanmuradova vs. Shahar Peer

Akgul plays with lots of slice, I think to take off the heat of Shahar's groundstrokes and not allow her to develop her rhythm. Akgul has a very fast serve (110-120 mph); which Shahar had to work to handle (but Shahar had a much better ROS percentage, so  ).

Just too many errors from Akgul to do any damage. She did come back at the end, but too many games lost by then to recoup.

Unfortunately, this is the best picture I got of Akgul. I had to sit in an upper area, and it was so hot at that time it was hard to even take photos.

Zheng Jie vs. Kateryna Bondarenko

I made it for the last game. (Jie won 6-2, 6-4.) Took me by surprise that it was the last game, so I got some shots of the players exiting the court. :p

=====================

Yan Zi vs. Aiko Nakamura

This match was just like Yan's match against U. Radwanska in the first round (lost the first as a "warm up", won the second 6-0), but in the third Aiko fought back, then Zi fell down hard on a jumping groundstroke. She fell on her butt and left palm/wrist. The trainer was called and this took a v-e-r-y long time. And it got really, really cold and it was windy. So all continuity was lost, and the last couple games of the match were like a "sudden death" new match. Which Aiko won.

Because it was dark and couldn't use flash, these pics are during a set break (between first and second set) when coaches were called, and "the handshake" after the match.

OK. I will try this, for my last set.

My last day at the tournament was Sunday. I was there all day.

Lot of pictures.

I also had a really special opportunity with a player, and you will hear more about what that was later.

Today I went sightseeing, and I fly home tomorrow. (Have to wake up at 5AM :tape:.)

Well, that was a complete waste of time. About an hour down the drain on imageshack.

And now I have to get some sleep (3 hours :tape: :help:) before I have to get up to leave for the airport.

So these pics (from Sunday) will probably not be posted until Wednesday.

Sorry.

Yes, I left Indian Wells. Flew there on Sunday. I attended tennis Monday, Tuesday of qualies. Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday - Rounds 1, 2 and 3. Three days "off". Flew home on Tuesday. :)

So I have 85 pictures from Sunday, and only room to upload about 30 of them.

These are old by now, but I'll still post them just to complete this thread.
