I watched Serena's QF,SF and Final from Bangalore I was only impressed by the SF the final and QF were just awful movement from Serena and her BH is a mess.

Im a fan of Serena but right now I would say she was very lucky to beat Venus if anyone saw that final yesterday it was poor play from Patty and Serena just a bad match to watch.

Serena's footwork is so bad its hard to watch I watched the AO final a few weeks ago and it makes me sad to see her moving well in some matches and terribly in others

Maybe Serena was fatiuged from her match with Venus I Hope that was the case because Patty should be ashamed she lost in straight sets with Serena playing like crap

Miami will be tough but I really hope Serena steps it up if not her Bangalore form will have her out in the QF's or 4R

Anyone's thoughts on Serena's form in bangalore?

We are guaranteed a QF because she has proved she can win so far without playing her ABSOLUTE best.
But then getting past another top 8 seed will be the real test!

She can do it tho!

Serena might not have played well yesterday but was encouraging to me was the fact she had more might on her shots than she did in Australia.

I'd rather see her go for her shots than play it safe. And the final wasn't all that bad. She won the important points on her terms and again that was encouraging to me.

It's been almost one full year since she lost her mojo. The last good tournament I saw from her was the 06USO. Even though she lost to the other girl, she was going for her shots. She's not anymore. Even though she won Miami and Melbourne last year, she delivered only 3 and half convincing matches but that's it. Less than 4 good matches in more than one year.:help:

She has a huge mental fortitude but her game is still not there. I'd give the title to Pova but you never know with Serena (see the OZ). After all, Miami is hers so... Hope she changes her approach and shows a different mentality on court.

She played as well as she had to, and she won. PERIOD.

She rarely EVER plays wire-to-wire brilliant tennis for a tournament (hell, rarely ever in a whole match). But she wins, because she's a fighter.

She wasn't great in all 7 of her matches in Australia last year. She wasn't great in all 6 of her matches in Miami last year, hell she was 1 point away from losing TWICE. But she held on, fought through the bad patches and won.

Stop writing indictments on her play, just becuase she's rusty. :o (and if I'm not mistaken, didn't she beat 2 top 20 players last week? )

Seriously, it's getting old.

She is playing well enough to reach the quarter, at least.

Bye for top seeds in the first round is always tricky to figure for some posters.

I'd say she has more than a slight chance of defending her title. She's Serena Williams, she always has more than a slight chance.

Huh?
Serena played unbeliebebly after being down against Petrova in the third round in Australia, never looked back through the slam and then through Miami. That is way more than just 3 and half convincing matches.

I think that's his point...

Miami is Serena's turf. I mean, she beat Dementieva here after all, perhaps the biggest win of her career, so if she can beat Elena in Miami I don't see her ever losing there again unless it's to Peak Venus.

Serena 4 Miami. :rocker:

No no no.

She played a perfect match against Janko and Maria. Then again Maria and Hénin(even if I wasn't too convinced by the bagel ) in Miami. After that: nothing.

One time Serena or Venus said that Miami was their "backyard tournament", and over the last 9 years they had tremendous success there... So I think it will be really hard to stop either one of the sisters in this tournament, even if they´re not playing their best!

And against Petrova in the third round in Australia, also all her matches in Miami were perfect despise almost losing in the final.

I thought she played well against: Sharapova (AO), Jankovic (AO), Safarova (AO), Peer(Miami), Vaidisova (Miami), Sharapova (Miami), Vaidisova & Azarenka (AO 08).

Oh and she played awful against Henin at Miami Final...after that match she was never the same. That's when she started pushign the ball a lot.

Exactly, I'd rather see her going for her shots and missing half time a la 2001, than pushing the ball around and still missing half the time a la 2007.

P.s. her serve was looking good and that's the main thing these days, if she can cut down on 1/4 or so of her UEs then she's good to go for Miami I'd say, with a mildly kind draw.

Let's take a look a this:

Serena's Miami History:

-9 Appearances
-8 Times Reached QF or better (only exception 2000 - Lost R16 to J. Capriati)
-5 Times Reached F (4 Times Champ, including 3 consecutive)
-Longest Winning Streak - 21 Matches (3 Championships and a QF)
-27-1 in last 5 appearances

and it's safe to say that she wasn't in stellar form EVERY time she won, but she finds a way to win.

True, But those defenses came during her glory days, And Those wins plus her Wimbledon 03 title are the only tournys shes defended... I dont expect her to win, but she'll get past the 2nd round...

Who is going to beat her? Maybe Sharapova, Venus or Henin can do it but not many others have the goods to deliver against Serena even if she isn't playing well. She'll have the support of the crowd as well. Quarters or semis at least. (Unless she meets Sharapova in 4R again).

She always plays well in Miami

Only a few players could probably stop her Justine, Maria (although Serena still has a mental advantage against her imo), Venus, and maybe Jelena

You don't know what to expect from Serena in Miami. She could come out the gate playing championship level tennis or stink up the joint. I think it's the reason she's such an exciting player to watch. I know the haters will be tuning in to see what she does on court. :tape::lol:

Hmmmm...I don't think yesterday's match is really indicative. She played as well she needed to imo. Still has the serve and as other have stated: she's going more for her shots. THAT is the most important thing. No slicing and dicing. GOING for her shots, will be important for Serena.

Miami is Serena and Venus tournament.
Its like Lindsay's Indian Wells
So everytime they showed up in this respective tournaments, They can win it.

plus, not to mention that most of the top players will also be in IW, one never knows how "fresh" those players will be down in the Miami heat and humidity.

Serena brings it in Miami, that tournament for her is like RG for Justine or Wimbledon for Venus.

And no way will she want to lose early, we saw how fierce she was against Maria in the 4th round last year, so I expect at least an SF if she's playing crap and a W if she's decent.

didi anyone take into consideration that the air in bangalore is very thin. It's hard for them to breath and it's just a mess. All players have said it.

Miami is SERENA'S Tournament. She'll get far, trust me. She does have a big shot at defending her title as she knows if she loses her points she'll slide down the rankings again. GO SERENA!

At wimbledon last year, she played well. She wasn't just pushing the ball every time there.

And in Australia and Perth she was firing some really good hard groudstrokes. Her match against Jankovic this year was terrible and sure she was a bit iffy in Bangalore, but there's no real change since last year, she still pushes the ball and all that stuff. She's a bit rusty but its nothin super serious.

It's hard to say. Serena seems to have lost...something. I dont know what it is.

The craziest stat IMO is that she's only lost to 3 players here in 9 appearances: Hingis, Venus and Capriati.

The most shocking win was in 2004 when she returned from injury and won Miami right away(although her competition was definitely lacking.. Craybas in QF and Daniilidou in SF). I wouldnt be completely surprised if she won, but she's not expected to.

She needs to avoid Venus, Jankovic and Henin early on IMO. Sharapova she can handle with her limited speed.. same with Ivanovic (that is if Serena is playing well). If the draw falls well, she can definitely win here.

bangalore is not an indication of anything...high altitude...hard to breathe...balls flying everywhere....the fact that she was able to control herself better than the others given not playing since the AO is a good thing and not bad imo....and for crying out loud....her movement was not bad, she's never gonna motor around the court like in 02 but she's better than most others still in that department...her footwork was bad and they are two distinct things....e.g. lindsay has piss poor movement but excellent footwork...

I don't know, like Jennifer, Serena plays her best in Miami. You can never count her out there, I'd definitely put her in the SF.

I agree, Venus/ Jankovic/ Henin before the semis could be trouble for her.....Serena still owns Sharapova IMO....Regardless of how "good" sharapova is playing right now.... she wont forget the spankings Serena put on her last year....

Since 2002 she miss only one Miami and only once she not won title (in 2005).

I know that Maria is currently player in best shape but for me Serena is still No#1 favorite to win this tournament. This is her favorite tournaments on her favorite (medium fast hardcourt) surface and fact that playing with 50% (except in SF) she just won her first tier-II in last 4 or 5 years (she always played tier-II with 50%) is of course more good sign than bad.
