View Full Version : If you could choose someone to dominate this year...

who would you pick?

I would pick Serena. Im so sick of her having a good week here and there. When Serena was in her dominating form years ago, it was fun to watch as she crushed every opponent. Such great display of tennis. Sort of like how Maria took over the Aussie open earlier. Second choice would go to either Venus or Justine. I guess im biased as ive seen their careers grow in the past decade.

Well my choice is obvious. In my dreams I'd love Maria to dominate the tour this year. She is my fave and always will be. I want her to win the french and have a couple great wins over Henin and the Williams sisters. If she could win the calender year GS and the oylimpics that would be great too. And I want her to end the year #1. :)

Daniela of course, but it would be amazing if Dellacqua became brilliant.

I wouldn't choose Dementieva, actually. If I could just get her to squeeze in a slam or something, then sure, but I'd pick Venus. I'd love to see her add some weeks to her #1 rank.

Sharapova or Ivanovic. Someone relatively young.

Obviously everyone would chose their fave, so barring Misa (coz that sure as hell ain't gonna happen) then I wouldn't mind Sveta to dominate actually. Seeing as I don't really like many of the others in the top 10, but she's alright.

If Lindsay could dominate I think it'd be the best tennis story for tiiiiiiiiiiime. Although obvously the best seasons are where no one dominates.

Actually: 2004 wasn't the best. I mean like a few people going for the big titles, different winners, close matches.

One person dominating is when the tour is a snooze. 2005 and 2001 were fun as there were several contenders in each event. 2004 was just a mess.

I would love Lindsay to dominate again but that won't happen because she is playing a limited schedule. She's dominated the tour for years though so no worries.

It would be great to have the Williams sisters back dominating but they don't play enough so that won't happen.

The only realistic player is Henin. I don't think Sharapova can sustain the form she is in long enough to dominate a year. I want Ana to win a slam because she has the game and personality suited to dominating the sport.

Two people is okay though, right? I'm thinking the USO 2001 - Wimbledon 2003!? I wouldn't mind that kind of domination again. They've had their lows since then but I'd love for them to come back strong for a good stretch of time before they take their final bow in a few years. I know Venus has had some outstanding summers but I'd love for her to have a longer stretch of domination.

you don't have to beat her in a slam sf to deny her a shot at reaching the final.

Lindsay's 1999:
W - Sydney, Madrid, Wimbledon, Stanford, Tokyo, Philadelphia, New York
F - New Haven
SF - Melbourne, San Diego, Los Angeles, Flushing Meadows
QF - Tokyo [i], Miami, Paris, Filderstadt
3R - Amelia Island
2R - Indian Wells
W/L: 59-9

Lindsay's 2000:
W - Melbourne, Scottsdale, Indian Wells, Linz, Philadelphia
F - Sydney, Miami, Wimbledon, Stanford, Los Angeles, Flushing Meadows, Zurich
QF - Eastbourne
3R - Rome, Toronto
2R - San Diego, Sydney - Olympics
1R - Paris, New York
W/L: 57-12

There are a few things I changed around, like some Fed Cup victories, but Lindsay did NOT dominate at all in '99 or '00. Hingis was more dominate in '99 and Venus was much more dominate in '00, at least in the second half. Lindsay arguably could have had the first half, but that's it. She lost too many finals.

And Dementieva is the Dubai and Moscow queen, thank you very much. ;)

Lindsay dominated the tour and the rankings on-and-off in the late 90's and the first years of this decade (where she won 3 slams fyi) until injury stopped her at the end of 2001. She got back to the top in 04-05 aswell.

Oh, there's more to tennis than slams. :wavey:

Some details added

LindsayRulz
Mar 10th, 2008, 10:56 PM
Guys, from end 99 to middle 00 Lindsay dominated. From summer 00 to 01 it was Venus. Overall it's tough to say who really dominated in 2000, they both had a very good year and maybe Venus peaked at a better moment.

LudwigDvorak
Mar 10th, 2008, 10:56 PM
Those are good details I noticed when compiling that list, but they still don't derail from my original point--you can't dominate when you have someone beating you every time they play you, plus she had eight pre-QF finishes and did nothing on clay plus didn't dominate the hardcourt scene either like Venus did for a few years. That leaves...basically nothing, aside from a couple of great Wimbledons leaving grass.

Finally someone in this thread with a brain (besides me  )

From summer 00 to 01 it was Venus.

Venus didn't do much at AO 2001 or RG 2001 so she didn't dominate a whole year.

If only Francesca Schiavone could dominate this year... that would be too funny. And would give a lot of people hope. Wouldn't it be nice?

BarsonlyOne

I would call both Lindsay's and Venus' dominance as sporadic, though Venus had a longer "air" of dominance to her than Lindsay did. Barring injuries, perhaps Lindsay couldve done better.
