Thanks Rena. :yeah: It would have been a total travesty if the Felon's Frau got to claim a Tier II title for winning a (weak) Tier III draw on her side with JJ's upset loss . (And helped the Criminal Coach find a new victim). Even Larry Scott dissed the event in terms of it being up to Tier II standards in terms of the facility, a rare case of public candor on his part.

Question....how was her movement? At AO she seemed to be moving faster...is she still on that track or is she moving more slowly.... a la 2007?

I am glad Serena won, I was a bit worried because Schnyder can trouble her.
I did not see the match and will see it later on Eurosport but winning ugly like she seems to have done is sometimes better because it can do wonders for her confidence and her game. First title of the year I hope there will be many more.

Seriously. Is there something wrong with the balls? This cannot be a final between the number 11 and 12 ranked players in the world! I HATE watching Serena play like this. The errors, the complaining, histrionics etc. Suck it up and play for God's sake. The commentators have even given up on trying to make excuses for their horrific play. They sound bored.

I'm so glad she won and ended the 11 months drought period. She was not at her best and even though a win is a win, I hope she steps up her game in other tourneys. Well done and more grease to her elbows.

All she had was her serve today, normally when a player is as off as Serena was they don't come away with the win. Naturally, Serena and us fans want her to be in better form, but it's actually more impressive for her to win playing so bad.

Anyone can win playing their best, but not many can win playing their worse. And at the end of the day it's all about getting the win, mission accomplished!!!

Actually watching the extended highlights last night ... I thought the first set was pretty good. Nice contrast in styles, competitive - Patty nearly taking it into a tie-break. The second set in comparison was piss poor, Serena unconvincing .... Schnyder much worse.

Brilliance oughta bring you major championships ...sorry but your statement is just not true.

Apparently Serena does have some injuries ...she spoke about them in the ceremony

Pretty bad timing of you to insult Patty like this, while Serena has been playing bad this whole tournament, including some embarassement moments imo, but oh, it's Serena?, so it's forbidden to say so. After the match against Venus, some people were stating she had played some fantastic tennis  and now all of a sudden the thread title on itself is insulting enough toward the opponent , now she had poor play? Tell me, how come Venus lost from an injured, poor playing Serena? It seems like everything is turned into an advantage by some williams fans: the match between the sisters wasn't fixed, but Serena played poorly, uh fantastic.
I think it's inappropriate to insult Patty, she certainly has game. You don't have to win major championships in order to proof so, Serena and other top players are hitting harder than Patty for one, and we all know Patty's changing mental attitude. Btw, vise versa, Sharapova has won major championships with hardly having game.

Last night Serena and I played each other. I was really excited for the match, and tried to have a normal day and just relax and treat it as every other match. I had a good warm up, and was pumped up for the match! It is always a little tough for me to play my younger sister. I started off the match a little slow, and Serena got a quick lead and won the first set 6-3. I started to play a lot better in the second set, and won it 6-3. The third set was tight all the way through. I went down a break and 5-4, and Serena had a match point. We played a really long incredible point, but I was able to come back and tie it at 5 all..and then go up 6-5 and even had a match point on Serena’s serve. She hit a great serve and we were back to deuce. The match then went into a tiebreaker, and I saved one more match point before eventually losing it 7-4. It was a really tough, hard fought match. Playing these matches is what we always dreamed about as kids and it really is a privilege. We both want to win as much as any other match but there is something slightly different about playing your sister. Our routine doesn’t change….we eat together, practice together, talk about things going on in our lives…but between the first serve and match point we are playing for the title. Serena played Patty Schnyder today in the final and did actually win the title! I was there to root her on. I will be going back to Florida tonight and I will start preparing for the Sony Ericsson Open which is in just over two weeks.

Listen, I've been a Williams fan for 11 years. Hardcore. But I find the whole "a win is a win" or "get that W at any cost" line of reasoning extremely condescending. That's a game plan for someone just starting out on the tour, not someone who should be in supreme control of the massive amount of talent Serena and Venus both posses. At this stage in their careers they should be playing inspired tennis or at least extremely above average. Serena and Venus are capable of far greater tennis than they are exhibiting at the moment. I only say this because the desperation that these statements infer is beneath both Venus and Serena. They became who they are because of inspirational stellar play and to see them struggling at tournament after tournament is a little disheartening. I stayed up to watch that match and was disappointed in her performance again. For the first time, it seems to me like she doesn't think much of the game anymore. It saddens me because my love for the game is just as strong as it has ever been and I don't profit from it. I just don't think I'll be going out of my way to watch her play anymore until she puts a little more heart into it. And I'm not talking about grandiose overly dramatic fist pumping heart. I mean the heart that leads the top player to week in and week out consistently good play. That match looked like two junior players who somehow made it to the final and had no idea what to do with the ball. Embarrassing for a WTA final.

Honestly, I'm really suprised there's such a massive swathe of negative Serena "fans."

I just wish such fans would keep their negativty eating up their own little hearts and not try to spread it.

Serena won her first title in a year. I'd rather she played like shite and won than played mediocre and lost in the quarters. Tennis is about winning, not about playing your best every single match. I think some of you expect too much anyway. What, you thought Serena was going to rediscover her 2002 form in Bangalore? Pfft.

What I was most impressed with Serena in this match, was that when she saw that she couldn't get any rhythm on her shots, she changed her game plan. Instead of going for more, she became more patient on the rallies, especially when she saw that Patty was making errors too, and tried to just get the ball back in play until she had a winner or Patty made a mistake. That is why she won the last five games of the second set. As ugly as the match was, they both made some great shots and Serena's serve came through for her when the rest of her game was not on.

I think some of you expect too much anyway. What, you thought Serena was going to rediscover her 2002 form in Bangalore? Pfft.

I totally agree. This is her first match back from AO '08 and she won. Her heart is in it, simply because she's still playing and financially she doesn't have to. Everyone is slow to form after being out a long time. Not every player plays his/her best in every match and it's not desperation to say a "win is a win" and celebrate your fave's victory, ugly or not. My most joyful memories of Serena and Venus have been when they are not playing that well and find a way to dig out a win.

Andy Murray just beat Roger Federer. Justine lost Dubai before the finals, Jelena lost before the semis in Bangalore to a nobody. It's idiotic to think that everyone is always going to play their best tennis all of the time. They are human. No one is taking anything away from Patty. Neither played their best tennis, but when that happens, it's all about the competitive spirit and it just so happens that Serena had that yesterday moreso than Patty.

Now, if some so-called "fans" don't want to accept that or doubt their so-called fave's heart in the game and can no longer support or watch them play, that's their choice. It's not about to deter any of Serena or Vee's real fans from continuing to watch and enjoy their presence on the tour.

Are you new to tennis? I've been following the sport for over 20 years now and if you think it's so uncommon or rare for an elite player of Serena's stature to play such a horrid match I got news for you, you're wrong. My idol, Steffi Graf, had some MAJOR stinkers and they didn't just happen in the beginning of her career. There were times when she couldn't keep a ball in the court for anything, and when she was off what made it worse than when Serena is off is that Steffi would hit routine shots in the middle of the net without even going for a winner. I've got a couple of awful matches from Stef, so if you like I'll go through my collection and recommend a few.

The sad truth is that player, whether you're Serena Williams, or even Roger Federer, all have bad days- and sometimes bad tournaments. It's actually unusual for a player to have a bad tournament because usually one bad match is enough to send you packing.

I'm sorry but I'm going to proudly celebrate any and all Serena wins. The ugly wins, in some ways, are just as satisfying as the flawless wins and I welcome all wins.
