Two Rounds.

Sesil Karatantcheva vs. McCall Jones.
(see story below). This match is at 12 Noon Pacific time today, Saturday.

Another match today: Raquel Kops-Jones vs. Nelly Radeva.

Apparently another player, Gail Brodsky, also earned a spot. So I'm not clear on how the rounds work and who is in /out.

Jones and Easter Bowl champion Gail Brodsky will advance to the four-player prequalifier on March 8-9. The winner of the prequalifier will earn a spot into qualifying for the Pacific Life Open.
Final match will be played at 12 Noon on Sunday.

Winner gets a Wild Card into Indian Wells qualifying (which starts on Monday).

====================================

INDIAN WELLS - Sesil Karatantcheva returns to the Pacific Life Open, the site of her professional debut four years ago, hoping to get out of a slump.

Karatantcheva, 18, has lost in the first round of her last three tournaments.
Today, Karatantcheva will take on McCall Jones in the second match in the Pacific Life Open prequalifier. Matches begin at noon today.
On the men's side, La Quinta's A.J. Bartlett will take on Levar Harper-Griffith at noon prior to the Karatantcheva-Jones match.
The prequalifier ends with the finals Sunday at noon. The winner of the prequalifier will earn a wildcard into qualifying, which begins Monday.
As a 14-year old, Kara-tantcheva won two rounds in her professioanl debut at the Pacific Life Open. Prior to her match against Maria Sharapova, Karatantcheva said she was going to "kick her (behind) off."
Two years ago, Kara-tantcheva tested positive for nandrolone and was placed on a two-year suspension.
Karatantcheva came off the suspension and went on a 14-match winning streak (19 total, including qualifying and prequalifying) to win ITF titles in Surprise Ariz., and the Charlie M Desert Classic in February at the La Quinta Resort and Club.
However, Karatantcheva has lost in the first round main draw of her last three tournaments.
Jones, who has signed to play at BYU next year, has also had success in the desert. She twice reached age-group finals at the Easter Bowl in singles and another time in doubles.

Anyway... I just spent 60 minutes trying to get information on this event. Why does that have to be so hard!!??!!

Gotta go now, but bottom line I wanted to share is that Sesil is playing this pre-qualifier, and the match is today.

I wonder what the hell happened to Gail Brosdky. I mean, she played all the way through that tournament to get a spot in pre-quaifying, and for some reason she doesn't play?!?! No idea who she is, but I really wonder about her.

In other pre-qualifying matches Sesil Karatantcheva, 18, returned to the Pacific Life Open, where she made her pro debut at 14. She faced McCall Jones in a pre-qualifier, taking a 6-0, 6-3 victory against the two-time Easter Bowl singles finalist from Cota de Caza who will play for BYU in Utah next season.

Karatantcheva will face Costa Mesa's Nelly Radeva today in the pre-qualifying final at noon on Stadium 2. Radeva defeated Raquel Kops-Jones 6-7 (4), 6-4, 6-4.

Good to see that Nelly Radeva won too :)

Wild Cards Awarded at Pac-Life Pre-Qualifier

Sesil Karatantcheva d. Nelly Radeva 6-1, 6-3

Roman Borvanov d. Levar Harper-Griffith 6-1, 6-1

In a final display of professional tennis might, Roman Borvanov and Sesil Karatantcheva advanced Sunday to the qualifying rounds of the 2008 Pacific Life Open.

Concluding the third-annual pre-qualifying tournament that began in February with the challenger round, four finalists from a field of 64 for both men and women squared off yesterday against two ATP and WTA pros in the pre-qualifying semifinal.

Borvanov and Karatantcheva receive the final two wild cards into the qualifying round beginning Monday.

Why was Raquel Kops-Jones playing in this anyway? She got into the qualifying draw comfortably, the last direct acceptance was about 200 spots below her in the rankings. I guess I would like to have seen Lucic given the chance to play to defend her points from last year. I think she may disappear again once she drops way down the rankings list after IW.
