Serena was just that much better on the important points. But wow, the point at 5-4 AD Serena was an AMAZING one.

Serena was up 5-3 in last set had MP at 5-4 but Venus saved with a great point

Venus had a match point at 6-5 but serena haved with a forehand.

I think both played okay overall. Sometimes mediocre/horrible tennis and sometimes brilliant tennis. Serena looked so negative out there and you could tell how disappointed Venus was. Entertaining match though. Those two match points that both saved were amazing :worship:

Did anyone notice Venus not give Serena a hug afterwards?? Hasn't she always given Serena a hug after ever match whether win or lose?
Ohhh and that was a cold handshake at the end.
 Hopefully no drama there btwn the two.

And good luck Serena against Schnyder!! hopefully she's not drained too much.

Mar 8th, 2008, 05:27 PM
Serena :woohoo:

She missed a match point at *5-4, but managed to save one at *5-6 with a fantastic serve and hit some great forehands in the tiebreak to win it.

Not the highest quality, but I thought it was thoroughly entertaining and both of them hit some crushing winners.

Venus

Too bad Venus had to lose.

Michael!
Mar 8th, 2008, 05:28 PM
That´s so clear, Venus can´t win a tie-break in the 3rd set against Serena.
Nothing new, Serena has just more confidence than Venus..
Both had a match-point in the 3rd set, and Vee had her best chance at 6-5*...wasted
Really sad...poor Venus, another tennis tragedy for her!
Now I hope Patty beats Serena!

venus please learn ow to win a tiebreak. yo would think with that serve she would be able to win a tiebreak after going u a minibreak. for anyoe who saw the match did serena save the 7bpsin the irst or did venus waste them (im assuming the later since vee usually needs a lot of bpsto break sere even against and awful maria at wimbledon she was about 4/1000). serena should win the title now. outside of wimbledon venus is becoming the new vaidisova.

Great save in that game at 4-5 in final set but with the form Serena is in, it was a match that Vee should have won in straight sets :( 1st set was absolutely awful but at least she picked it up in the other sets.

Congrats Serena. :yeah:  saved MP as well.

That was awkward match. The first set was great, good tennis from both, many winners. The second set was strange. Serena got the early break but then she was somehow not the same player. She didn't even hit that serve properly, she was just not hitting through it. Ugly tennis in second set, especially on Serena's service games. The third set was also not a great quality, but there were two or three AMAZIng points (one when Venus saved MP at 4-5). It was very close in the end which made the match exciting. Overall apart from first set, poor quality.

The handshake was pretty cold, wasn't it? :o Not even a hug and no after-match discussion.

What a great match. So tense. Serena was moving so slowly in the first set but kept spanking the winners against Venus' serve.

The second was weird but Venus picked it up.

I seriously thought Serena had choked the match away. Venus save the match point with an amazing forehand to end a great point. Then Serena's serve went. Then at 6-5 MP down it came back and allowed her to save the match with a forehand winner. Then she just went through the tiebreak.

Exciting match. My fave point was not only the match point saved by Venus, but the point when Serena came in and volleyed really close to the net and then Venus tried passing her again and Serena hit a backhand overhead winner :worship:

Now win the title Serena

Where obviously losing to someone ranked outside the top 100 is worse, I also see where this poster is coming from. Serena is a very known quantity for Vee and with Serena playing quite poorly (especially in that opening set),Vee knew she should have taken advantage. At least she fought well though and props to Serena for not failing at 5-6.

HAHA....

Well as a WILLIAMS fan i am happy that both of them came out WANTING to win....

And didn't give up until the last point!

and that can be seen in the match points they both saved!

I would have been just as happy (if not more) if Venus won!

I don't know if I'd call them lapses more like that she has a very high risk game and it;s bound to go off at some point. I could probably count on one hand the matches that Venus has played perfectly all the way through.

Venus was pissed. You could tell because they didn't even hug each other, they just shook hands. It was kinda funny, but you could tell they both wanted that match REALLY badly. Serena played AWESOME TENNIS in the first set and her forehand was on fire. She had her usual lapse after going up 2-0 in the second, although Venus just started going for broke and was making her shots. It was really tense in the third and Serena looked to be advancing at 5-4 but Venus just stepped up her game a little more and broke for 5-5. Then they were basically on even terms. In the tiebreak, Venus just made errors at the wrong time. Also, I don't know what the deal was but Serena didn't seem to be serving at full speed sometimes. But overall, it was a good match, there were some SPECTACULAR POINTS that were just breath-taking too!

Venus has done these things, and had such mental lapses in probably 90% of the matches in her career. I hardly see her "sorting it out" asap. The difference is against Serena she doesn't let you get away with such lapses where most of the tour would.

Honestly this is Venus' best loss in a while. This match was a true showcase match for women's tennis. Both players should be proud that they were given the opportunity to play a match like this, especially given their form and results lately. Bravo to both, I'm so pround of my girls right now.

Why are people being so bitter towards Serena? While I'm disappointed that with this loss, it is to a much better opponent than Memphis and Doha so I see it as a step forward.

Serena has matchpoint which Venus saved and Venus had matchpoint with Serena saved. Great for both of them in a match that could have gone either way to fight it out to the end.

Hmmm, yet another match Venus has lost having MP..

This is soooo much different than the other times where she hit a DF (TWICE) on macthpoints and other times when she jsut hit an UE. And usually she just fades after that. Today..Serena hit an almost unreturnable 1st serve up the T and then smacked a way forehand winner. Then she hit 2 more great 1st serves to hold. Venus didn't choke her match point away.

IMO this tournament is a huge improvement over AO, Doha, and Memphis. Where she was progressively getting worse from the 1st RD of AO. At least she beat a quality opponent in Vera and took Serena to the absolute limit. Neither girls played their best but there were signs of good play here and there and I think Venus should be positive that her game is coming together slowly.

:) Any match that Venus loses is great news as far as I'm concerned... and this one seems particularly heart-breaking...

:yeah: WOW! Great match!

Obviously I'm happy that Serena won, but I hope that this inspires both of them to train harder and get better and make sure that these matches are only in the finals of big events! :bounce:

That extra slam and the fact she's actually allowed to play tennis really has made you bitter hasn't it?

I hope Serena trash her badly

Why? It's a totally understandable and legitimate statement. She's never beaten Venus in 8 tries, and she's beaten Serena 3 times, including their last meeting. Of course she'd rather play someone she's beaten a few times, as opposed to someone she's never beaten. Any sensible person would see that.

Watch some of the highlights, sounds like it was a top quality match with some good rallies from both Vee & Rena. Obviously I'm sad that Vee lost   but at least it was to the better player so hopefully she gain some confidence from it :)

Well done Serena :yeah: take the title for vee :armed:

I freely admit I strongly dislike Martina Hingis, but I also have enough sense to know that she had a brilliant game and she deserves a lot of credit for what she achieved, especially at such a young age. Not to mention that some of her matches with Venus, ones she won and lost, are absolutetly classics.

Venus, please work on your serve. Serena was obviously determined and ready to take down her sister today.. a little shocking based on her form in her last match.

Hopefully, someone uploads the match.

from the stats, Venus actually had the better serving day.. she almost served 50% on second serves, which is unheard of for her.....

How did she serve in the tiebreak? Or on key points? Or in that game where Serena broke at love I think in the third set?

I didn't see it so I dont know...but if her serve was more reliable, on the level of Sharapova or even Henin.. im guessing it would have been easier.

well, I didnt get to see it either, but from the stats... Serena served 7 doubles faults to Venus' 2... The announcers claim her serve "Held up" under pressure.... and 49% of second serve points won for Vee (or any other player against Serena) aint half bad....
