I don't understand it. Top 2 seeds at IW are Ana and Sveta. Lena just beat both of them.
If Sharapova draws in the other half, there would be a great chance of a rematch of the 2006 final.

Miami will have Sharapova. And Henin, both Williams and everyone else.

But IW gave us one of Lena's all time best wins.

That comeback against Justine from 2-6 2-5 to win 2-6 7-5 7-5 was something special.

But yeah, March through May is the most gruelling period every year, esp. since a big chunk is on clay, so good scheduling is the key to arrive in top form to the FO.

31-Garbin vs. BYE

19-Pennetta vs. BYE
Kanepi vs. Muller
Ani vs. WC-Oudin
13-Schiavone vs. BYE

12-Zvonareva vs. BYE
Pin vs. Rezai
Qualfier vs. Parmentier

7-Vaidisova (Elena Dementieva) vs. BYE

Hmm, average draw. Not bad seeing her highest seed is Ivanovic who is her bitch. Not much else that would have troubled her, maybe Zvonareva or Schiavone but not much else. Anyway, Lena hasn't entered so there is no point dweling on it.

Corswandt
Mar 10th, 2008, 10:40 PM
lena should have played IW. end.

At her age, she can no longer whore every tournament in sight. IW-Miami-Amelia-Charleston in consecutive weeks, possibly going deep in all of them, would have been too taxing. In 2006, Petrova went from a similar schedule to win Berlin, entered RG as one of the two main favourites, and then what happened?

It seems Lena still fancies herself a claycourter, and has built her schedule with preparation for RG as its main goal. First time I've seen any kind of plan behind her scheduling, and it turns out to be a wholly misguided one.

Demska

SIN DIOS NI LEY
Mar 11th, 2008, 12:09 AM
Terrible on clay ---> this applies to basically every player on the WTA Tour apart of Henin. Elena doesn´t lose nothing trying to have a good preparation before RG even if she is "terrible" , the whole WTA Tour is terrible

Although , I don´t see any relation between the green quick stuff and red slow stuff. If she does well at AI and Charleston , that doesn`t mean she will go far at RG . Different surfaces

miffedmax
Mar 11th, 2008, 12:36 AM
Paris is the next Slam. Planning for it makes sense, especially since that's the one she wants most.

It's not like this would be great hardcourt experience for the US Open, what with Paris and Wimby in between.

I think the schedule makes sense, although I think that New York is still her best chance for a major.

Corswandt
Mar 11th, 2008, 12:52 AM
comparing lena's physical attributes to petrova :tape:

That's one reason I didn't mind her not doing IW--she's in enough events leading up to Paris anyway, although I must agree with Ollie, Petrova is and never was anywhere close to Elena in physical fitness.

Remember what happened the last time Lena played many weeks in a row (2007 USO series): played four consecutive weeks, collapsed at the New Haven SF, with visibly not a drop left in the tank, both physically and mentally, then went on to self destruct against Bammer in the 3R of the USO.

Terrible on clay ---> this apllies to basically every player on the WTA Tour apart of Henin. Elena doesn´t lose nothing trying to have a good preparation before RG on even if she is "terrible" , the whole WTA Tour is terrible

Although , I don´t see any relation between the green quick stuff and red slow stuff. If she does well at AI and Charleston , that doesn`t mean she will go far at RG . Different surfaces

I agree with both your points. The only women's match not featuring Henin that I saw last year in which actual claycourt tennis was played was Garbin d. Pennetta in Rome. And green clay is pretty much a hardcourt one can slide on.

Lena's reasoning probably goes along the lines of: Sharapova is shit on clay, it's the sisters' least favourite surface, and of those more at ease in it, Jankovic has been playing zombie tennis since mid '07, Ivanovic is her bitch and Kuznetsova is beatable, which leaves Henin. I just don't think this offsets the fact that Lena's game is unsuited to clay. Being a baseline grinder doesn't necessary translate to claycourt success.

I mean, I think you and I have discussed her on clay in the past, and we both agree she's terrible on it (or so I remember), but if she can fight like she did in Dubai, she can maybe make a final at one of the clay events she's entered, possibly even win it. Paris is the slam she wants to win most, I say let her try as hard as she can. Although my question is why you find it so misguiding.

See paragraph above.

Dont anyone ever compare Petrova to Elena, there is simply no comparison, physically or otherwise between that feeble, dour faced whining coward Petrova and Elena.

Lenas schedule seems ok to me, plenty of areas to pick up points, Lenas main problem has been heat, thats why she threw the towel in at New Haven, not from playing to many matches.

We will simply have to see.

Bit quiet in here tonight, no Xenophobia, suggested genocide or anything, no ones even bitched about the Vol2 thing or the fact that France continues to exist..

Come on guys, youre slacking..... ooooh almost forgot, got some stats for Ludwig.

In 2000, the color of the roll of asswipe in Lenas hotel was a gentle shade of pink, but in 2001 it was blue. In 2003 (Lenas breakout year) the bum fodder was white but in 2004 it was a dirty grey color.
Now, in 2005, not a great year for Lena, the hotel had in fact totally run out of shitter roll and resorted to kitchen towel instead, but in 2006 and 2007 pink was once again the predominant color..

Hmm I wonder what all this means for Lenas chances in 2008 then eh??

I posted this in Edem, its a small dictionary of British slang terms to help our friends from the Colonies etc understand them..

Knackered = Means Either something is broken (Its Knackered) or Tired ( I'm Knackered) can be replaced with 'fucked'

Bollocks = Slang term for the testicles, used in many ways (its bollocksed) or (you are talking total bollocks) or as a simple expletive ( BOLLOCKS!!)

Wank = Slang term for self gratification of a sexual manner, used as an insult ( You wanker!!) or as an expresion of tiredness ( I'm feeling wanked!)

Bint = Slang term for 'woman' similar to 'broad' or 'wench'

Gurt= Old English country term for 'big' such as (Lena has gurt muscles or Lenas gurt) can be combined with Bint (Lenas a gurt bint)

Bugger = An old Expletive ( BUGGER!!) or what happens if you drop the soap in the prison showers ( he got buggered from behind)

most of these words can also be combined..as in the following..

"I watched a match with Elena and she was buggering about and bolocksed up the set, the gurt bint then managed to win, leaning us all knackered and completed wanked out"

Hope this all helps

I knew Elena cried out that she hated her serve during the FO F. I didn't know she cried literally in the post-match interview when the journalists were pestering her about her serve. That's rough.

I find out something new every day.

I have to admit that there for a while after that match I was seriously thinking of jumping the SS for the gunboat Myskina. I mean, she was my second favorite and Elena had just humiliated herself.

Then I saw my poor baby girl crying, and I totally melted. Haven't ever wavered since.

Changing the matches slightly and heading over to "angry" Lena instead, I still remember that 04 YEC where Lena got pissed and tossed her racket to one side, of course being Lena and with Lena being rather a strong girl, it acheived near escape velocity before ending up well into the crowd and almost taking out a poor dude, whereupon he then had to hand it back to a rather sheepish looking Lena, who was then bollocked by the ump and given a racket abuse violation.

Was kinda funny to see, Lena was shocked at where it ended up and I had never seen her lose it like that before, Lenas a gentle thing most of the time, but she can and does lose her temper.

I'll make a thread here or on the official forum the closer it gets to Charleston about any questions you all want asked + my sightings and talks with Elena/other players. Unlike cap'n I can basically see her every day she's here.

This is of course if I don't go into cardiac arrest upon looking at the incredible beauty and power of Elena.

I need to brush up on my Russian, I'll be telling her what to do from the stands if she's losing. How do you say "Hit more to her backhand!"?

In your opinion, which is the difference between to play an exho and practice ?
Usually in practice a woman player plays with a man. So an injury can happen playing a practice match or an exho, in Elena's case injury was because of an idiot of trainer not because exho.

In my opinion an exho, close to the place she plays the tournament is a good thing to practice, having fun and put in a pocket a fat check

Lena serves very well in practices , Lena in exhos serves at her usual level. Huge difference

Nah, but seriously , even Sampras has lost 6-0 in practices against some mug player. Practices are 10 times less serious than an exho , and exhos are 10 times less serious than a real match

great interview in french with some interesting quotes: http://www.grandchelem.net/mon_weblog/2008/03/elena-dementiev.html

and here is the translation of ROCKETMAN84 from the forum of the official site:

The latest contributor to our big study entitled 'Female Tennis', Elena Dementieva has also had to confront the criticisms put forward by Wilander's survey. This is the moment for the biggest Francophile of all the Russians on the circuit to pay tribute to the complete tennis of Justine Henin and Amelie Mauresmo, well the Amelie Mauresmo of 2006. Equally this interview offers an interesting insight on the small problem of weight among the women of the WTA: for the girls, when one is stressed out, one eats sugar! And what is wrong with that?

Female tennis, is it as spectacular as the male version?

It's a difficult question. First of all because i am a woman and i like being one of them so i'm always going to take the side of the women! There are some very beautiful matches between the men and some which are very spectacular amongst the women. But i think that there is more dramatic tension in women's matches. Nobody can predict who is going to win and you never know the exact moment when the match will change. As a result, i think that the spectators appreciate that more in the women's matches. When you have a favourite on the men's circuit, they will win 99 percent of the time, that is not the case on the women's circuit.

You speak of dramatic tension, but since the defeat of Hingis by Graf in Paris, there no longer seems to me to be a marked difference in the attitude of the girls on court. Are the girls too timid?

I don't agree with you. We have so many different personalities on the circuit, a variety of styles. Sharapova is always very focused and very aggressive on the court or there is Serena Williams who is very difficult to play against because she has such a big aura around her when she is on court. Ok it's true that there are no bad girls like you can have bad guys, but do we really have a need for this?

Last year Mats Wilander heavily criticised female tennis whilst saying that this brand of tennis was too rigidly uniform, with girls camped on the baseline and that girls don't have a plan B when plan A doesn't work. What do you think of this?

I think that in reality for most of the time there isn't a plan B for the girls. They like playing their own way. If a player is aggressive, she's going to adopt an aggressive game until the end of the match. And besides i don't think this is completely illogical, you play your game. Everyone has their own style of play and it's true that often there is a lack of variation. But it's very nice to see someone like Justine Henin or Amelie Mauresmo who have a lot of strokes in their racquet, who are able to vary their game all the time and who can make the difference with a single stroke.

But for example, Maria Sharapova won the Australian Open whilst charging to the net (really? ). Is this the future of women's tennis?

Without a doubt. It is what one has to do. It is necessary to shorten the rally, it is so much harder to finish the points at the back of the court. If you want to play against top ten girls, you don't have a choice, it is necessary to charge the net, it is necessary to do different things, to create your game. In addition this allows you to conserve energy for upcoming matches. If you win the match in question of course. (Laughs).

So why aren't there more volleyers?

Because the girls are very afraid of the passing shot. When you go to the net and your opponent passes you, it's horrible (laughs). You have constructed the point, you have taken the risk and you find yourself at net without touching the ball. One is afraid to go there. On the male circuit, they don't have this fear there. Even if they lose the point, they keep trying and trying until they are satisfied with the results. Us, we try to stay on the baseline, it is more comfortable. And then i have the impression that as the girls play deeper, they pass better.

What do you think of the fact that Lindsay Davenport was able to stop playing, have a baby and return to win 2 tournaments on the circuit?

That is really unbelievable. I don't know why she did that, but it is necessary to recognise the enormity of this. It almost doesn't surprise me that she was able to make her comeback and play at a very good level. It is a force of nature!

What do you want to say? That it is a unique player or that female tennis.....(she cuts in)

has a mediocre level? (laughs). But it is a very good question! It is a very special player, very strong. Given that her groundstrokes are very heavy, she didn't need to change much in her game. She can win a point in 2, 3 strokes. Thus i don't think that she has required that last level.

What do you think of the retirement of Kim Clijsters and the announcement from Nicole Vaidisova who has explained that her plan is to play only until the age of 25 because tennis is not her entire life?

I don't like this way of thinking because you can never know what you will be able to do in the future. You can hurt yourself or others and it is very difficult to see what change in plans the planets have in store for you(?? ). For Kim, i know that she was tired of playing because she was chained to a lot of competitons. And her way of playing was very physical, she said to herself "no that is enough, my body can no longer follow (this schedule)". I think that she would have been able to play longer but it is her choice.

Can you give me an example of a particularly spectacular match in 2007 or 2008?

The Final of the Masters between Sharapova and Henin. I think that was the best match of the year.

Do you think that there is a weight problem among the players?

I think that the players have a very particular relationship with stress and they have a tendency to manage this with sugary things. But it is also because of this that i like tennis, it is less important if you are delicate or sturdy, small or big you have the chance to win.

Now that the stadiums are full, and that television regularly features women's matches, why aren't the women paid more than the men?

We say that at this level of prize money we are already well advanced, to the point where henceforth it is equal. It remains the case that the men play longer and that in the end prize money is perhaps more a question of quantity than of quality....

I Find men to be hideous stupid things mostly (Inc me  ) so would rather see the girls, unless of course its Kuznetsova or Schiavone playing, then you may as well be watching ugly hairy assed tennis.

Why do some harp on about this "weight" problem in the Womens game? Theres like 2 girls I think of who have a weight problem, Bartoli and Kuznetsova, they are both carrying more than they need ,but they are hardly both bloaters and its hardly an epidemic, for the best part, most of the girls today are very good atletes and in excelent shape, they are taller and stronger than they used to be and older players like McEnroe wouldnt be anywhere near as physically strong s the likes of our Dear Lena, Serena, Venus etc, even in his prime he looked less athletic.

Sure theres some hefty girls, but not all the guys are honed athletes either, every sport has a few who re not exactly in great shape, but it doesnt always stop them doing well and I fail to see this army of wobbling, hugely obese female players than the male reporters keep going on about.

Its the age old problem of mens egos, they cant stand the fact that some females are better than them, and it bothers them terribly.

great interview in french with some interesting quotes: http://www.grandchelem.net/mon_weblog/2008/03/elena-dementiev.html

and here is the translation of ROCKETMAN84 from the forum of the official site:

While waiting for the Miami draw, just to look back on previous success, one thing that stuck out for me in Elena's performance at Dubai was her calmness in the final set and trusting her serve. 6-2 final set is nice and convincing. However I read on tennisreporters that Elena has a shoulder injury (I am optimistic that this was just a reason to not play IW and that she is resting her shoulder and tweaking her serve motion to gain even better efficiency.

Secondly, Elena played very good aggressive tennis in that final. The FH is starting to pack some oopmh and against Sveta that isnt easy.

Elena seems to be maturing and seasoning well as a tennis player. She is slowly but surely achieving her goals. Gold medal seems to be her key prize. Although looking at her clay schedule, anyone else see that RG also seems to be a target?

Good luck to her this year! :)
