Jankovic determined to break Henin jinx
By Sanjay Rajan

BANGALORE, India, March 5 (Reuters) - Serbia's Jelena Jankovic is confident she can break her 0-9 losing streak against Justine Henin and seriously challenge the Belgian world number one this year.

The 23-year-old Jankovic, ranked fourth in the world, had a breakthrough 2007 in which she won four tour titles, reached four other finals and the French Open semi-final.

She also reached the Australian Open semi-finals in January, but is yet to beat Henin, who has won all nine of their meetings.

"Last year, almost the whole year, I was number two in the race and number three in the rankings," Jankovic told Reuters.

"So I was very close, and the player who was in front of me was Justine Henin.

"She was the better one, I beat everybody else last year except her," she said in an interview at the Bangalore Open, where she is top seed.

"(But) this year is a new year, and everything starts from the beginning, from zero."

The powerful Serbian beat American multiple grand slam winner Serena Williams in the Australian Open quarter-finals before falling to Russia's Maria Sharapova.

TARGETING SLAM
Jankovic wants to play fewer tournaments in 2008 to prepare herself better for a first grand slam victory and also wants to find a good travelling coach.

"These are the best years of my career coming up. I just turned 23, I am more mature and I've some experience on the tour.

"The last year was a great year for me, I finished number three in the world. Hopefully this year I can have a better year.

"I think my time will come sooner or later, I think I have the potential to do that," she said.

"Being three times in the semi-finals, I hope to add new things to my game, keep improving and hopefully I'll do it," said the Serb, who also reached the last four at the 2006 U.S. Open.

Jankovic played 97 singles matches last year, but the busy schedule took its toll on her fitness, leading to injury-related retirements at tournaments.

"I'll try and do that (cut down matches) this year," she said. "Last year was a good learning experience. I never played that much in my entire career. And I won so many matches. This I don't think I can keep up so much."
Jankovic said she was struggling to find a suitable coach.

"I was in a trial period with a coach," she said. "I am still looking for a good coach because I believe that will really help me achieve my full potential.
"All the good coaches are already taken or the ones who are not, maybe they don't want to travel," she said. "It's very, very difficult."

seems like this year could be the year jj gets a win over henin, as henins form has been very suspect. i sense she has a good chance to do it at miami as henin is never comfortable playing there.

Will she be world number one? No.

She is being over ambitious, she should not focus on other players but just try to be the best JJ she can be otherwise her desire to beat Justine will be counter-productive.She will end up like Roddick who became obssessed with beating Roger and forget the other players.I think she is going to be pushed out of the top four by pova soon

Might have to do with the fact she doesn't consider her much of a threat anyways regardless of their H2H.

I see you are in a rather naughty mood today Mr Dexter. Obviously had some "bedroom olympics" last night.

Anyway: when Ms Jankovic does eventually reach her first GS final, she will perform rather better than the two efforts from your squeaky fav.

I think she'll beat Justine... but I dont think she'll be #1... At least not this year....

AcesHigh
Mar 6th, 2008, 05:42 PM
She can do it. Honestly, anyone can end the year #1 in 2008 it seems. Henin no longer seems invincible(so far at least) and Sharapova has never reached two slam finals in the same year in her career so I really don't expect her to dominate. Venus and Serena aren't doing too well.

So Ivanovic, Jankovic, Sharapova, Henin, Venus and even Serena.. I can see any of these players reaching #1 this year.

...Maybe it's just me, but shouldn't one atleast reach a Grand Slam final, before such blanket talk of being #1, especially since the ones ahead(and behind), have?

It's okay to Dream, but when entertaining the thought of over-taking one of the most Dominant players in the last decade, I would Hope that you place yourself in the position as a contender first!:tape:

That's ridiculous IMO.. Jankovic has ALMOST beaten Henin several times. She has gone toe-to-toe with her. And Jankovic has just had bad luck with draws. Look at her losses in the last 6 slams (Sharapova, Venus, Bartoli, Henin, Serena, Henin).. IMO she could/should have won both matches at USO(2006&2007).

So Jelena is someone on the "brink". She's a serious challenger to the top if she can just find the form she lost somewhere last fall.

For me, that statement means more that she has beaten most girls that she hadn't before ; the only one left being Justine.

Simplicity.

I thought maybe she was deteremined to be the first player to ever play in 52 tournaments in one year.

Jelena puhlease! Anyone can beat Henin now. She's no longer a top ten player. You need to focus on beating Sharapova and Ivanovic

I wouldn't be surprised if JJ did beat Justine.

Last year in Doha, Justine barely beat an injured JJ, but that's because Justine was playing pity party tennis. :o

I think Jankovic is fooling herself a little bit here. She seems to think that the only thing btwn her and no.1 and slams is Justine.
hrmm....There's another ginormous obstacle in the form of Sharapova. Also there's the fact that on their day there's a lot of girls in the top 20 who could beat her. I think she could pull a Myskina though and win at one of the slams...maybe even Wimbledon if the draw falls in place and she catches some big names on bad UE filled days.

Are you serious? There is no one outside of Henin who has Jankovic's number. She is capable of beating Sharapova as she showed on her worst surface and Sharapova's best at Birmingham last year.

Like I said, Jankovic can win a slam in 2008, but it definitely won't be Wimbledon. It would have to be RG or USO if she can return to the form she had last year.

I think Jankovic would have to improve her serve by a couple of notches. She needs more of a serving weapon to start out points on the offense against Justine. All the players who have beaten her have done one of these three points:

1. Used a serve and a weapon (Sharapova, S. Williams in Miami)

2. Outhit her (Bartoli in the third set at Wimbledon, Sharapova)

3. Used their variety to mess up her variety (Schiavone in Dubai, Mauresmo during the Eastbourne final and when she defeated Justine at Wimbledon).

JJ can't necessarily outhit Justine...she's got good hands at net when she wants to, and a competent slice, so she really would have to rely on her serve, which she doesn't have too much of right now, and her down the line backhand which is an absolutely gorgeous shot.

If Jankovic served slightly harder or with more spin, she'd be able to give Justine more trouble.

if she didn't play as much as she is, she would be in better shape. And would have a better shot at beating henin. Why the heck is she playing in bangalore??? she better not play amelia island, strasbourg, or birmingham this year either. Focus on tier 1's and GS's!!!!
