Anna Kournikova. I want to believe she is coming back, to be one of the best players on tour. It would be the best thing to EVER happen to women's tennis as far as the sponsors are concerned. A new coach, a rising ranking, and some nice victories show promise. But I can't help but wonder if we are making to much out of her recent wins? She beat Anna Smashnova (revenge), but the Israelite has been playing very bad recently, despite success early this year. She beat Prakusya (a nobody), and Stevenson (who is in a slump). And she pushed Venus more than anyone at the BotWC, but still lost in straight sets. I can't tell if these results are great or average.

Anyway, congrats Anna, because nobody expected her to beat Alex this badly! That's OK, Alex needs to stop talking about "when" she will win Grand Slams anyway, so way to humble her. And with Seles gone, Anna has a nice draw...

Great win for Anna Kournikova tonight :D

WOW, I did not know Anna Smashnova was playing very badly recently.    She won today over a very good hardcourt player (and this player beat Justine Henin on hardcourt who is an outstanding player).

Congrats to both Anna S. and Anna K.!!!!!!!

I can only feel sorry for Alex. To lose the way she did today sounds like it really was not only devastating but humbled her too.

I just hope this streak of bad luck does not hurt her confidence. She has so much talent I just wish somehow it would come out of her in full force.

He has actually posted Alexandra Stevenson's record, not Anna Smashova's, easy mistake, since they have the same initial

Um, Eta Psi, next time could you distinguish which AS you mean? In this thread we have been discusing two (Alexandra Stevenson and Anna Smashnova) and thus it is Reasonable for for Phillip to get confused. Also, Alex won a match in Birmingham 6-2; 7-5 (I can't remember who she beat though).

Anna Smashnova's real record from Roland Garros on goes like this.

1R loss to Schiavone in Paris. 4&2.
Then she won a minor title on clay in Vienna, losing just one set total, and beating the likes of Schnyder and Tulyaganova.
Lost in the first round of Eastborne and Wimbledon.
Dropped both her Fed Cup matches. (although she was against Lindsay and Monica.)
Lost 1R to Anna in Stanford.

She won today over Irvin, but yeah, I'd say she's been slumping.

Well, whether or not Anna K's opponent's were tough is almost besides the point. Anna has really not been able to beat anyone of late, so these recent wins speak volumes. No, she is not ready to beat the top 10, but at least she is actually playing WELL and competitively and winning some matches.

Wynne a nobody :( :( Grrrrrr...... wait until you see her forehand live!

and i saw this match live, Anna K was killing Alex. One of the best match i've seen from Anna. She has lots of combination on her shots. Her backhand is the strongest i think, volleys just wow!! drop shots, lobs were making people gone crazy! her forehand was a litlle shaky. And yes, serve is her weakness, but she has the potential to improve it, she did hit a 105 mph serve aswell. Return?? damn she was on fire!!!!!

not to mention where she lost 23 out of 41 games played... and not against the best playersm btw

So I wish my fellow Anna fans would calm down a bit... It's a good win, but it really has to be supported by some more wins...

Regardless of whether or not Alex is in a slump, NOBODY has beaten Alex by a score of 6-0 6-1. Not hingis, Davenport, Seles, or any of the other top players. Even if Alex's game turned to s*** out there, it's still tough to beat her 6-0 6-1, simply because she is so powerful. The fact that Anna is now starting to win matches that she SHOULD be winning, which has not been the case this year, is a sign of her improving game and the ability of Solomon as a coach.

Still, I can't figure out who this speaks more of. Is Anna really back or is Alexandra just playing attrociously lately?

"Still, I can't figure out who this speaks more of. Is Anna really back or is Alexandra just playing attrociously lately?"

That is the same thing I'm thinking Bradshaw. I'm not trying to diminish anna's win especially since I did not see the match --- no t.v. coverage! But how much was Anna really "on" and how much was Alexandra "off?" I'm not a fan of either but I'll usually cheer for them as long as they are not playing V or S. I think both of them get their unfair share of criticism in the press and to some extent on this board. The press is trying to make jokes out of them. I hope both of them starting winning some titles to shut them up.

All this fuss over a Kournikova victory you would think she just defeated someone in the top 30 :)
