1930 - Betty Nuthall
1940 - Alice Marble
1950 - Margaret O. duPont
1960 - Darlene Hard
1970 - Margaret S. Court
1980 - Chris Evert
1990 - Gabriela Sabatini
2000 - Venus Williams

It's a ridiculous amount of money -- talk about overpaid.

Since this was pre-open era, I'd imagine $0 LOL

1970 - Margaret S. Court ($7500)
1980 - Chris Evert ($46000)
1990 - Gabriela Sabatini ($350000)

The winners' paychecks are in brackets :)

You do have to keep in mind about the i-word ---> inflation.

But I agree, I reckon there should be some ceiling on the prizemoney. It can't keep going up like this forever.

I say let it ride. It makes it all the more exciting!

Why is it bad that these players are being paid so much???? Baseball, basketball, and football players are being paid a lot more, and their money is guaranteed, so they don't even have to earn it! I say let this increase keep going!!! After all, a report done a year or so ago said that the US Open made more money for New York than the Mets or Yankees combined in their season!!

As long as there is a desire for the sport that funds the prize money, it will keep going up and up. :)

I'm happy because it shows that a woman can earn $900,000 in 2 weeks at a sporting event....what other sport can say that? :D

Well a certain "Andre Agassi" has even expressed that tennis players are overpaid. I'm not saying they should be amateurs, but why not just slow down the rate of growth in the prizemoney. It's been climbing $50,000 every year!

English soccer clubs have been struggling because their players are ridiculously overpaid. I heard about this, but I don't know how big the problem is. Soccer is a big sport. I just hope tennis wouldn't face the same problems.

Most of the slam winners don't care about the money anyway, it's the titles that count.

As long as people continue making money because these athletes train hard, show up and do what they do...

Pay 'em accordingly! No cap, because if you profit, they should too. Agree with BR, let it ride!
