Against Dushevina today Mirza hit a 143km/h forhand!

What is the record for fastest forhand by a lady? - I'm guessing it was Pierce or Ivanovic

And what is the fastest backhand?

there would be alot faster than that.

think of all the times when someone serves a "should be ace" and the player sticks the racket out and it comes back with interest... lol

interesting thread...

Serena hit a monster return against Mauresmo at the '03 French Open. She's ripped a whole slew, as Venus and Sharapova have, as well.

Yeah I think it'd probably be Serena for both the bh and fh.

Three Davids hold the record for the fastest recorded shot with former Sheffield Wednesday striker David Hirst claiming top spot, hitting the crossbar at a whopping 114mph against Arsenal at Highbury in September 1996.

David Beckham's 97.9mph effort against Chelsea on February 1997, is second while David Trezeguet's thunderbolt at Old Trafford on March 1998, was recorded at 96mph, putting him third on the list.

However, the Football Association's historian David Barber insists there is no official record.

He said: "Some players in history have been renowned for the power of their shooting – Charlie 'Cannonball' Fleming for Sunderland in the Fifties, Cliff Holton for Crystal Palace in the 60s and Peter 'Hotshot' Lorimer for Leeds in the 70s.

"BBC's Record Breakers programme featured an 87 mph shot by Nicky Summerbee in 1994 that was claimed as the hardest ever.

"Manchester United tested the power of Paul Scholes, Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo with a special measuring gun and they were all around 70 mph."

I remember a forehand of Ana Ivanovic at 105 m/h (169 km/h).
140 km/h can be seen often because many players have such shots. Serena, Venus, Henin, Sharapova, Petrova etc. have regularly shots in the region 92 - 98 m/h

Dokic had an amazing backhand in the beginning of the year in Brisbane. I will try to upload it.

Sorana hit a forehand that was around 95mph from right on the baseline vs JJ at the FO which is much more impressive than killing a short ball. :p

The WTA had a power index for the first four events of 2009.
------------
The Power Index is the average maximum hitting speed of any player judged by maximum: a) 1st Serve Speed; b) 2nd Serve Speed; c) Forehand; d) Backhand; e) 1st Serve Return; f) 2nd Serve Return; and g) Smash.
*Only calculates players appearing on center court.

2009 CUMULATIVE AFTER FOUR EVENTS
1 Samantha Stosur (AUS) 100.01 MPH
2 Jelena Dokic (AUS) 94.88 MPH
3 Serena Williams (USA) 94.67 MPH
4 Ana Ivanovic (SRB) 92.94 MPH
5 Tamira Paszek (AUT) 92.84 MPH
6 Nadia Petrova (RUS) 92.6 MPH
7 Dinara Safina (RUS) 92.31 MPH
8 Venus Williams (USA) 92.04 MPH
9 Svetlana Kuznetsova (RUS) 91.64 MPH
10 Gisela Dulko (ARG) 90.74 MPH

------------
For comparison:
Gael Monfils has the Fastest Forehand ever clocked at 118.1 mph or 190 km/h, against Marcos Baghdatis at the 2007 Australian Open. Although it has been noted by many that Andre Agassi who yields, arguably, the greatest forehand ever, has hit with considerably more "pace" than Gaël Monfils but was never "clocked" at the appropriate occurrences due to the lack of technological advancement in tennis during Andre's more "prime years" (From:http://www.absoluteastronomy.com/topics/Forehand)

The power index is useless for including service speed.
