Good luck Makiri! Let's put a stop to this trend of winning the 1st set, having a lead in the 2nd set, and end up blowing the match in the end crap!!! YOU ARE BETTER than that Makiri! If you want to prove to you yourself and your coach that you can reach the Top 10-15 rank, YOU and only YOU will have to step up your game Makiri and STOP with the mental lapses!:fiery: Now go out there and UNLEASH HELL MAKIRI!!! UNLEASH HELL!!!

Tough looking section for Makiri. I really feel if she can beat Alona then it can be a good step in the right direction and restore her confidence for the next match. I hope that Makiri can get it back going in the right direction in Dubai. We need to see her show the form she showed in Melbourne.

I've seen only third set.

It seemed like she has some real problem. It was injury indeed making her tough game.

Respect for Maria for 6(sic!) deuces and 4 matchballs defended when 1-5 in last set.

She committed too many the same mistakes. After that she's gone frustrated. I believe it was all provoked only by this unfortunate injury...

Poor Maria.

Hopefully the injury is alright. Not upset about this loss.  Hope she's alright firstly.

This is a bitter pill for Makiri to swallow. It's the third time this year she lost a match in this excruciatingly painful way. Now, I think it's going to replay in the back of her mind everytime she enters the 2nd set with a 1st set lead in the match. With the injury timeout, was her knee acting up again??? Btw, do they still allow oncourt coaching on the WTA tour??? If they did, Coach Van Harpen should have given Makiri a good pep talk before the beginning of the 2nd & 3rd set. This could possibly be a lingering mental problem that Makiri will need to overcome. Sports psychologist??? I don't think Makiri would accept the help because it would be seen as a sign of weakness not only to her, but her fellow compatriots. I personally think it would help her though.

Another Maria meltdown. :( :o If Maria was blowing leads and losing matches to top players it would be more acceptable to me than it is. I think her career is in trouble because she has never learned how to close out matches she should win. Maria makes Anna Kournikova look like she was a mentally tough player. I don't know how she can ever recover from so many blown matches in her career. It's alarming and unfortunate because it looked like she was really making progress under Eric Van Harpen last year. Maybe Maria's tank job to Daniela Hantuchova in Melbourne did more damage than we thought. Or it could be the devastating cumulative effect of all her blown matches in her 5 year career. I've been a tennis fan a long time and I've never seen a player consistently blow matches she should win the way Kirilenko has. And this lingering problem with her left knee doesn't help matters.

Clearly, Maria isn't over her Aussie Open collapse. She has been in the same situation twice since then and has collapsed. It is a mental thing. She gets in a position to win and one bad thing happens and then she starts thinking back to the Hantuchova match and it is all downhill from there. Maybe she needs to see a sports psychologist. This isn't something that is going to go away until she closes out a match. I have been following Maria since she was 15 and have been through some really low points in that time. This might be the worst of all. It was frustrating when she couldn't put 2 wins in a row together. It was frustrating when she kept losing in the 3rd round of the Grand Slams. These collapses are the worst though. She has had breakthroughs with Van Harpen as her coach. He got her to believe in herself enough to win a tournament in the fall. He got her to believe in herself enough to finally get past the 3rd round of a Grand Slam. Now, she is consistently collapsing. Now, Van Harpen has to get her to believe in herself all over again. Now, we'll see how good he really is

We post about mental problem several times here. It is going deeper and deeper. Maria loses matches if she finds one small thing doesn't fit her.

One of Polish tennis experts described Maria as little proud girl who knows how to win but if something on court starts to go a wrong way she throws out her toys and loses.

Sometimes I wonder how bad the knee really is. When she is doing well, it doesn't seem to bother her at all. When things start to go bad, it hurts again. Sometimes I think it is just an excuse for Maria. She needs to learn to battle better. When she first came on tour, Maria was a battler. She always fought to the end. She needs to get back to that mentatlity. She needs to put these collapses out of her mind. She won't succeed again until she does. If it takes going to a sports psychologist, so be it.

Krzysiu.
Feb 26th, 2008, 07:35 AM
We've seen Maria the battler in last points vs Bondarenko. 6 deuces, 4 defended matchballs. It all was to late.

Labamba
Feb 26th, 2008, 01:19 PM
This latest 'collapse' of Maria seemed injury related to me, she was much slower than usual in the 3rd set and couldn't hit her forehand properly. Partly it's mental of course, but she needs to be 100% fit to compete at this level. I hope she gets these problems sorted out soon

You have to start battling before the last points

You speak the truth. I only hope Maria's coach and parents tell her the same things. But I doubt it.

I do not think it's an issue of Maria having to fight for more points. She already does. She did look troubled 6-3 2-0 and was not her usual self. I saw the full match and there was an obvious injury because Masha could just not move very well at all.

Yes, you have to fight in every match and she tried to. This injury appeared when she was winning.

Labamba
Feb 28th, 2008, 02:12 PM
doubles with Agnes seems like a waste of time at the moment, they can't get a win anywhere :(

Maria, now go to Bangalore asap and maybe that special Indian atmosphere can help you find your form again
