Thanks to Alley for pointing this out.

LL Jennifer Hopkins will take Monica's place.

Meanwhile, fourth-seeded Monica Seles, ranked fourth in the world, withdrew from the singles competition because of an inflammation in the arch of her right foot. She was injured during a practice Saturday.

...

Even with the loss of Seles, the tournament includes several highly ranked players including Venus Williams, Jennifer Capriati, Jelena Dokic, Kim Clijsters and Lindsay Davenport.

She injured herself on saturday after a practice, the picture you posted had nothing to do with this injury.

I doubt she made her foot inflamed within one day of practice. This has to have happened over time. I have a feeling that playing in hot conditions on hard courts has taken a bit of a toll. But hopefully it heals quickly so that Monica can defend some points!!

P.S.--This could be why she wasn't moving so well at Wimbledon and/or Bank of the West...

I feel in agreement with many of you Seles fans. Martina had ongoing problems with her feet and I think has also had some pain. If Hingis fans dare to suggest that her injuries may have had something to do with some of her worse matches we are lampooned and I think Seles fans have every right to wonder about Monica's losses too. :)

I hate to take anything away from Monica, and I wish her the best, but this is good for Anna if she gets past Alexandra (personally, I hope she kicks her butt up and down the courts!) then she certainly has a better chance of getting past a LL than Monica Seles. Then it's quarterfinals, and I don't know who (too lazy to check), but I hope Anna can get something going. Again, hope Monica's OK.

Personally I don't want her playing too much at all if she is hurt. I say stay away, and just play one warm up to the US Open. Remember what happened last year when she peeked too soon.

You just have to wonder whether this is going to end up being an extended period of absence, given her past history with this foot arch problem. Was it the same right foot giving her problems last time?

Jennifer HOPKINS is really a LL (LUCKY LOSER)

eventhough she didn't make it into the Main Draw, but she doesn't have to play 1st Round match (BYE).....

Very Lucky, indeed!

I couldn't agree with you more, Dawn Marie...!

Monica, take care of your foot! (and damn the points race for contributing to players' injuries:mad: )

It is great news for Anna. Congratulations to you for finding the silver lining in this cloud! To answer your question, anna would only Face ELENA DEMENTIEVA (well at least she is seeded to make the QF) in the Quarters! I don't know about you but I see Anna making the semis and giving a match to Jenny Cap! We all know what that means: Anna on TVeeee, Anna on TVeeeee, Nananananananana Anna on TVeeeee! :p

I have a feeling that she'll play Montreal if she's healed quickly; Pilot Pen if she wants another week!

Well will Monica get fined like Agassi for withdrawing so late?????? Nope. Why? The WTA does not know how to market their product at ALL! I think that Coca Cola or someother corporation should start to run the tour as a for profit industry (but if the girls don't like how they are running it, they can fire the corporation at the years end) That way there would be incentive for the purses to swell to where they should be, and cause popularity to rise.

wasn't this the same foot injury that caused her to get a double bagel from Hingis a couple of years ago? i hope she gets it treated properly.

This is very sad news for me.

I hope that Monica recovers soon, but even more I hope that she recovers properly before returning to the tour.
