With the Williams sisters winning everything lately, there's been lots of talk about "boring" tennis...who do you think is the most boring player to watch??

My pix: Anna K... soooo predictable
Andy Roddick...see Anna K!

Lindsay and Conchita but only when they have an off day and seem to be half hearted, Martina was the same for a part last year!
I don't like that, I like to see players give the impression they give it their all and try hard to win!
when a player does that, I am satisfied:)

hmm K

I know that Ivanisevic is all about his serve but you can hardly call him boring.

That final and his semi at Wimbly 2001 were out of this world. Also, Goran is a bit of a nutter, he's always likely to do something unexpected. Put it this way, how many other players have had to retire half way through a match because they smashed all their racquets up ? :)

Jelena Dokic, she has to have something added to her game- i just dread seeing her out hit her opponents using the same tactics again. Also, some of the Russian girls such as Myskina and Barabanshikova(if she is Russian and if that's how u spell her name). Whoever calls Martina Hingis boring has no tennis knowledge whatsoever. I know this is opinions, but it's like calling Jordan a bad basketball player. Hingis hits winners that no one on tour could even think of, let alone try. Notice how in the "best match you have ever seen" thread virtually every match was someone against Hingis? Wow some people here are sad, and yes you know who I'm talking about.

Anyway, this seems to be a "pick who you don't like" thread, but I won't go that route. Frankly, I find Jelena Dokic to be boring to watch, and the obvious supsects like Coetzer, etc. But even they are interesting on their best day.

My God it's my opinion, THAT MARTINA HINGIS IS A BORING PLAYER!!! She's one of the most defensive player out there when playing a TOP quality opponent, basically content to get the ball over the net and wait for her opponents to make a ton of errors (which they did), as soon as the BETTER players learn to cut down on their errors she became almost a non-factor. Yes, her game is boring to me and a lot of other people.

sartrista7
Jul 29th, 2002, 09:37 PM
As TBE said, excitement to one person is unutterable boredom to another. I don't find either Hingis or the Williamses dull, but I can see where those who do are coming from.

The ones I *do* find very, very boring: Kim Clijsters and Monica Seles personality-wise (get over this 'nice', 'sweet' thing already! Noce and sweet does not entail interesting or charismatic), and in the men's Tim Henman, Andy Roddick (personality? he's an immature schoolkid, nothing anyone's not seen before) and Pete Sampras.

Game-wise - Amanda Coetzer, Conchita Martinez (tho' I'd watch them if they were playing well against an aggressive player), Alexandra Stevenson when she's off. Men - Ivanisevic, Sampras, Dent, Roddick.

One person's dislike of "nice and sweet" is another person's delight in "grace and class" (charisma and sweetness not being mutually exclusive).

One person's "edgy" is another person's "bitchy"(not interesting, just annoying).

One person's "boring" is another's "thrill"--

One person's "thrill" is another's "yawn"--

This thread proves nothing more than this. What's the point?

Finding a player boring or not finding a player boring has nothing to do with having tennis knowledge. There's an expression in french: "les gouts ne se discutent pas" which roughly translates into "tastes can't be discussed" which is true. One person will find something extremely entertaining while the next person will find it boring .so please don't go insulting people because you don't understand their tastes.

There ought to be two categories, in person, and on tv. On tv, Conchita Martinez is pretty boring. In person, there's no one I like to watch better (and Ronnie will tell you, I like to watch). All those spins and loopy shots that *just* land in, it's art in motion. The woman is an artist, when she's playing well. I just adore her in person. Her game, to me, is the best, not necessarily to win, but to watch. But it's all in the eye of the beholder. I watched two matches with Dokic in person, very boring, hard, flat shots near the lines. Snooze! Nothing for me there, but I'm me, so it's up to the person watching. Monica's angles are good, and you know what, Venus, she's great in person, she's not just all power, I love those arms coming together for a big one with her nice footwork. I'm privileged to have seen many of them. To see Justine hit that backhand, so beautiful, to see Mauresmo wind up and smack one, just as good, Even Elena's backhand (I think?). I love them all. Every player has a great shot if you watch. It's up to the person! But to me, the best is Conchita, the most boring to me is Jelena.

Please, like I need your preaching, there is the PC truth and the truth, and the truth is that everyone that picked Hingis was a Williams fan. Yeah color me surprised, but I'm sure they were being honest and not biased.

Oh and Martina plays SOOOO defensively against the top players, which is why she had 20 winners in her last match against Kim, Daniela, and Venus, and nearly 40 against Seles in Aussie (and more than Seles in their last match). I'll give you her matches against Serena Williams, but is that it? Please, find a better excuse to justify your bias.

Oh, and if you want to talk about opinions, than it is my opinion that anyone who thinks Hingis has a boring game is allergic to an actual tennis court. Right, the world and the boards are full of opinions which you have the right to express and I have the right to disagree with. So if your stomach can't handle an argument than you're on the wrong planet.

And don't worry, I generally don't find Martina boring, except when she is playing like that 4-6 0-6 lost to Serena or that recent lost to Daniela. That is like she is not even trying. She can be interesting, like those matches against Venus.

And I must agree with Celeste, I love watching Conchita play, sometimes. It is amazing the way she uses spin and how she manages to put those balls in play, she is a real spin master, like a magician. But, I only like it when she is 'on' and the match is not more than 2 hours... ;)

i do think Martina is fun to watch, she hits many scary angles,
winners are only for power players, so, consistent is very very important.someone said what she does in a match is make the ball over the net.All the player are doing that thing in a match, the difference are the power and angle.i mean, if she cans make all the ball over the net without error and with angle,it's really hard to do so, especially facing a Williams and capriati, so,personally she is not dull to watch!

Conchita can be fun to watch for a while, but at the end of her matches you're always left wondering where the last 7 1/2 hours went. :)

Any match between Seles and a Veteran-She's-Kicked-Around-For-Ten-Years-And-Beaten-The-Will-To-Live-Out-Of (such as Barbara Rittner) is incredibly boring. Same thing always happens. Monica doesn't really play that well, the other girl just finds a way to lose because she's been psyched out by Invincible Monica, who's no longer around. But really, when you've lost to someone 18946295 times, it's easy to understand how one's confidence can evaporate.

I think Venus and Serena are quite boring. Except when they play each other and put on those exhibitions of high-quality, error-free tennis. :) Maybe if they'd bring back the beads I'd be interested.

Maggie Maleeva. Don't like watching her.

Julie Halard-Decugis too. I know she's retired, but even when I think of her now I'm getting bored.

(What I find amusing about cybelle saying that 'Martina just gets shots back' is that players like Panova and Coetzer are both faster and more consistent, yet clearly Hingis is better. How does that work? Whatever, it just proves my theory that you either have not watched any matches with Hingis or don't know the game of tennis well)

Everyone there, except veronika (?), is a Williams fan. So not to generalize, I'll say it factually. 85.7% of the posters in this thread who think Hingis is "boring" are Williams fans. And if I were to check veronika's post history, perhaps she is one too. I don't know. I'll give her the benefit of the doubt.

So is this a big coincedence that 85.7% of the posters in this thread who think Hingis is "boring" are Williams fans? No, it is rather obvious their bias is speaking, and I see right through them. Is it a coincedence that the popular, controversial players like Hingis and the Williams sisters and Kournikova and Capriati, who are at times annoying but never boring are getting the most votes? No it's not, this thread is a silly, stupid "pick who you don't like" thread, and few people are answering the question in a legit fashion. I'm sure you wouldn't take me seriously if I were to say "Serena and Venus are the most boring", and I'd be hearing how "biased" I am etc. So it works the other way around, I think a Williams fan that calls Hingis boring is kidding themselves and fooling nobody.

o0O0o....bias my ass. It's MY opinion. So even if it is biased...am I not entitled to my opinion? Shit...get over it already. I like Kim Clijsters for instance, but still find her game kinda boring. What the hell is wrong with that? Bottom line is I find Martina Hingis's game and many others boring, and I like Venus Williams. So what? Isn't that what the thread is about? MY opinion on who i find boring as a player? Shit. So what about those that find Venus's game boring? They have a legitimate right to find her game boring? You don't see me slinging shit at them do you? It's THEIR opinion for crying out loud.

Is it a big coincedence? No and of course it makes total sense. Why? Not for the bias reasons you speak of but because the Williams and Martina play totally different games so it makes complete sense that somebody who finds Venus and Serena exciting would find somebody who plays totally opposite, aka Martina, boring.

Is it just me, or does it make sense that someone who liked a given player with a distinct style of play might find someone with the opposite style of play less interesting?

I think this is called a "no-brainer."

Actually, the only players that really bore me are the retired ones who prattle on about how tennis should go back to the way THEY played.

o0O0o
Jul 30th, 2002, 07:27 PM
You make a point that Williams fans find Hingis boring because they play opposite styles. If that is the case, where the hell are all the Davenport fans? The Capriati fans? The ANYONE fans. Angele, welcome to 2002, every player in the top 20 plays a power game that is the opposite of Martina Hingis, yet 85.7% of the people mentioning Hingis are Williams fans.

Clearly, most Williams fans don't like Hingis and most Hingis fans don't like V&S. When a fan of one person calls their rival "boring" their credibility is shot to hell.

But the most boring player of all time is in the ATP Tour and his name is Tim Henman!.

I think i'm the only person in the whole of the Britain who thinks this as everyone here seems to idolise him. Every Wimbledon you can't get away from him and you've gotta put up with millions of his boring interviews & then watch his game which are usually pretty dull unless the opponent does something good.

Unfortunately I'm the only person I know who feels like this so I'll have to put up with this for another few Wimbledon's. I wish we'd focus more on Greg Rusedski, he's MUCH more exciting!.

Actually, I like watching Hingis play. She has one of the most exciting games in the WTA. I am a Williams fan but I have to give credit to Hingis. She is very crafty and those accurate down the line and angled shots are jsut amazing to watch.

Yes! the most boring player to watch is Conchita Martinez. She sucks clay big time!

I also find Dementieva pretty boring to watch. And most of ATP players too.
And yes,I'm a Venus fan too.

Please note that I was wrong when I said anyone who thinks Hingis is boring doesn't know this or that or whatever. I just see ulterior motives for some people. And frankly, I saw a lot of known Williams-haters calling the Williams sisters boring. I don't like either sister, but I would hardly call them 'boring' players.

Most Boring: Any Claycourt Specialist IMHO. Loopy strokes and endless running with no power or even angles is boring boring boring. The men claycourt specialists are worst than the women, because the male power players can't beat them sensless. Thus Albert Costa won the French Open, and the men's tv ratings suffered greatly. Venus and Serena demolished the field (excepting Jennifer Capriati from "the field") and TV ratings soared.

I'd have to say Venus..she's pretty expressionless out there...rarely smiles....she should take some personality tips from Serena who is always animated and smiles a lot!!

Most of the opinions of "boring" players posted are so boring...No explaination of why a particular player was named. LOL! Try offering an explaination to support your opinion.

Great post by Celeste:)

I usually don't defend Conchita Martinez, and I do think her game is "boring" on TV, but live and in person she's wonderful to watch if you actually play tennis. She has variety of spins, placement, and anyone who wants to learn more about what can be done with a ball should watch her. She's a true artist who won't be around much longer. See her while you can.

tennis is never boring if you really love the sport. i may prefer some players over others but it's rare that i find a match boring. of course Pete Sampras puts me to sleep but it's not my fault he can sure insomnia...:o :o

Amanda Coetzer, Anna Smashnova

Tim Henman

I dont think Hingis is boring to watch. She hits angles and a vareity game like no one else. She's good at changing direction of the ball and hitting drop shots out of nowhere. If course that MY opinion. Also, like to watch Conchita also, because it's something different. Those angles. passing shots, and that topspin backhand is great to watch ;)

Didn't someone actually say they find Greg Rusedski exciting? My, I hope that was sarcastic. ;-)

conchita can be exciting but even her fans must admit that she has her days when she rather stays in bed and does nothing more as only hitting a little like saying let me go back to my warm place soon.
no attack to her, I have these days too(but then I am not a player and people don't pay to watch me;))

Probably Lleyton Hewitt, that's why he screams so much to make his matches exciting.
