Has a qualifer in R1. There's a few tough qualifiers in the draw so Maria has to be on her toes. Afterwards, a possible encounter with Nadia Petrova.

I think that the draw isn`t bad for Makiri. If she can play at the same level she showed in the Australian Open, then i can see her getting to the quarterfinals for a very likely meeting against Masha. So hopefully Makiri can take of care in business this upcoming week in Doha.

Not the easiest of draws, but not the worst. She can advance to meet Sharapova if she puts her mind to it. Her mindset is going to be a big key. I'm very interested to see how she responds to her collapse at the Aussie Open. It is an important moment for her. She should beat Makarova & can beat Petrova or Medina-Garrigues if her mind is right. After that, I think Wozniacki will beat Bartoli and advance to the 3rd round.
Hopefully Maria will rebound nicely and have a deep run in this tournament

Not a good result for Maria. This is a match she should've won, but her serve let her down once aagin. She got broken in half of her service games. That is not a good stat at all and you're not going to win too many matches doing that. Maria's play in this tournament has done nothing to convince me that she is over Aussie Open collapse.

That was a major tank job by Maria against Anabel Medina Garrigues after leading 6-2 3-0. It's quite similar to the horrendous loss she had against Daniela Hantuchova at the Australian Open. :( Losing matches like these after dominating for the first set and early in the second set makes me question Maria's guts. I had hoped 2008 would be Masha's best year of her career. But after mentally crippling losses like these 2 I can't see how she can ever have a big year on tour because she loses alot of matches every year that she has control of. It seems like Kirilenko can't shake the bad habit of blowing matches. Losing matches is one thing but blowing matches is another. Every time I've thought Makiri's career was going to take off she goes on losing streaks and chokes matches away. It's sad because she's a good talent and likable girl who can play fine all court tennis when everything is working well for her. I think Eric Van Harpen has done a good job coaching Maria since last summer but he has his hands full with Maria because Makiri makes Daniela Hantuchova look like a mentally tough tennis player. Losing matches to Daniela and Anabel early in the 2008 season isn't alarming to me. But how she lost to Dani and Anabel is alarming. I hope Maria can recover from these 2 devastating early season losses but I have my doubts.

And I question Maria taking a month off after the Australian Open. Doing that cost her whatever good form she had in Melbourne. I think she should have played Antwerp which had a very soft draw. Masha could have done well there. Now the pressure is on Maria to avoid slipping back into a losing rut like she did last fall after playing good tennis for a couple of months after Van Harpen took over as her coach. I still hold out some hope that Maria can have a good 2008. Makiri needs to learn how to close out matches that she has control of. But she's 21 years old and already in her sixth season on the WTA Tour so she will have to work hard to change the way she's lost close matches for her entire career to this point. I hope Masha can improve on this crucial weakness in her game and her mentality. If she can her results will improve significantly.

King Aaron
Feb 21st, 2008, 03:14 PM
I think she needs to re-screw her head. I thought the chokes were over. If she wants to get in the Top 10 she better start winning these matches.

JimM
Feb 21st, 2008, 04:53 PM
Doha: Venus out, Kuzy out, Ana I out, Chaky out and Safina. Why did she not get some match play in before a Tier 1 of all tournies? Antwerp would have been ideal.

What a chance Maria had here. She is not on the MD list for Dubaias far as I can see. So if she is in the qualies, she has one tough gig ahead of her

The rising stars have all past Masha or about too. Caro is in the QF's along with Dominika and Aga. Rightly so

Thanks Spy. I also think Maria should work with a sports psychologist so she can try to overcome blowing matches she has control of. I used to wish the same thing for Anna Kournikova and Elena Dementieva so they could deal with their serving problems which hurt their careers in big matches against power players who would punish their weak serves. But Anna and Elena never worked with a sports psyhcologist and I doubt Maria will either. :(

Good post :yeah: Maria seems to be the type of player that feeds off confidence - if she's feeling happy about her game she plays really well, if not she folds  She needs to really work on trying to get through matches when her game isn't feeling right, something champions manage to do well.

On the positive side, though, this time last year Maria was 5-6 for the season and so far this year she is 6-3. She also got to the 4th round of a major for the first time, so she is heading in the right direction. Her three losses are disappointing ones, however, the Hantuchova and Medina Garrigues ones especially. Perhaps she felt the match was already over and lost her concentration as a result. She needs to remember the match isn't over until the last point is played. It's just so frustrating following her matches because she has a really refreshing game to watch, bags of potential to do well in her career and has a likeable personality. It would be a great shame if she lets her great talent go to waste. Come on Maria, show the tennis world what you've got!!

You mean Dominika as Cibulkova and Aga as Radwańska :tennis:? These two 18-year-olds are really rising stars.

I wonder how did you find out Aga. It is really short form of Agnieszka but in Poland A. Radwańska is known as Isia. :D
