PALO ALTO, California -- Anna Kournikova pulled out of her doubles semifinal match at the Bank of the West Classic on Saturday with an abdominal strain.

Because of the injury, the Russian and her American partner Meghann Shaugnessy were forced to withdraw from their match against top seeds Lisa Raymond and Rennae Stubbs.

Kournikova sustained the injury in practice before her 6-3, 6-4 quarterfinal loss to Venus Williams in the singles event on Friday night.

She aggravated it further during that match and in a subsequent quarter-final doubles victory.

Kournikova will be examined by doctors on Saturday night before a decision can be made concerning her participation in a tournament next week.

The Russian is scheduled to face American Alexandra Stevenson in the first round of the Acura Classic.

I haven't seen Meghan play doubles yet, but, from what I observed at Wimbledon, Chanda Rubin and Anna seemed to be quite a formidable doubles combination.

However, I do not believe the injury that Anna sustained would have prevented VENUS from winning in straight sets.

She played a good match against Venus and now knowing that she was injured ....makes her performance all the more commendable :)
Go Anna K.

With this 60-61 win over Stevenson today at Acura Classic, she seems to be healthy now. What a difference 4 days can make!
