View Full Version : Williams Williams Final

I love Venus & like Serena. If Serena was not Venus sister, I don't think I would like her. As a Venus fan, I'm having a hard time staying a fan of Serena. So I went and checked the stats of their last 3 slams finals.
At the US OPEN last year. Venus serve was around the 120. Serena could not handle it. At this year French & Wimbledon finals, her serve disapeared. She served big all through the tournaments 118-119, then , at the finals droped to 100- 101. Was it nerves? Did any of you guys notice it.? I don't really enjoy their matches with each other, because Venus does not look happy, even when she wins.

Perhaps she was just trying to get more first serves in? I dunno.

let the war begin...

Sorry but you think Serena looks happy when she wins Venus? Do you think she likes to play her sister aswell? Why some people only see Venus' feelings?

Roseie, I feel your pain Dear.... I will never forgot that sad look on Venus's face when she realized that she was serving for the match at the U.S. Open. It broke my heart <sob sob>

It is so painfully obvious that Venus becomes another person when playing her housemate... On the otherhand, I don't think housemate gives a crap who is on the other side of the net. Of course this is just my humble opinion :P

Go Venus!!!

Infin. My heart is still painful, It took me 2 weeks before I could come back on the Web, & read about tennis. The only time I like to see them on court at the same time is in doubles.

Good to see I am not the only one with that feeling. I can't miss a match of a williams, but I love Venus more. I think she is a precious individual, with that deep inner beauty and intelligence. This is the kind of beauty singular individual cannot see. Only very smart people and people with values can perceive her beauty (If you are superficial and ignorant you will never be able to face and admit that beauty). I don't want anything wrong to happen to Serena, but Venus for me is the natural, effortless Star.

I her heart, I think Venus doesn't mind losing to Serena. Serena doesn't want to lose to anyone.

I have only followed Seles career more closely than the Sisters and I agree with those who feel that Serena isn't as broken up when winning as Venus is when they play.

Serena even admits, when they practice, that she cheats when no one is looking (Venus admits that Serena cheats too, Venus also admits that she doesn't mind Serena cheating - which speaks volumes in itself).

By the way, I think that is cute (my little brothers cheated too).

Serena has the heart of a warrior and is blessed with someone in her own home (not trying to start trouble, but I do believe this) better than her to keep her on edge.

I think Venus may not go for her serve as much against Serena because she knows Serena can handle it and use that pace against her. If Serena is used to 120 and you throw in 110 hopefully she'll miss-hit a return or two.

I have a flat cannon serve, but once my opponent gets the rhythm of it, I start spinning them in so that they break off court or down the middle.

Oh heck, I don't know what to say about this, I an oldest brother and I expect to beat my little brothers in everything, but when they beat me, I feel like I've taught them and made them better.

That's why I can understand Venus taking pictures at the French when she loses and crying along with Serena when Venus wins. Even though Venus is saying the right things about wanting to be #1 again, I don't think she feels like #2 if Serena is #1. I think Venus thinks they are both #1 when Serena is on top. I don't think Serena felt that way, but now that she is on the mountain top, she may feel that way if and when Venus claims #1 again.

I think it would take a lot of pressure off of them both if they just made some humiliating side bet with each other, like the loser has to crawl off court on their hands and knees (that's one of my family's favorites) because then they aren't thinking about Grandslams and the world watching, they're just thinking how funny it would be to make the other one crawl off the court or how badly they don't want to be the one crawling off the court.

It could be as silly as the loser has to eat a bowl of Serena's gumbo without drinking any water.

As I've posted before the tennis should be fun for the players, if they meet in 4 more sister slams it will finally be no big deal.

Maybe that's what it will take (feel the haters groaning?).

I'm willing to be patient as long as one of them is winning the Slam at the end of the day.

Venus went for her serves in last year US Open final, & won. She also did in 2000 Wim & won. Why change whats working. People tend to forget there's only 1 year between them. Both of them should have been spoilt by their older sisters. That older sister role played by Venus have got to go. I am 13 months older than my brother, & I sure never felt like his mother or even his older sister. My mom treated us both like her babies. I was not put in charge of my brother. I think my mom knew I was too young for that role.

That was a sweet post Kiwifan

I like both girls for different reasons, most of us know by now they are quite different from each other. I was pulling more for Serena last year , this year I'm pulling for Venus. For the first time I joined a couple of message boards at the beginning of the year and was able to follow the sister's matches with other fans. I was able to appreciate Venus more from her interviews, articles and fellow fans. I'll never claim I know 'Venus the person' but from what I read I began to like Venus the tennis player even more
and when Venus became N0.1 it was a huge joy as a tennis fan, -as it was a long time coming.

I understand where you're coming from Roseie after the French Open I didn't log on the net or watch any sports news,I was pretty disappointed. I also wanted Vee to do a 3peat at wimbly and though I was sad she lost, Serena's great smile at the end made me realise to move on appreciate the tennis.

To me Serena started the USOPEN final smoothly but then crumbled mentally she was hititng winners to begin with it and then IMHO I felt all Vee had to do was do a Hingis, meaning counterpunch and let serena self destruct- Venus 's serve is great but Serena's serve is even better . So I desperately hope Venus can improve it, so Vee can win the USOPEN ( or Monica I wish 2 players could win it).

I agree with BecoolSerenaLover that Serena also finds it hard to play against Venus and IMHO that USOPEN final made Rena realise if she saw Venus as her big sister and not another 'competitor' then she was already disadvantaged. Venus may not like defeating lil sis but Vee has defeated Serena before but now needs to do it without that mental edge she had over Serena. If their matches went to 3 sets I would like it more.

that's just my 2cents

People look at Venus & think she's so tough, I don't think she is. I believe she has a real tender heart. I see her as much more vulnerable than Serena. She prefers her own company, but likes children, who are not, as she puts it, mean. She's multi talented, easilly bored, so it's tough for her to make tennis her only focus. She wants to do so much. I just hope that as Venus matures she will not be afraid of her power.
Just step forward girl and take it.

First of all, I would like to thank you all for your compliments!!!:bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

I wasn't going to touch my computer today (I'm making 4 hours worth of mix tapes for my trip to England on Wednesday) but I'm so glad I gave in to temptation while checking my email!

I am a total wise-ass by nature, so I always expect harsh responses to my commentary (and I usually laugh at the commentary and don't respond because then it looks like sour grapes) but I'm glad to contribute in a positive manner.

That trend will end with this comment; Serena has a secret weapon against Venus (Roseie this is for you)...

...Serena is a big cry baby!!! She acknowleges this herself, "I'm the baby... they always give me what I want".

I'm sure Venus was put in the "mom" role more like the (pardon the expression) "hockey goon" protects the "skillful guy" in hockey. You sometimes hear them say that I beat _______ because ________ beat Serena/Venus last time, etc.

Alexandra Stevenson even said that they "protect" her too, and will get "pay back" for anyone who beats on her. And that list is probably long enough to guarantee a couple more Slams for the Sisters:p

The older sisters can't be Serena's "hockey goon" like Venus could while Serena was trailing behind her up the rankings.

Now from my understanding, once they moved into a place of their own, Venus really went from "goon" to "mom". According to Serena, Venus does all the work in the house (cooking etc.). That's just no way for the top 2 tennis players in the world to be.

Can you imagine Steffi making Monica eggs after Monica beat her ass in the French?

Roseie is right that it's over now, Venus has to change that thinking. But it's hard to go from the goon to the person that your sister needs a goon to protect her from.

You can't just flip a switch.

I also agree with Roseie that Venus isn't as emotionally invested in her tennis a Serena is. That said, I don't think Venus is bored, she will enthusiastically kick anyone else's ass out there, just not Serena's. Because Venus knows that it means more to Serena.

Still, Venus is going to win the US Open because Serena has won enough now. I don't think Serena's tears can get the same response from Venus now that Serena's got a French and Venus' Wimbledon.

Once again thanks for the nice comments (when we get closer to the US Open I'll start baring my fangs a little more at the competition)
