Russia will be looking to extend its 2-0 advantage over its newly promoted rivals, having won in the First Round in 1987 and again in 1997. Israel has the home advantage for the first time and that, combined with its current run of good form, winning its last ten Fed Cup ties, should make for an enthralling match.

Russia def. Israel 4 - 1
R1 - S. Peer (ISR) def. D. Safina (RUS) 0-6 6-2 6-2
R2 - T. Obziler (ISR) lost to M. Sharapova (RUS) 0-6 4-6
R3 - S. Peer (ISR) lost to M. Sharapova (RUS) 1-6 1-6
R4 - T. Obziler (ISR) lost to A. Chakvetadze (RUS) 4-6 2-6
R5 - T. Obziler / S. Peer (ISR) lost to D. Safina / E. Vesnina (RUS) 0-6 6-1 4-6

I'm very surprised Israel chose hard court over clay. Isn't that giving an advantage to Russia?

Maria is the only one of the Russian squad with any form right now. And where's Sveta?

Anna should do fine against Tzipi but I see a big tussle with Shahar. As long as Masha wins her rubbers Russia only need one more so perhaps it takes some of the pressure off Anna and she might relax and play well.

Anna only needs to win one match, then takes that form into tournaments.

I guess Tarpy feels Anna isn't in good enough form to put her in against Peer in the opening match. Anna might get subbed into the 4th rubber or if the doubles is a dead rubber then maybe it's a good chance to have some fun on court and try to get a win with her buddy.

I suppose now Dinara lost her match there is a chance Anna will be put in for the fourth rubber. The conditions are incredibly tough out there however. You need to be of very strong character to withstand the baiting by the crowd.

I warned you already when the draw came out that it is gonna be very difficult tie because the Israeli crowd is not easy. In the local media everybody is not happy with what happened in the last games of Sharapova-Obziler. I think that tomorrow the Israeli team and Israeli federation will make some steps to take out the provocative elements in the crowd. It was not good image today although in General, the crowd was very supportive. It was just too much at some points. It will be interesting what The russian team will say. I think that they will complain but not beyond that.

Normally, when an athlete behaves like Anna did, I look down upon it as the athletes are paid a great deal of money to deal with stuff like that and the fans pay a great deal of money to watch. But this instance strikes me as an exception to that rule; this is not a football (American or European) match, a basketball game, or what have you. This is tennis, a sport built on high standards of etiquette both from the players and spectators. It's like golf in that way. Anna may have went a bit too far with the taunting particularly at trivial points of the match, but for the most part, I empathize with her and her teammates. You should not have to deal with a crowd like that in tennis under any circumstances. Of course, in a Fed Cup there's going to be favoritism which is fine, but there is a line and the partisans crossed it. For one example, the American crowd at last year's final showed favoritism for sure, but never jeered the Russians, tried to distract them, or did anything unbecoming. That typifies most Fed Cup crowds and that's how it ought to be.

After her game, Chakvetadze was critical of the partisan Ramat Hasharon crowd.

"I think they (the crowd) should be a little more respectful... all we ask that they are a little more quiet during the points," said Chakvetadze.

At the same time, she noted that "I love to have the crowd against me, and I use it to lift my own level. Today was tough because the fans were very loud but I'm very happy to have won."

"I started off slowly but then I managed to get into the match," said Chakvetadze. Obziler said she had done her best but was beaten by a better player.

"I lost the momentum after a good start, perhaps I could have done some things better but today proved the difference in standard between us," she said.

I have never been more proud of Anna then after this weekends match. I think I fell a little more in love with her too! :hearts:

The crowd was a good crowd in the fact that they really supported their players. The crowd was a REALLY bad crowd though when it came to following instructions and behaving when asked to. To lose your player 2 points, and in my opinion should have been a game lost as well, is just unforgivable. The chair umpire had already deducted 2 crucial points from Israel and right after the second one she asked them 3 or more times to quiet down. At that point I think they really should have been deducted a game. The chair umpire and the players did a good job getting through it though.

Anna was so amazing. She played and kept her cool the whole match after getting down 0-3 in the first set. She fought back and stayed steady. The second serve looked a lot better. Then the fire came out! I was so happy to see her just let lose and let some of that pent up emotion out. WAY TO GO ANNA! :worship: I loved seeing Maria and the other Russians fully supporting her too.

This was a great win from Anna and she showed so much heart in the match. I'm so very proud of her and hope she will bottle just a bit of that for the rest of the season.

And I agree the cat, Anna looked wonderful in the new maroon outfit!

With this line-up it looks like there is no way the Russian team should lose this one. The USA without Davenport or the Williams sisters should be relatively simple to beat. Vania is solid, nothing more, Ahsha hits hard but is erratic and only has a slice backhand- you can't get away with that these days unless you are as fast and fit as Steffi was (and Rolle was still quite plump last time I saw her). I don't know Madison well but I don't expect that much from her. Liezel is a fabulous doubles player (although I think her partner Cara is better) but that won't be enough save them. If they choose to use Anna she'll probably get some good wins under her belt. I wonder how pumped Anna will get this time?

Anna found it very difficult to close out this match. Up to halfway through the second set Vania had only won 7 points on return of serve and Anna was serving 70% first serves in. You can see she finished with 19 receiving points won so Anna really struggled at the end. Some of that was handing games away with double faults.

nice to see that she was broken only two times:p

Yeah, one of those times it was 30-30 and Anna served two double faults in a row. It was poor play from Anna that led her to be broken, not improvement in Vania's play.

Dead rubbers left so looks like Anna's not playing again. Here's her interview after the win over Vania.

Anna won a match! On red clay! So yeah it's in Fed Cup, no ranking points but during these Anna slumping days this IS good. ;)

Once again, Anna made the later stages of the match more dramatic than they should have been, but at least she beat King in straight sets, unlike Vera.

If Maria and Sveta both go to the final then it's likely Anna won't play another live rubber this year. I hope she's selected for the team at least, and then you never know...

Yeah most probably Anna won't be playing in the final if Sveta and Maria is in there. Maybe they'd put her (along with Vera) as an alternate in case one of the two pulls out.

Yeah I'm kind of surprise that Vera needed three sets. I didn't see any of the Fed Cup matches but I was certainly expecting her to win easier than Anna.

Anna is definately deserving of going to the finals this year after her extremely emotional win in Israel and then her tough battle against King. I feel that she has done enough to not only be in the finals, but also to represent her country in this years Olympics. On the other hand, I also know how many top level players the Russians have to choose from so I can understand if she does not make one or the other. I really like Vesnina too, but after her performance at the US FedCup showing I would take Anna for the team over her at this point. It's hard to argue with the choices of Sveta and Maria though as they are having a pretty good year and an outstanding year respectively.

Congratulations to the Russians for reaching another FedCup final. :)
