I just got back from the tournament, winning my 1st round very decisively by 6-1 6-0...

Just getting to this place was a challenge! The guy who was giving directions had a pretty bad lisp so when he meant to say go to the left exit on Rocky Hill, he ended up saying "last," causing me to go 10 min in the wrong direction. He also said that when I got there, I should look for "Wilson Ave," and of course he meant Wilton Ave, adding another 20 min. I ended up getting there 25 min late, and was lucky I didn't get defaulted! When I got there, it was also another surprise. The tournament was supposed to be played on an indoor hard court, and when I got there, I discovered we were playing on outdoor red clay!  I hadn't played on clay in almost a year, which certainly didn't help my already frazzled nerves.

The kid I played, Travis Short, was clearly pushed to play by his mother. It was obvious he didn't want to be out there playing. That was the other problem. It was obvious he didn't really know how to play. He had a decent first serve when it went in, as well as a deep forehand, but he would hit the ball in the net or out after 5 or 6 shots. His mother also had a gigantic notepad out, tracking his winners, errors, first serve %, etc. It was clear that this mother thought her son was Andre Agassi, when he was really Torrey Gambill;)

I didn't get to warm up because I was so late, (Travis got a 30 min warm up in w/his mom) and I ended up double faulting away the first 3 points, as well as my first service game. After that, I found my game, and started to play decently. I didn't play all that great. I made a few stupid shots and didn't get enough of my first serves in. I think it was partly because I wasn't really being pushed out there, partly because I didn't warm up. I played my best tennis the last 3 games, winning a couple of points by serve and volleying, and closing the match out w/an ace. My opponent's mom looked shocked that I won, and ended up chastising her son in front of everybody there. I felt terrible! It's just a game, and there is no reason to be so frustrated. She was way more upset than him about the loss:mad:

Anyway, I'll have to step it up tomorrow when I play the #6 seed, but I think I can get through if I play well. Peace:)
