Nice try monica...

Great job LISA!!:)

"She just played really well," said Seles, ranked No. 4 in the world. "She was serving well and hitting her forehand, and whenever I had chances, I made a lot of unforced errors. I have to play a better level of tennis if I want to beat a player like that."

Monica never complains or gives excuses, she's always a class act. However the photo clearly shows that she had some sort of pain, but she will never complain and will always praise her opponent. I just hope she's okay.

Nothing was mentioned about an injury in the news reports. Hope Monica is fine and just had an off day. I am bummed that she lost. I was hoping, just as much as everyone else, that Monica would be on fire during the summer hardcourt season. She has a lot of points to defend. I want her to take at least one of these titles this summer, since she got soclose last year.

lol....my point also oliver...the photo shows she clearly had some sort of pain....and when the photo shows serena at say wimibledon holding her stomach and running, oh that is not enough. these people would rather take the opportunity and play god or Ms. cleo and predict and tell us what really was going on! im not hatin, just statin!

I hope we are not suggesting that Monica lost to Lisa because she was injured. Monica only led their head to head 2-1 before this match, with Lisa ironnically winning their second match in straight sets on clay.

Enough... this is ridiculous. What has Venus gotta do with this?

And if Monica says she isn't injured, she isn't. PERIOD. Lisa was playing really well according to posters who watched it, and Monica was a little off, that was why she lost.

selesrules
Jul 27th, 2002, 01:58 AM
Who's talking about the loss? I just said that I hope Monica isn't injured. Monica didn't say that she is not injured, if they asked her then we haven't see her answer. But my post has nothing to do with the fact that she lost, but simply the picture.

What is wrong with you people? Who cares who Monica or Venus or any other player lost to? Its not like everyone can win all the time! Didn't meg kick venus' butt all over the court last year? Didn't venus kick meg's butt all over the court this year? Jeezus, grow up already and realize that every player wins and losers to higher and lower ranked players.

EVERY PLAYER, EVEN YOUR FAV.

Deal with it.

Oh PS

If you are really injured and cannot play then the player should retire. Period.

Afterwards dont come up with excuses. If you can finish the match then you dont need any excuses even if you could only play at 50 or 75 or 90 percent. whatever. You play to deal with the outcome good or bad.

this goes for serena, jen, monica, jelena, etc. etc. every player who refuses to retire despite what might be going on. If anything players who continue to play despite being sick or partially hurt should be commended for displaying heart and courage.

fine i wont talk about finals...she won 4 titles with top ten actually playing in them unlike seles, i mean please doha and madrid, what challenging fields...venus did beat justine 3 or 4 times this year, the same person who beat monica at wimbledon right...winning big titles doesnt make you a better player because some "big" tournaments have depleted field for example tokyo and indian wells, so now hingis and hantuchova have had a better year than venus???

Good point (not sarcastically), but is all you've got to defend for what you said...anyways all im trying to do is call attention that some players can do certain things and not get criticized for that the williams would be...its hard being loyal fans when even though their winning they get bashed (dont tell me its because of domination because it was even before that)

When Monica was on top, she was criticized. A few years back Hingis was criticized. Anna is always criticized. The Williams aren't an exception, they are just like everyone else.

Sorry to see Monica losing so easily. I am sure Lisa just played the match of her life. I mean they say she was "regularly" hitting 104 mph serves and made very few unforced errors. Monica just got outplayed by a player who is willing to use the whole court a la Henin, Hingis, Serena. Monica will bounce back, don't worry.

Monica pulled out of Wimbledon with an injury when she was 17 years old. People preferred to speculate that she was either faking or pregnant. How nice.

he he he... I didn't know there is this much antagonizm (sp?) b/n monica's and venus' fans ( I am a fan of both :)).

Now, to the subject of the thread, I don't think monica is injured but what do I know? Monica never likes to admit she is injured after she lost a match, so her remark posted above can be misleading.

On another note, do you guys think playing the Fed Cup (and all that bonding) with Lisa has anything to do with this lose? In another word, does a player lose her competitiveness when playing a match against her Fed Cup team-mate (especially right after such a great week at Fed Cup)? BTW, I am not trying to make an excuse - just curious.

GO MONICA :)

I agree about the obvious doublestandard concerning players and injury. When Venus or Serena are injured it is fake, but when other players get hurt it is okay. Their is a doublestandard also in here as well, accusing williams fans of killing this thread. And writing nothing about Lolita or RDIS? Did you people overlook RDIS and LOLITA up in here? They were nothing nice, and should be spanked upside the head with a tennis raquet.

Anyway, I think Venus and Monica are alot of alike. Both classy champions, and when they are OBVIOUSLY hurt, they will only give thier opponents credit, instead of blaming the injury.

leave Monica and Venus alone

Uh, no they are NOT Williams fans, that is my point.

R-DIS disses Venus alot Daniel, and always talks bad about Monica. I'm Just saying that don't ignore them, and focus on Williams vrs Seles, because ALOT of Venus and Serena fans actually like Seles alot. In fact imho after the Seles fans, the Williams fans are #2 in support of Monica. If your talking fansbases though, as we all have individual taste.

First, the reason we didn't believe Serena's holding her stomach b/c she had a streak of losses in 2001 that were blamed by her on her stomach troubles. It seemed like whenever she had a close loss in a big match, she would blame it on the stomach. Second, and on target with this thread, Monica could very well be injured. She often down-plays injuries in the press room, and quite smartly, to avoid nagging questions. She also just is nice and gives her opponent credit!

you still don't believe it? didn't you see the difference in her results when she solved these problems after wimbledon 2001? :p

and staying on the subject, Monica looks in pain in the pic but hopefully for her it was just a cramp and not something serious!

She looks more exasperated than injured to me in that picture, and cynicole suggested she simply had a 'bad day at the office', but who really knows except Monica?

Bottom line is she gave credit where it was due - Raymond DOES have game when she can put it all together...unfortunately, it happened against Monica...

As for the lurking haters who messed up this thread earlier...

Anyway, go Monica in San Diego:)

monica is not the player of last year. her losses this year have been quite disappointing. she's just not the big threat anymore and will increasingly lose matches in this fashion. she's not gonna start dominating as time goes on. she's past her peak.

has monica got herself in shape properly in 96-98, she may have added a couple more great years to her career, but i think there are signs that she's winding down too, a bit like how ASV and Conchi started to go downhill around 99-01.

True, Monica doesn't use injuries as excuses, but I think tends to stay off the tour when she's carrying injuries, so I believe she is not injured. The photo show Monica with stitch/cramp. It was very hot by all accounts, and Monica is not the fittest player out there.

I think Seles fans expect too much of her and carry too much wishful thinking to enter into rational discussions of her matches nowadays. Even when she's injury-free, she's having more and more off-days like yesterday. Yes, there'll be some bright spells to come, but she is in the twilight of her career.

Hunkyalex--As much as I have to agree with you on this, I just don't think Monica will go without a fight. I just have this feeling like she can turn it on like no other player. And comparing her to ASV and Conchita isn't fair. They weren't near the player she was. Here's to Monica getting fit and playing well!!

Top players get out played in matches. It doesn't happen often but if happens. Remember when Amy Frazier defeated Hingis 6-3, 6-3 in a California tournament two years ago? The next week Hingis defeated Frazier 6-2, 6-1. There are times when top players get out played. And Lisa has been playing great this tournament. And a loss to Lisa isn't bad and it isn't the end of the world. Lisa has won a title this year and has won numbers of doubles titles this year as well. She knows how to play! She's a veteran.

Anyway, Monica will be back next week.

She was not injured, she was perfectly fine. She is just over the hill. BTW, Monica doesn't use injury as excuse, credit to her, but how come I heard she was not physically well at the French and Wimbledon? I mean if players really don't want to use sickness or injury as excuses, then simply don't mention it at all. Otherwise it's a little like ,well I just leave it there.
