There's a new game coming out next week July 30th for Playstation 2 called Sega Sports Tennis which is the same game as Tennis 2K2 that was released on Dreamcast. Hopefully the game will be better than other Playstation tennis games. Here is some screen shots
No drops, no slices, no xcrt shots, and most points must be won with a volley. That was Virtua Tennis, the first in the series, the one I had. However, I hear they fixed those things up.
The best tennis game (if you don't mind not playing as the pros) is actually Mario Tennis. You can hit every shot in the game with just two buttons, and it is very solid. A sequel is coming out for Nintendo GameCube later this year.
But if that doesn't interest you, Sega Sports Tennis is definitely the best realistic tennis game out there. Although Serena looks fat in the screen shots.

Yeah I have Mario Tennis and I it's the best tennis game ever. After all these years the matches are still really competitive and fun. On all my other tennis games i barely lose games it's so boring and easy. I'm just looking for a new game with pros that is actually good.

gosh, I wish someone would make a pro version of Mario Tennis

actually Tennis 2k2 is a pretty good game, but the thing i hate about it the most is. i will be at the net and so will the computer, and i hit an over head smash, and they hit a swining volley for the winner? what kinda shot is that. you should see it. it is very funnie. but it is an advantage once you figure out how to do it also. but i think that this new game will be very much similar!

matter of fact, after looking at all of these screen shots, it is the same exact thing, not different at all, just for playstation 2. graphics the same and everything. really eveything is the EXACT same, all the tidbits and all! cheap suckers! can't make even the slitest change!
Jul 26th, 2002, 03:06 AM
they might have added a couple more courts. some look new, but then again Tennis 2k2 for Dreamcast had 27-8 courts! so i can't remeber them all.
Jul 26th, 2002, 03:09 AM
the thing i hate about the game is the fact that the men and women can't play against each other excpet in mixed doubles. So you only have seven other people to play matches against.

Yea R.DIS, Mario Tennis is very difficult, but there is no luck to it. Other games I would just mash buttons and win, but with Mario Tennis you better have skillz!
Tennis is a sport that goes well into a videogame medium, but it's impossible to get all the top players into one game. Yet another reason there needs to be a player's association.

It will be a shame they haven't improved the gameplay from Virtua Tennis. Fingers crossed. But some of those screenshots look a bit different from the Dreamcast version so hopefully they have made some improvements. If so, it will be a great game! The graphics are the best for sure.
I have Mario Tennis and it is very good, but finally there is a PS2 Tennis game that is better. One of the best tennis games: it's called "Slam Tennis" but it is only available on PAL at this stage. But highly recommended. Good graphics, some great courts etc. But it is the gameplay that is VERY GOOD! It is really a great game for competing against friends - singles or doubles.
I have written more about this game on another thread here:
I also have:
* Mario Tennis (Nintendo) very good gameplay but not as good as Slam Tennis)
* Smash Court Tennis (PS2) gameplay a little simple but great for doubles against friends,
* WTA Tour (PS2) the PAL version is excellent with a great world tour
* Centre Court - Hard Hitter (PS2) terrible
* Next Generation Tennis (PS2) Ordinary
* Slam Tennis (PS2) Very, very good !!!
* Virtua Tennis 2 (Dreamcast) great graphics but gameplay is a bit limited IMO

I just looked up another site about the Sega Tennis game and it does mention improvements like crosscourt shots, dropshots, a revamped world tour etc! Take a look:
Thanks for all the info, we can only hope and pray Sega Tennis is good.
Slam Tennis looks real good but i doubt it will ever be released over here.
I think they need to release one huge tennis game with a bunch of players instead of games with only like 16 or 8 players. Too bad all the top players won't agree to be in the games. It would also be awesome if they had some retired players like McEnroe or Graf in the games but that won't happen.

I am pretty sure "Slam Tennis" is going to be released in the USA later this year. Shame it doesn't have the topline players and a World Tour, Then it would be awesome.
Yes, I agree R.DIS. One great game with a really deep World Tour (like PAL version of WTA Tennis) with the graphics of Virtua Tennis, all the top players, and the gameplay of Slam Tennis and we would be in heaven! One day.... the games are getting better so it's just a matter of time hopefully

Mario Tennis is the best tennis game i've played, and I have about 10 of them, mostly on the PC. I used to have such good matches with Yoshie. :D

Sega tennis (Virtua tennis 2, here) has excellent gameplay and graphics. The best bit is you can design your own Male and Female player, or replicate your faves. They're rubbish at first, but you can train them up on the minigames.

there was nuthing wrong with the shots on Tennis 2k2, i think they are just adding it in for peeps to buy it!

best tennis game is WTA Tour Tennis, once you can get over the shock of the poor graphics, you'll notice how awesome the world tour mode really is! There's like 100 players and they all play differantly with Monica Seles and Cara Black being the toughest to beat!!You can also create your own player and the ranking is based on the real wta ranking system.(I'm no.3 at the moment :) )

LOL WTA tennis isn't half as good as Sega Sports Tennis or Mario Tennis!
BTW: Slam Tennis is kinda shoddy looking and doesn't feature any female players, you can barely hit any crosscourt shots too... it kinda sucks in comparison with Sega Sports Tennis.
I loooove to play as Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario, I have just mastered her dropshots, and in doubles I like a Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario - Carlos Moya team!
I play men's singles as Thomas Enqvist, whoa that backhand!
Still, if I put it on HARD, I can still lose or be taken to a tie-break easily, I mean, I get overpowered so easily by Monica Seles or Venus or Serena Williams :( and when i try to play as Venus or Serena, I get fucking bagelled because I hit too many errors :(
Well, I read some reviews of this game also, it gets like 90% everywhere, it's awesome, u need to buy it!

I think WTA Tennis is possibly the best tennis game around - and I am not talking about your USA version. I am talking about the PAL version which is in Europe & Australia. It has very good gameplay and a fantastic World Tour. The only downside is that the graphics are pretty ordinary.
I have Virtua Tennis 2K2 (which is the original of the Sega Tennis game). I hope the gameplay is better on Sega Tennis. In the original it is too easy to hit winners and it is also too simple. The best thing about Sega Tennis is the graphics. Also, there are mixed reviews on this site:
Still, I will be buying it when it is available in PAL. :)
With "Slam Tennis" you can hit crosscourt shots if you use the L1 or R1 button when you hit the ball. Easy. I prefer the gameplay of that one to Sega Tennis as well. Shame it doesn't have more big name players otherwise I would love it.

Oh god, Sega Sports Tennis is good, and what's that about no slices, lobs or dropshots? I can do all those... :p
Boy, this game can be really hard on the higher levels, those players just get everything back, with interest...
