When did she withdraw, because if she did it before she had to play her first match for Fed Cup, I wonder why she went on and played?

Ben.
Jan 30th, 2008, 09:14 AM
She withdrew from Pattaya either yesterday or 2 days ago, she must of known she had a bit of an injury coming into Fed Cup but it musn't of been that serious before her match and somehow she must of triggered it when she played.

ALICIA Molik's injury curse has grown worse - on two fronts - with the former world No. 8 now nursing a torn calf and golfer's elbow.

Molik will be sidelined for at least six weeks after a Fed Cup setback that will compromise the South Australian's preparation for May's French Open.

"Alicia's calf is black and she's on crutches," Molik's coach Nicole Bradtke said yesterday.

"She tore the calf at six-all in the first set in Fed Cup against New Zealand up in Bangkok (last week).

"She ran for a drop shot and she said it felt as if someone had hit her from behind with a racquet across the calf.

"She basically snapped the calf. There's a 2 1/2cm tear in her leg. Alicia's also got golfer's elbow, which is probably more of a worry because we know, with time, the calf's going to get better."

Molik is having rehabilitation daily at Olympic Park and hopes to resume at Miami next month.

Molik stood on the cusp of the top five in January 2005, only to be struck down by a debilitating inner-ear infection. In 2003 she suffered heel spurs on both feet.

In 2007 she was inconvenienced by a hamstring strain while also experiencing the first twinges of golfer's elbow.

And, while attempting to pilot Australia's unsuccessful bid for Fed Cup promotion, Molik tore her left calf.

"It's extremely unfortunate," Bradtke said.

"We were saying up in Bangkok that, as recently as three years ago, we had a world-class Fed Cup team.

"But with injuries and illness to Alicia and Sam Stosur, we're now struggling a bit. Alicia won't be hitting tennis balls for at least three weeks.

"We had planned to play Indian Wells, Rome, Strasbourg and the French Open, but now we'll have to make some adjustments.

"Miami (March 24-April 6) is a chance, but we might look at contesting some of the smaller ITF (International Tennis Federation) events.

"It will all depend on how Alicia recovers. The hardest thing with a calf is that you have to leave it a week longer than you actually think.

"We're confident Alicia will be ready for the French."

Bradtke said Molik would have to carefully monitor golfer's elbow, which is caused by over-use of muscles and tendons around the elbow.

At its most severe, the condition can produce shooting pains down the forearm.

Ranked 66th in the world, Molik lost in the second round of the Australian Open to Czech Nicole Vaidisova.

MOLIK LOOKS TO BEIJING

Athens bronze medallist Alicia Molik refuses to give up on making her third straight Australian Olympics team despite losing almost all hope of qualifying for Beijing.
Sidelined with a calf injury since the Australian Open in January, Molik has slipped to 116th in the world rankings – well outside the Olympic cut-off of 56 – and, barring a minor miracle, will need to snare one of eight international wildcards to book her ticket to China.
The 27-year-old former pin-up girl of Australian tennis will make her comeback at the WTA tournament starting in Florida on Monday, but will then find it nigh impossible to make up the rankings shortfall during the looming European claycourt season.
Molik accepts her fate probably lies in the hands of the International Olympic Committee and tennis's governing body, the ITF, who will issue their wildcards in the middle weekend of Wimbledon in July.
But she remains optimistic about adding Beijing to her Sydney 2000 and Athens 2004 experiences.
"Alicia's incredibly keen to go to the Olympics," Molik's manager Lisa Chaffey said today.
"It has been a priority on her schedule for the past year or more.
"Athens was such a wonderful team experience and personal experience for her and Beijing is high on her agenda.
"Obviously based on what happened in Athens she would be very hopeful of going to Beijing.
"It would be another pinnacle in her career if she could get to another Olympics."
Australia could have as many as eight tennis representatives in Beijing, but only men's world No.22 Lleyton Hewitt and Samantha Stosur, who has an injury-protected ranking of No.37, are guaranteed starts.
Casey Dellacqua, ranked 52nd and with few points to defend over the coming months, should also be safe, as should doubles specialists Rennae Stubbs and Paul Hanley.
Doubles players need to be ranked in the top 10 to be assured a spot, while top 15 will probably also be good enough, with Stubbs currently seventh and Hanley 15th.
Along with Molik, world No.68 Chris Guccione and the 73rd-ranked Peter Luczak are also living on the edge.
The 64-strong Olympic singles draws will be determined by world rankings as at June 9.
Generally, the top 56 players will gain direct entry, but individual countries can only enter a maximum of four players in each event – a criterion that disadvantages the likes of tennis superpowers Russia, France, Spain and Argentina.
But the criteria could work in Guccione's and Luczak's favour.
Because France has nine players in the men's top 56, Spain eight and Argentina seven, the cut-off is likely to be about No.67 – and within striking distance of both Guccione and Luczak.

Alicia is wasting her time by going to Berlin just to play doubles with Bryanne Stewart. I honestly think that pairing sucks, they are best friends but they have never done any good together. Stosur, Pratt, Gajdosova had some goods results with Bryanne but Alicia just seem to lose everything.
Why is she just playing doubles here? Her ranking would have gotten her into the Qualies draw...
And whats the rest of her pre-RG scheduale like???
Let me guess... Alicia trying to play all the big tournaments in the hope she will beat everyone but loses first round until she's burnt herself out so much that she misses out on Olympic wildcard? She is at 25k form at the moment. She should be playing good ITFs or atleast tier 5 WTAs.

Anyway Molik / Stewart vs. Peng / Sun... straight sets loss there.

Zl@tko
May 5th, 2008, 11:25 AM
I don't understand either why is she playing just doubles in Berlin... she should have entered some challanger, try to win some matches and get more confidence...

I saw her in Prague and it didn't look to me that her game is that bad, she still can hit some good shots, but she didn't move that well and her first serve isn't such a weapon like it used to be, because she didn't get that many first serves in... also she seems to play more slice backhands than normal backhands... without going to the net afterwards, and playing that slice on clay all the time won't help... But she still seemed motivated... I wonder does she have a coach right now?

I still can't believe that it's the same player who made it to top eight and was winning so many matches until that inner ear infection... I hope she can find a way to improve her game to at least close to the level she used to play at... it would be nice to see her winning some matches again... good luck alicia!
