Now that the Australian Open is coming close, let's heat up the hype........
If Serena and Henin meet, who will be the crowd's favorite?

Serena.
Because they all hate Henin who retired at 2006 Final.

When Serena made that superhero comeback against Clijsters in the semis from 0-5 down in the third I think, in 2003. (Some people in) the crowd were made harsh comments when she was about to serve, I always thought that was racist. I was kinda confirmed by the Justine matchup in semis of the next Grand Slam that year, we all know how that went.

Heck, maybe the other person is right, and they hate Henin for retiring 2 years ago, I highly doubt it thoughh

Because both players are so mentally tough I doubt it would matter to them who the crowd would root for.

As for who'd win? Well History suggests that Justine would be the fav but that's what head to heads are like. Who knows? Serena might win the next three matches they play. But to get a better indication, I'd like to see how both players fair in the earlier rounds of the AO.

Objectively? Justine.

Subjectively? Justine

But that's why Serena will be so dangerous.

As of right now, the earliest that could be is a QF. So they would both have time to remind the audience that both of them have done some things that have caused their character to be called into question. But if they both play well, and they're both nice, the Aussies will give both fiar play.

If we get a repeat of 'The Hand', or Serena's comments about the French 'just wanting to stay home and make wine' (At a time when they were deploying forces in Afghanistan in support of the USA) at Roland Garros, that player is going to LOSE support pretty damn quick though.

I would guess the Aussie's love their three-time champion.

Probably neutral. I tend to think Justine is still popular in Sydney as I haven^t heard of any negative reaction to her on court. It will be interesting to see how the Melbourne crowds react to Justine. The Aussies are nice people, so I doubt there will be much negative reaction to her in Melbourne either.

I don't get the historical significance of "The Hand." Henin has beaten Serena so many other times since.

I think the Aussies really like Serena actually...but for some reason I sense that the next time Serena plays Henin, she will have tha tlook that she had against Amelie at Roland Garros 2003.

I'm guessing they should love Serena. So many good moments there and great entertainment for the crow. It would be the PERFECT place for Serena to exact revenge.

Also, Justine hasnt been to AO since the retirement in the final. It will be interesting to see what happens.

Justine's obviously the favorite at the moment. Let's see how the first week plays out though.

Serena all the way even if the crowds aren't with her
i think she should have learnt to deal with it now

If Serena is fit and focused, she is almost unbeatable. But Justine is more regular, so it will depend on who's on better shape.
And don't miss out Venus, she was impressive in Hong Kong and has an easier draw to make the final.

Some of you guys didn't even read the original post. It's not about the favorite of the match (which is Henin by far), and anyone who thinks other wise is a Williams ball sack hanger... but the post was about the crowd favorite.

I think Justine will not beat Serena when they meet, this will begin a series of beatdowns afforded Justine just like pova.I think Serena lost to Justine when she was coming off some form of injury.I think they are meeting at an event that is not hostile to Serena and I think the Aussies are sunny nice people.I believe its time people...and the beatdown will be thunderous.:p

I think Justine will have the majority of the crowd support if the two actually make it that far! I have a feeling one of them will not!

crowd favorite and favorite to win= Justine. She's no.1..and has Serena's number. difficult difficult match up for this Serena without her old movement.

Crowd favorite--Serena, I guess. Justine retiring in the final vs Amelie did not endear her to many.

But favorite to win the title is Justine.
She's the reigning World No.1, and also won the last Grand Slam title beating both Sisters en route (yeah, I know there are arguments about their form/fitness etc.).
Serena has not won a major in 12 months (usually doesn't mean much with her lol).

Serena has also lost her last 3 Grand Slam matches to Henin, and has it all to prove against the Justinator (this is the kind of challenge Serena loves!).

So the favorite is Henin. She just seems to have a strong will to win against her nearest rivals atm and until someone can step up and knock her off her perch, she'll remain the one to beat.

To the original post: Serena is obviously crowd favourite as 3 times champ who has comeback so emphatically so many times. This as opposed to Henin who retired in 06 and went beserk over a linecall for her favour in 04.

So generally Serena crowd favourite. Those who say Henin is match favourite by a mile are taking it a bit far. Serena is obviously in fitter shape and playing much better than US (from Hopman Cup) and has also become very focused. OZ is her court as it were. Conversely Henin has showed this week in Sydney she is not playing as well since US Open. THen her level was amazing now it has not been so good (still great). A few have had chances against her and a couple choked. Henin favourite yes but not by this country mile people are on about.

I'll go out on a limb and say Serena just generally disliked by the general tennis public (spectators). Maybe because she is still seen as intimidating...

I remember when Serena was injured at wimbledon against Daniela - people actually wrote in and complained, telling Serena to F off back to Hollywood, even though it was clear that she was not faking. The crowd wasn't responding to her all the well in the Hopman cup - but they were loving justine in Sydney.

So I think Justine will be favourite (even with her PR history :tape:).

Serena - Being Black - Being American - not being James Blake suck up nice - not being "pretty" - playing "ugly" power tennis (even though Sharapova does the same thing yet is praised for it )- not being a good sport < Justine - Being boring - not being "pretty" - retiring in a slam final + playing "pretty" tennis + being white + not being American

It's close but I think Justine
Serena should be a crowd favorite seeing how many great matches she's played at AO but she's not even liked at home in America.

Justine. Even if Justine played Venus she would still be the Aussie crowd favorite.:o It's just the way it is but it should motivate Serena to whip that ass.
