Ana... it's progress. Keep it up! You'll get your first slam victory soon :)

Are the kinks in the armor showing for Justine?? I thought the YEC final was an anomaly with the errors and double faults, but here again.. low serve % and too many double faults. She's not going to get away with that against a more experienced player. Step it up Justine! :)

11 dfs eeeek and ana couldn't take advantage of it. the only 2 people who have a chance to beat henin at oz open are related to each other and are already slam champions. justine wont put in a serving performance like this at melbourne.

Justine was asked about skydiving and the interviewer asked did she get more excitement from winning tournaments or skydiving. She answered by saying something like since she's winning more tournaments she doesn't need to go skydiving as often to get that adrenalin rush.

I agree. Ana was playing below par as well. She mad a lot of UE. More than Henin. Her serve was also bad. Usually she's a very good server while Henin is not. Imo Ana has a chance at beating Henin. If not at the AO then sometime later this year.

but thats my point henin didn't play well today ana played worse, though i can garentee if ana played great today justine would have played better. henin will play to the level needed. if anas gonna beat henin this year she needs a near perfect match and it to not be on clay.

AO ???

After perfect 3-setters 8-0 score vs TOP10 in 2007 Ana finaly loss.
I'm proud on Ana b/c fight back in 2nd. In 1st hour of this match seems that will be repeat of Ana's RG colapse vs Justine. Ana won 1st game and lead 40-15 in second but she blow it and after that Justine have 6-2 *1-0 (lead in 2nd with break)... but Ana regroup herself and strike back. She served well in 3rd set, but one single stupid serve-game give final deccission who will win this match.

Good fight Ana

i didn't say she lowered her level deliberately but henins level usualy depends on the level the oposition is playing at. shes never gonna go out there and blast a top 5 player 6-1, 6-1 its just not her game. shes gonna react to whats coming at her and do her best to win.

Oh, I don't think she was being cocky about skydiving. Just that the question is about two years old, something she did while out sick to replace the rush of competitive tennis. I think that is really all she meant, old news and she doesn't have to do it so much now.

Her serve motion is different, and she doesn't seem totally confident with it yet. Neither player served well, the condition seemed a bit windy for great serving.

Ana showed signs of better play than last year - and that speaks well for the year to come. Justine seems like she just needs some match play to sort some things out.

Decent match to start of fighing season.

shap_half
Jan 10th, 2008, 04:47 AM
Nina, I think what was meant is that if not playing well, Justine would have raised her level just enough to pull out a win.it's a fairly common occurance in her matches. When she's not playing well, she usually ends up doing just enough to win. If Ana had raised her level, Justine would have tried to do the same despite early struggles in the match.

And to Martian, I don't think you're in any position to be spouting off judgments regarding arrogance considering some of the players you support.it's sad that you've chosen to enter a results thread just to spread your usual brand of vitriol against Justine. I pity you.

no of course she didn't but henin isn't a player who is gonna wipe the floor with a player. if her opositions playing bad it usualy brings henins level down, as she plays alot of reactive tennis.

ninanina19
Jan 10th, 2008, 04:52 AM
I didn't think Justine was deliberately lowering her level. I just think that if Ana had played well Henin wouldn't have played much better than she did today. She is rusty and has very little match play coming in. I just think she was off to begin with. If Ana had taken advantage of that I think she could've won, maybe in straights. Justine's serve was just plain bad.

look im gonna try one last time henin plays to the level of her oponents and then usualy comes up with the goods when it matters. look at there match in the YEC ana played amazing the first 5,6 games and ended up losing the first set because her high level of play pushed henin to do the same. today henin didn't play very well because she didn't need to.

Without sounding pretentious ... I think they call it "going through the gears".

Something all the truly great players do - Federer in almost every big match (barring Rafa on clay), ad nauseum.

The zone where from the outset, barring some kind of miracle: they just know they are going to win the match.

I get the distinct impression Henin is getting that kind of mindset

i think were starting to agree here, so even if ana had brought it to justine in the 3rd set playing great tennis, justine would have the belief and tennis to still pull it through. hence the playing to the level of her oposition because she knows shes gonna win.

Despite playing the worst she's played since her semi loss in Wimbledon last year, Henin won.

That second set was awful. She couldn't get a serve in to save her life, and played so passive. It wasn't until she became more aggressive in the third set and started taking it to Ivanovic and hitting deeper balls that she turned the tide and won the third. She'll definitely have to play better than this to win the AO.

Hopefully it's just rust from the six week layoff.

:o :o :o Ana is top 5 right? She should have a win over the "big 3" by now :o, don't mind celebrating winning one set off one of them :tape:

Everyone makes a big deal about how she has never taken a set off one of them and now she has and i'm happy about that, big whoop. You're right she should have but she hasn't and this was a step in the right direction for her. You don't like her so of course it means nothing to you.

Great win for Justine, and a good test before the Australian Open.

The last time I saw Justine play was against Venus at the US Open. I wish I can see her play again but I don't have any access to Sky .

Anyway, Congrats Justine. Good luck in the final :D :D :D.

Champions play either two matches: they blow their competition of the court, or they fight out a win. Seems like, according to the stats, Justine did the latter.

Both were quite bad by their standards. It was very sunny and windy (hence such a large amount of double faults). The first and second sets were whoever could take advantage of the others errors. The third just showed why Justine is No.1 and Ana only 4, when it mattered Justine was the one who stepped up. Ana was close though, she has progressed so much. Even a year ago there is no way she would have recovered from that first set and made a match of it. I'm proud of her.

Stop ffs comparing her with Roger ! She has still loads of work to do to be even compared to Roger ! At least he has personnal qualities which JH doesn't have at all and will never get !

at least she has a brain which you don't.

it seems to me that a lot of people will pass all the years till Justine's retirement hoping Ana would beat her soon:devil: anyway, adidas is producing ONLY blu tennis outfits?! It was the most blue match Ive ever seen: both players in equal blue sky Adidas clothes, playing on a dark grey court, blue and only blue :banghead:publicity panels all around. terrible!

spiritedenergy always seems to instigate something in a thread where Ana loses. I wish people wouldn't quote him so I wouldn't have to read his BS.

Good work, Justine. You didn't play anywhere near your best, but you didn't really need to.

:weirdo:. Nobody forces you to read my quotes either. Is it forbidden to criticize Justine? She's not Mother Theresa yet.:tape:

 Blimey ... your bitterness is taking over from common sense. The girl hasn't played a match since she won the YEC ... that's 2 months ...she needed the match practice and this was a good way of getting it, win or lose. It shook off the rust.

Now do you understand how it goes?

So according to you it is bitterness to assess that a player didn't want to play an extra set where she wasn't far from losing, while it is common sense to state the contrary?:tape:
Justine was simply outplayed in the second set, her form or rustiness is another matter. And I'm not bitter but very happy that Ana took her a set.
