Just found this small article on ESPN's website. Not sure if its already been posted but is there a way that more than one US doubles team can enter? Also, how many singles players can a country have in the draw???

Updated: January 8, 2008
Samantha Stosur's continued illness-related absence from WTA action left her doubles partner, Lisa Raymond, in the lurch on the eve of the Australian swing. Raymond and old friend Francesca Schiavone of Italy have agreed to play together in Sydney and Melbourne, and perhaps in Doha and Dubai.

Raymond, 34, said losing the top ranking she and Stosur had achieved pales in comparison to watching Stosur try to overcome one setback after another. "She's at such an intricate part of her career," Raymond said. "It's disappointing for me, but it's a hundred times more disappointing for her."

On another subject, Raymond said she's committed to playing Fed Cup this season, joining another longtime pal, Lindsay Davenport. Things get a little bit more complex when it comes to who is actually going to represent the United States in doubles.

Captain Zina Garrison is pursuing the services of both Venus and Serena Williams. Depending on their availability, Raymond's doubles rival and current No. 1, South African native Liezel Huber, who is married to an American and just became a U.S. citizen, also could be in the mix.

Raymond chose her words carefully, saying she'll play with any partner Garrison feels is best for the common cause. "The powers that be will have to sit down and think about who they want," Raymond said. "It's definitely an odd situation, given the fact that [Huber] just became an American citizen. If she plays, another girl is going to lose a spot. It'll be interesting to see how Zina handles it."

It's called "passing the buck."

Lindsay deserves the spot over Huber.

For the moment (health issues aside) we are looking at
Venus, Serena, Lindsay, Lisa Raymond and 2 others. I believe each country is allowed a total of 6 players including 2 doubles teams. Venus and Serena will be one of the teams for sure.

Liezel is current World number one. But Lisa already got excluded 4 years back from the Olympics if I recall well. So why not a Raymond-Huber team? The other ones are singles players, let's let them play singles!

I'll doubt if Venus and Serena will care to play doubles if it's too much time for the Olympics. I do, however, think Zina is concerned wayyyy more about Fed Cup than the Olympics. She's not going to make any PC choices, and I think she'll go with Venus and Serena in singles. She may pick LD and Raymond in singles. Methinks LD/Serena would make a better team, though.

Incorrect... she got passed on at the 2000 olympics for venus/serena (who also went on to win the GOLD) ... in 2004 she played with martina N and they lost in the quarters.... I feel lisa should get a spot if there are 2 teams... but when it came to the grand light lisa has seemingly always underachieved.

Raymond played 2004 olympics with navratilova and lost early.
Raymnd and huber would be a good team, but i rather have lisa and davenport since they played together already and have worked together.
gooo venus and serena

Lindsay has a longer history of playing for the US, and has committed herself to playing for the US when it wasn't convenient for her career. She has earned a doubles spot if she does not qualify for singles. That's just the way the cookie crumbles on these things. Huber is the new kid on the block and will probably, rightfully, be passed over. Maybe after a few years playing Fed Cup for the US, she will get an Olympic spot.

Better question. Has Huber committed to playing Fed Cup for the US this year? That would be the first step towards consideration IMO.

If Lindsay,Venus, Serena and Raymonds wants to play. They should be the priority regardless of any reason.
Huber, should just stand by and fill in in case needed, otherwise she does'nt deserve a spot.

It's definitely a tough decision. This arguably will be Lisa's last Olympics and it's really uncertain if Huber will play another 4 more years. I don't know why Huber changed nationalities but you have to think at least one reason was to play the Olympics.

The bottom line is who do you think is a stronger team Davenport/Raymond or Davenport/Huber. I think it's slightly odd that tennis doesn't use "Olympic Trials" format, it could prove to be useful in this situation and back in 2000.

For doubles there should be a week where the girls all come together and train/play matches and at the end of the week the doubles team is decided.

On a side note, it would be very interesting to see what would happen if the Williams sisters lost early in all their doubles tournaments.

I guess a more important question is if you agree that players should be allowed to "double dip" meaning playing both singles and doubles. If players can only enter one event that would allow 6 players to be on the team as opposed to as little as 4 players.

If Huber cared that much about playing in the Olympics, she should have stayed in her country for another year. Venus and Serena are a lock for a medal (barring injury), so it's not like USA will be desperate for teams. I say send Linds and Lisa. Plus they have a record of playing together. Has Huber played with anyone from USA before?

In terms of singles, I think it will be chosen from Venus, Serena and Lindsay, with their current form and injuries deciding the two singles players. In all honesty, I see Venus and Serena playing and Lindsay benched but called upon if needed (ala their cup tie vs Belgium a few years ago when Serena was injured and Lindsay was asked to play)

For doubles, I think it all boils down to how well Venus and Serena to at the Australian Open. If they win the title, then there is no question that they will be chosen over Raymond/partner, even if they arent ranked. If they dont win the doubles then tough call, who knows.

For doubles team:

Serena, Venus, and Lindsay are all Olympic gold medalists and all superb doubles players. They should be on the team as long as they want to play. So, the solution is simple: Serena and Venus will definitely be team #1. Team #2 should be whoever who can better pair with Lindsay. I say let Lindsay choose her partner.

Singles team:

Serena, Venus, and Lindsay, and the 4th wheel as whoever has the highest singles ranking at the time of the olympics.

I thought it was 4 singles player and 2 player for doubles it was changed a while back to be the same as the men and they play for ranking points which i don't agree with you should want to play the Olympics to represent your country and nothing else.

But I wouldn't be worrying about the olympic team just yet no one else apart from Lindsay has put their hand up to play singles for the US on the February fed cup tie yet and the team has to be named 10 days before the tie.

That was my original thought but she could have easily not accepted her US citizenship. Basically she could have just gotten married but remained a South African citizen but the fact that she declared and accepted her US citizenship shows that she is trying to show shes interested in playing for the US.

I think the Olympic Team will consist of 4 Players.

Venus Williams
Serena Williams
Lindsay Davenport
Lisa Raymond

With the sisters and Davenport playing singles and USA entering 2 doubles teams (Venus/Serena & Davenport/Raymond)

Leizel will be (and should be) cut out :D
