she'll be fine for quallies. jelena had to make a decision and she made it. whilst it's disappointing that it had to end this way given her hard work for this week, she's always maintained that melbourne was her aim for the summer so it was expected.

hopefully she can build on her form there.

she should have just stayed in this tournoment (she could have went far). she has to start out small.

she'll probably get a wc for the ao and lose in the first round. then she'll get all pissed and self indulgent....and give up. (just like she did in 06).

wow. your lack of perception amazes me. it has already been well established in 294940402 threads that jelena did not receive a wildcard into the ao maindraw and subsequently has to play qualifications. hence why she had to tank because she isn't allowed to withdraw from the tournament.

i hardly think you can call her self indulgent when she requested a wildcard into hobart qualifying after being offered a maindraw wildcard and stated she'd like to play the qualifying at the australian open. it might be worth actually trying to read a bit before spouting off such garbage.

I expected even so a win of Flavia, tanking or not tanking.

It's clear that Dokic can return at least in the Top 100, but I'm not sure she can win against players like Pennetta now.

jd4eva

tank.wta needs to suspend her asap

what the wta needs to do is negotiate with the itf to remove the rule which prevents players from withdrawing from another tournament in a slam week. the rule is peculiar and fails to take account of the needs of the majority of players.

correct. i think only the most rabid of jelena fans would have genuinely believed that she would have beaten pennetta. this is why i failed to understand the furore over the wildcard situation. yes, the situation is itself unfair but the arguments based on the possibility of dokic venturing deep in the hobart draw seemed to be nothing more than speculation.

pennetta is obviously a level or two above jelena at the moment and was always going to win. we must be pragmatic about jelena's comeback and realise that a few wins does not mean that she is by any means back in form. it's a work in progress and from her comments, no one is more cognisant of this than jelena herself.

i don't get your post?? all i'm saying is she lost in the first round in 06 and did not play a single event in that year (i could be wrong but she pretty much dissapeared)

everyone deals with set backs differently. jelena get's self indulgent. i don't want to see her do that this year.

This probably is a tank, though I'm hoping it isn't and she is just very very slightly injured and that it will miraculously heal in a day for her to be able to play qualifying. I just don't understand why she didn't play a complete match. Get a few games with a top 50 player, break a sweat, lose, and still make it to qualifying. That would have been less obvious.

i don't see what me being a fan has to do with anything. it also matters little whether you have faith in her nor whether she satisfies your standards. the fact of the matter is that jelena became despondent after her loss at the 06 ao. she admitted herself that she wasn't mentally ready to compete at that level.

you seem to have little concept of tennis players as human beings with real emotions and flaws. given the issues jelena has faced in her personal life, both documented and undocumented, it isn't that difficult to recognise why she reacted the way she did after the australian open 2006. was it disappointing? definitely. was it ideal? definitely not.

but that's neither here nor there. the fact of the matter is that you claimed that you believed she would now lose in the first round and it would be 2006 all over again. technically, that's an impossibility given that she has to play qualifying and even then, given the way jelena has handled herself since returning in october, it would be slightly presumptuous to assume that what happened in 2006 will necessarily be repeated. it's a possibility but she does not need to be crucified for it after this match given that we all know that she had a reason to tank.

Australian Jelena Dokic has pulled out of her second round match at the Hobart International with an ankle injury.

Dokic was trailing five games to love in the first set at the time and says she sprained her ankle in her final qualifying match on Sunday.

The game was handed to her opponent, Italian Flavia Pennetta.

There was speculation Dokic would withdraw from the Hobart tournament in a bid to qualify for the Australian Open.

It's possible before entering the court that she was serious about winning, but after a bad start she simply gave up knowing she can enter the AO qualification draw anyway.

If not... I don't think that's very wise to give up an opportunity to grab more WTA points at this tournament. Not to mention not very ethical or respectful for the tournament.

Australia’s Jelena Dokic has retired injured from her second round match with Italy’s Flavia Pennetta at the Moorilla Hobart International.

Down 0-5 in the first set, Dokic called for the trainer just 15 minutes into the match. Shortly after, she left the court with a sprained ankle.

After the match, Dokic revealed that she sprained her ankle on Sunday during her final qualifying match. Dokic played with the injury through her first round match against Germany’s Martina Muller, but during this evening’s match the injury claimed Jelena and her spot in the tournament.

“I had a good run here and I felt like I was playing well, but against someone like her [Pennetta] you need to be able move so much more,” said Dokic after her retirement.

Dokic admitted that the injury had worsened during her first main draw match on Monday and had caused her some discomfort during practice on Tuesday morning.

When questioned about the setback the injury presented, Dokic didn’t seem too worried. “It’s not something that’s really serious, so hopefully it will settle down. We’ll see what happens tomorrow.”

Jelena revealed that it’s “maybe doubtful” that she will take her place in the Australian Open qualifying event at Melbourne Park this week, to which she has been given a wildcard into. “I’ll have to make a really hard decision on Thursday morning,” she said.

Some of her qoutes in the news articles of late have had a "whiff" of entitlement by JD, IMO. Drawing parallels from 2006 seems like logical thinking to me. While i don't think Jelena will do exactly the same thing she did in 2006, I (and many others) are a little bit hesitant to beleive this comeback will be smooth sailing for Jelena. not a big deal. I'm sure Jelena wasn't committed to the match but it's not like she was going to beat Flavia anyway. She's won 4 matches in the last week and that will do her the world of good. I honestly believe now playing qualifying will work in her favour. Now she's get a day off and can play a few qualifying matches. If she doesn't get through she's still made more progress than people expected and if she does she will have a lot of confidence having won 7 matches in such a short time. If she got a maindraw wildcard she may have been in a situation where she got spanked by Flavia in Hobart one week and then drew Henin and got double bageled.

She was hitting only with her coach. I wasn't really looking at her shots, more her movement...which looked alright.

Jelena had to say that she was injured or something during her match against Pennetta. She couldn't just shake the umpire's hand saying that she has a plane to take. I'm not suprised to hear that she's moving well now but thanks for the repport ;):p.

You think? :p I was only telling for Dokic fans to not be worried. ;)

Apparently the crowd booed her in Hobart when she retired and she was crying...Flavia  her which was nice...

We should have cut the rope and let Tasmania drift over to New Zealand or down to Antarctica a long time ago...peguins would feel even colder then

Where did you hear that?

I feel like that would have been reported in the news stories if it was the case.

Well if Jelena really wasn't injured, she deserved the boos. I'm sad to hear she was in tears though.

I think she's gonna suck majorly at AO Qualies.

A lot of you predicted a tank. A lot of you thought that Jelena D had too much pride to tank. I guess we see where her head and heart are... Not judging her...she's no different than most of the players.

Jelena wants to be at AO. WTA tour wouldn't let her pull out of Hobart so Jelena had to do what she had to do. No shame in being selfish.

Wow, she was booed, thats a bit harsh?

Nobody knows whether she really did tank or not, except her. But obviously her heart was set on the AO and if she did I don't blame her considering TA stuffed up. Its all she could do really to play.

Im glad she won today :D

She said the injury was not a big deal, so it seems logical that she got over it in 2 days.

If it was no big deal, then it wasn't a sprain! Maybe she twisted it a little then, but sprains take more than 2 days to get over (I have weak ankles and have sprained my ankles many times, so I know). ;)
