Check out the new Gatorade commercial featuring Sharapova (and Jeter, Manning and Wade)

Not sure Pova is tennis's hero. Unless in 08 she goes on a rampage and beats Henin at the French lol.

BTW, how many commercials keep using O Fortuna???

How do you know Sharapova isn't a hero to anyone.

You have a small mind and a narrow perspective, a deadly combination.

Duh... hence they chose the tennis legend Maria Sharapova. What a career!

Why wouldnt an American advert (I assume its American) choose a home grown star who has represented their country, won a lot more slams and helped make America one of the big tennis superpowers?

and the reason why she's getting these endorsements after a pretty bad season is because of how she looks. FACT.

THe others are some of the most recognizable names in their respective sports as Maria is in tennis so I guess it gels that way.

Either way, that commercial is amazing. I just think O Fortuna is used WAAAAY to much.

FACT: She got the Gatorade endorsement before the 2007 season started

Wow, gotta say I really enjoyed that commercial. And I would probably have enjoyed it a lot as well if any other female player had been in it, but it was just extra special that Maria was in it.

Why don't tennis fans rejoice in the fact that there is a player who is getting their name thrown in with people like Manning, Jeter, and Wade?! These little things, showing a tennis player in a national ad, do nothing but help put tennis in the back of peoples minds. I don't know, but I'd rather have Sharapova in that commercial than Kuznetsova, even though Kuznetsova is a really nice girl and has a pretty cool personality, she just wouldn't fit in. I mean, Wade isn't the best basketball player around, and hasn't been having a great season, and the season before was terrible. But still, he fits in there because he's intense and good looking.

Dan beat me to the answer, but at the same time...everyone always says that Sharapova fails in comparison (lookswise) to other players, so if it's all looks, why do they keep choosing her?

People here get so upset about the stupidest things.

The ad is not saying that Maria is the only hero in tennis, it's the theme of the ad, and it just so happens that Maria endorses gatorade.
Why can't people just be happy any time tennis gets exposure in a national ad?

Jan 7th, 2008, 02:38 AM
i don't hide the fact that i'm far from a fan of Sharapova but her appearances in big ads is good for tennis overall. yes it would be nice if Justine or Serena/Venus were in these ads but it doesn't work that way. Players have different sponsors and some players are simply more marketable. it's not like Sharapova wrote the script anyway.

Serena had the HP ad last year. Nobody bitched about it.

It just happens that Gatorade sponsors Maria. Being ranked #5 in the world in your sport is enough to be called a hero if you ask me.

I hated how it was all still photos until the end. And are those photos of Maria from Wimbledon 2004? Surely they could have found more recent ones..? I suppose she was more photogenic back then.
EDIT: And why exactly are people upset that Sharapova's in this ad?

sharapova may not be your hero but may be a hero to some.....her story is inspirational, she didn't waste her beauty and talent ;)

Haters: get out of this thread if you are going to be nasty. Why do you have to come in here and stir things up. Fine you may not like her but there is no need to stir the pot and get fans angry.

Great ad by the way and glad to see brand Sharapova continues to grow and march on.

she is tennis's hero... she's a huge name all over the world, everyone knows who she is, she has fans in and out of the tennis world (fans of hers werent tennis fans before they saw her), she's been great for the game since she won wimbledon.. any attention on her goes to tennis, which is just beneficial for the sport itself...

Because marketers think tall + thin + blonde hair = a godsend.
If you stuff something in people's faces long enough they will believe it. Why do you think Britney sold so much, even though I have more talent in my left testicle? I mean...it IS pretty talented so Britney's up against some competition but youknowwhatimean!?
